Comma Press newsletter, June events

Yesterday I got some good news, my submission for the Sampad Inspired by Museum competition was selected for publication in their anthology.  Lovely to find out I was successful in this competition and I eagerly await the publication of the book.  Once it is confirmed, I will post details of the book on my blog in case anyone fancies purchasing a copy :)

We're releasing two titles as part of our Reading the City series: The Book of Rio and The Book of Gaza (see below for more details), as well as bringing back the Manchester Independent Book Market (7-8 June). The Book of Gaza Hay launch

Editor of forthcoming collection The Book of Gaza Atef Abu Saif is visiting Hay Festival to celebrate the launch of our latest Reading the City title.

The collection brings together ten stories by Palestinian authors never before published in English, writing from the heart of the Gaza strip. Atef will be joined by contributing author Abdallah Tayeh, and will be discussing the book with Georgina Godwin. Find out more here.

Sara Maitland on Radio 3's The Verb

Sara Maitland, author of the 2013 science-infused Moss Witch and regular Comma contributor, is taking to the airwaves tonight to discuss short story writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Sara's essay on the work of Hawthorne is one of the fifteen featured in the recently released Morphologies, a collection of critical analyses by short fiction writers, about short fiction writers.

Sara will be joining Ian McMillan to discuss the essay on Radio 3's The Verb, 10pm tonight.

We're pleased to announce that the Manchester Indie Book Market is back. Now in its sixth year, the market plays host to some of the most innovative and exciting publishing happening in the UK. Bringing together presses from across the country, this year's market will showcase novels, short fiction, poetry, magazines, graphic novels and more.

As well as stalls, the market will feature back-to-back live readings from Manchester's finest poets and authors. The weekend is headlined by performance poet Jess Green, whose YouTube video 'Dear Mr Gove' recently went viral. Have a look at it here.

From Rio To River: a Short Tour of Latin America

This evening celebrates Latin American short fiction in preparation for the 2014 World Cup, set in one of Brazil's most thriving cultural landscapes. The night features guest speakers that include Peruvian author Diego Trelles Paz, editor of The Book of Rio Toni Marques and the editor of The Football Crónicas, Jethro Soutar.

Comma Film and Bokeh Yeah!'s evening of literary-film fusion

Come to Salford's Islington Mill on the 29th May for a night of poetry films, brought to you by DSLR usergroup Bokeh Yeah! and Comma Film.

The evening will feature a range of short films based on poems by Ed Barton (Bad Leg), Helen Clare (Mollusc), Gaia Holmes (Dr James Graham's Celestial Bed, Lifting the Piano With One Hand), Anna Percy and finally, Chris Woods (Dangerous Driving).
