X-Men: Days of Future past film review

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) Poster

Went to see this movie with our good friends C and M last night and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Big fans of super hero movies and the X-Men franchise, we were eager to see how the mutants were going to triumph over the sentinels.

IMDB says: The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

High Jackman (Les Miserables, Australia) stars as Wolverine, the mutant who never seems to age, sent back by Professor X (Patrick Stewart, Star Trek, X-Men) and Magneto (Ian McKellan, The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit)  to try and alter the course of human and mutant history.

Charles Xavier (James McAvoy, The Last King of Scotland, Atonement) is a very different man back then, resorting to injections that negate his mutant ability in order to regain the use of his legs and broken by the loss of Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence, The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook) to Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender, Prometheus, Jonah Hex).  Wolverine has to use Beast (Nicholas Hoult, About a Boy, Jack the Giant Slayer) to help convince Professor X and Quicksilver (Evan Peters, Kick Ass, American Horror Story) to break Erik out of his high-security prison in order to stop Raven from making a catastrophic mistake.

Quicksilver is my favourite character of the movie, Wolverine aside for obvious reasons, and I love both his power and black humour and I am not alone, my son also loved this character.

There are many mutants in the movie and some appear that you probably weren't expecting, but I won't hint as that would be spoilers, but those that I can mention include Storm (Halle Berry, Monster's Ball, Cloud Atlas), Colossus (Daniel Cudmore, X-Men, The Twilight Saga), Blink (Bingbing Fan, Iron Man 3, Battle of the Warriors), Sunspot (Adan Canto, Mixology, The Following), Warpath (Booboo Stewart, The Twilight Saga, Space Warriors) and Iceman (Shawn Ashmore, The Following, X-Men) who fight against the all-powerful sentinels designed by Dr Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones, The Station Agent).

The film has taken £9.14M in total so far and it is not hard to see why.  The action keeps you on the edge of your seat and the drama is also character-driven.  Unlike most franchises, the cast of characters are vast and although some are not given nearly enough screen time, you genuinely care about the characters and the acting is superb.  Not just a blow them up action flick, but it does have this too in spades.

Don't forget to wait until the end credits for a little extra.                                               9/10
