New collection of short stories from Gaza launches in the UK

The Book of Gaza, an anthology of short stories from Palestinian writers translated into English for the first time, will be published by Comma Press in June. Join English PEN in celebrating its launch at one of several events over the coming weeks, the first of which will take place at The Mosaic Rooms on Monday 2 June with editor Atef Abu Seif and author Abdallah Tayeh.

About the book

Under the Israeli occupation of the ’70s and ’80s, writers in Gaza had to go to considerable lengths to ever have a chance of seeing their work in print. Manuscripts were written out longhand, invariably under pseudonyms, and smuggled out of the Strip to Jerusalem, Cairo or Beirut, where they then had to be typed up. Consequently, fiction grew shorter, novels became novellas, and short stories flourished as the city’s form of choice. Indeed, to Palestinians elsewhere, Gaza became known as ‘the exporter of oranges and short stories’.

Bringing together the voices of Gazan pioneers of the form new and old, this anthology is a compilation of human stories that transcend global headlines; stories exploring what it means to be a Palestinian, and how that identity is continually being reforged; stories of ordinary characters struggling to live with dignity in what many have called ‘the largest prison in the world’.

Atef Abu Seif and Abdallah Tayeh will take part in a series of events in the UK:
