Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) meeting 23 June 2014

CWG meeting took place last night where D, P, A and myself were in attendance, J, N, A and L having sent their apologies

The minutes from the last meeting were agreed and A informed members that he has been working on a new play whilst he was on his holidays, D has been working on the first draft of her new MG fiction and I have been working on SC and the O.U. course.

It was reiterated that the CWG requires members to inform the group, when sharing writing for feedback that may be of a sensitive nature, as a professional courtesy.

As N was not in attendance, we looked at As work only for the feedback session.  A shared a poem 'AWMMTM' written in the voice of a daughter remembering her mother.  We agreed that the repetition worked well and A admitted that he had worked on the piece after he sent it to the members to review (he brought printed copies along of the new version).

D informed the members that she has begun the sci-fi, fantasy and horror writers course at Leeds University and she promised to share the notes with her fellow CWG writers.

P recommended the current issue of Writing Magazine as it has an article about the pros and cons of self-publication and eight novel truths and Issue #153 of Writers Forum, as it has some interesting articles about setting up writing from home, but she agreed to share these articles via email.

D told members about a creative non-fiction session that she is running on the morning of the 4th of July in Mirfield (see The Wandering Wordsmith blog for further details) and we finished up the meeting with a writing challenge.  We were each given two characters, two traits, a conflict, a location and an object, and had to make a story using these elements.  I was given a gardener, a faith healer, ambition, scared, revenge, outer space and a scooter and I developed a very unique short story.  Both A and I shared our stories before we ran out of time for the session.

The next meeting is in a fortnight (6-8pm at Cleckheaton Library) and both slots for feedback are available.
