Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes 18 February 2019

Cleckheaton Writers Group met last night with Alice, myself, Gemma, Cassie and Kathy in attendance, Pauline, Mandy and Sarah having passed on their apologies.

WIP updates: I have been editing three of my novels and have entered two competitions. Gemma has been editing and has written a blogpost. Cassie has written two stories for her U3A creative writing group, one of which she had brought to share. Kathy has been working on her Tobias WIP and has written a piece about her grandparents which she brought to share. Alice has finished her novel (well done Alice, brilliant achievement) and is now editing.

It was agreed that the members are happy to wait until Sarah is back in June for Mandy's short story workshop.

Alice has kindly offered to hold the write-ins at her house so that we do not have to pay for a venue. If any member is interested in these, to be held on Sundays, please get in touch with either Karen or Alice with available dates.

Feedback sessions: Gemma shared a 1k short story that she had put up as a blogpost, entitled 'You.' It was an intriguing piece that left the group with many questions and a discussion followed. There were a couple of editing suggestions, but it was well received by all. Cassie shared her 1k short story entitled 'Glittering Prize.' It was an excellent twist in the tale story which also left the group with questions and it was suggested that it should be submitted to a magazine or maybe Cassie could consider a collection of short stories for publication. Kathy shared her 400 word piece which she wasn't sure was flash fiction or a poem. The group felt that it was a touching evocative poem which would be great to submit to the Yaffle Prize (deadline end of February www.yafflepress.co.uk). Karen then shared the first chapter of a YA novel she started in 2007 (stalled at just over 14k words). She felt it was interesting how much her writing was telling rather than showing back then but the members felt that if it was written with the view to a narrator (like Death in The Book Thief) it could work as the information contained in the first chapter was needed. Karen liked this idea, maybe an emotion or War, and the group liked the premise of the story and felt that she should continue with it.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 4 March at 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome and meetings fortnightly thereafter.
