WIN a summer day out at Castle Howard!
With thanks to Hannah of Get Lost Yorkshire:
HeyHere's a Yorkshire fact that completely caught me off guard... Did you know Leeds is home to the world's oldest continuously working railway? Not the oldest preserved railway. Not the oldest steam railway. The oldest railway anywhere in the world that's been running every single year since 1758. Somehow, I'd lived in Yorkshire for years without knowing this! Middleton Railway started life carrying coal into Leeds over 260 years ago. Today, it's run by an incredible team of volunteers who keep this fascinating piece of Yorkshire history alive for future generations. I expected to pop by for an hour or two. Instead, our visit turned into an unexpected full day out! There's a huge engine house packed with historic locomotives, a gentle steam train ride through the city outskirts, and the chance to hop off and explore the hidden gem that is Middleton Park before catching a later train back. I also discovered that Leeds was once a locomotive powerhouse, exporting engines all over the world. In fact, the entire railway system of Nepal was supplied by a Leeds company! It's one of those places that quietly sits on your doorstep while holding an incredible piece of world history. I've put together a complete guide covering: 👉 Read the full guide here and discover one of Yorkshire's most underrated attractions. If you visit, I'd love to know whether you're more excited by the steam trains, the history, or simply finding another brilliant Yorkshire hidden gem! Until our next adventure, P.S. My favourite surprise? I thought we'd spend a couple of hours there...but hopping off the train to explore Middleton Park completely changed the day. I've included all my tips for making the most of both in the full guide! 🌳🚂 Yorkshire Events What's on in Yorkshire this weekend? Here's a glimpse of what's on in Yorkshire this weekend 👀 West Yorkshire: The KWVR Diesel Gala runs from tomorrow through Sunday, bringing visiting Class 31s, 37s, 47s, a Class 50, and a Deltic 55 back to the Keighley & Worth Valley line for four days of heritage diesel running, brake van rides, and shed tours. Find out more. East Yorkshire: The Big Malarkey Festival is in full swing at East Park in Hull, with children's book events, author meet-ups, illustrator workshops, and performances turning the park into a tented village of family fun until this Sunday. Find out more. South Yorkshire: The Taste of Thailand Music and Food Festival brings Thai street food, live music, traditional dance, and Thai boxing demos to Sheffield's Norfolk Heritage Park this weekend. THU 10 - SAT 12 JUN 2027 NORTHERN BALLET - WUTHERING HEIGHTSOn the wild Yorkshire moors, love isn't tender. It's ravenous. Passionate and obsessive, Cathy and Heathcliff's love is a force of nature — beautiful, brutal and impossible to escape. Told through breathtaking dance and heart-wrenching storytelling, Emily Brontë’s gothic masterpiece tears itself from the pages and onto the stage in Northern Ballet's adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Choreographed by David Nixon CBE and set to original music by celebrated composer Claude-Michel Schönberg (West End and Broadway's Les Misérables and Miss Saigon), this dramatic ballet will sweep you into a haunting world of romance and revenge.
