January Print Sales Struggled
Sales on print units were down 5.9% this January compared with the first month of
2018, due in no small part to the absence of a political bestseller in
combination with printing issues plaguing the industry. And in Amazon news,
Audible continues to ramp up its original content offerings and Audible Theater
category.
Children's book writer Jan Wahl died this past weekend at 87 following a storied career working with such artists as Maurice Sendak, Norman Rockewell, and Edward Gorey. Chinese science fiction author Xia Jia will finally see her short fiction translated into English thanks to Clarkesworld Magazine, which is launching a dedicated translation imprint. Meanwhile, in England, Nobel Prize for Literature laureate Kazuo Ishiguro was knighted by Prince Charles. It's the best news for the prize—which was last bequeathed, to Ishiguro, in 2017, before scandal upset its 2018 awards cycle—in quite some time.

Good Day for HC, Bad Day for Bezos
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has had a bumpy start to 2019,
has accused the owner of the National Enquirer of extortion and blackmail. Another of the most powerful men on
Earth, Donald Trump, has also had a rocky start to the year, in part thanks
to Melville House, which has crashed the climate report the president has tried to
downplay. Count former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson
among the beleaguered as well, admitting that she "fell short" in a new book plagued with
accusations of inaccuracies and plagiarism. And the book world bids a fond
farewell to Rosamunde Pilcher, author of The Shell Seekers, who died this week at 94.
In better news, HarperCollins has posted its second quarter results, which saw a huge jump in profits, thanks in no small part to sales of digital audiobooks. It's all the more proof that National Book Foundation executive director Lisa Lucas's claim that the book isn't dead is all too true.
HC Sales, Earning Up in Q2; News Corp CEO Takes
Swipe at Audible
Strong sales of digital audio were a key contributor to a 13% increase in profits at HarperCollins in the second quarter ended December 31, 2018. In discussing second quarter results, Robert Thomson, CEO of HC parent company News Corp, criticized Audible's domination of the downloadable audio market. more »

Ups and Downs at Lagardère
While Hachette Book Group reported a strong fourth quarter
today, its parent company, Lagardère, saw a 1.6% dip in book sales in its publishing group overall for
2018. Indigo Books & Music struggled in its third quarter, blaming a 1.7% drop in revenue,
in part, on a Canadian postal strike. And in the bookselling world, there's
been a lot of excitement this week, including news of new stores of all sorts and old friends helping each other out in times of turbulence.
Following accusations of inaccuracies in her new book, Merchants of Truth, former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson has now been accused of plagiarism. In a response on Twitter, Abramson has pledged to review the passages in question. Author Marlon James had a better start to the day, with news that his latest book, Black Leopard, Red Wolf, will be adapted by Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan.
