Yorkshire Imperial Band

Known affectionately as ‘The Imps’, the Yorkshire Imperial Band marks its 90th year with a return to the Leeds Best of Brass series.

One of the oldest brass bands in the country, Hepworth Band was crowned 2026 Yorkshire Champion and is representing Yorkshire at the finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in October.

With a history spanning over 140 years, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band has built a reputation as a fine concert band through a combination of innovative programmes partnered with quality of performance.

The 2026 European Brass Band Champion, Flowers Band, brings a brilliantly brassy and highly entertaining evening to the Leeds Best of Brass series.

Black Dyke Band

The most recorded brass band in the world, Black Dyke Band created history at the Yorkshire Regional Championships in 2025, being the first band ever to win the championship for five consecutive years.

Grimethorpe Colliery Band

One of Britain's finest brass bands, Grimethorpe Colliery Band achieved its worldwide reputation from the hit film Brassed Off. In 2024, the band played alongside Coldplay as part of the British rock band’s headline set at Glastonbury Festival.

The highest ranked brass band from Leeds, Rothwell Temperance Band has remained a Championship Section band for over 25 years and has had a consistent presence among the top 20 brass bands in the world.

The world-class 'public subscription band', Brighouse & Rastrick Band, most known for its 1977 hit parade success The Floral Dance which reached No 2 in the UK charts, closes the Leeds Best of Brass series.

Rothwell Temperance Band and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus perform festive favourites and carols for all to sing in support of the Lord Mayor's Charity Appeal.

We warmly invite you to join us for the final workshops of Flying High: Creating Flags of Awe & Wonder, a very special flag-making project for our times, which visually and colourfully captures and celebrates all that is AWE-some and WONDER-full about our Holbeck & South Leeds communities!
 
We are part of something much bigger than ourselves. The aim of this project is to create a collection of handmade silk pennant flags which will represent and celebrate the human experience of awe, which is by far the least scientifically researched emotion, capturing images of the wonder-full and the awe-some which we find all around us every day, right on our doorsteps.

Over recent weeks and workshop sessions, we've been exploring all the ways we connect to awe and wonder: including by being outdoors in nature (a garden, a park, a local green space), connecting with other people (finding awe in the moral beauty, kindness and courage of others), in spirituality or our own religious practice, or through music. And these are just some examples!
 
The next stage of the creative process is to translate all the flag designs which workshop participants have come up with over the past month or so, on to large pieces of silk, using batik techniques, a process of waxing and painting. Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before: no experience necessary!

By creating a series of vibrant and colourful flags in celebration of everyday Awe & Wonder, together we will make a community resource to be presented, displayed and enjoyed at outdoor events for years to come. We'd love you to join us next week to be part of this creative process.
 
These FREE workshop sessions are open to adults from across South Leeds, refreshments will be provided, and please talk to us if childcare is a consideration for you.

A ‘Rhythm and Grooves’ Leeds based organ trio, Summer Saturdays – The Rhythm Section,  play their own take on tunes from Booker T & The MG’s, Kenny Burrell, Ramsey Lewis and Little Walter to The Doors on Saturday 20th June, 4-6pm.  Seven Courtyard or Bar. Pay What You Feel.

Also on Saturday 20th June, 7.30pm, Deep Within The Soul – Fredlin Morency. Singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and creative artist whose music lives at the intersection of soul, R&B, jazz, funk, and gospel, Fredlin brings a rich blend of heartfelt storytelling, powerful vocals, and expressive musicianship to every performance. Seven Venue. £10.

On Sunday 21st June, 1.30-4pm, composed of some of the finest of young Leeds musicians, JazzLeeds – Conrad Clenton Nonet plays Mingus. The nonet amplifies its members’ powerful voices by pushing the sonic boundaries of improvised music whilst rooted in the rich blues tradition. Seven Courtyard. Pay What You Feel.

Also, on Sunday 21st June, 7.30pm  round off the weekend at the Seven Quiz. Test your knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere – a great way to unwind with friends and family. Seven Bar. £5 per team. With prizes.

Over the course of the mourning period, their bond deepens into a tender and intimate relationship, creating a quiet exploration of grief, identity and queer love within a traditional rural community.

Summer Reading Challenge Launch

We can not WAIT to invite YOU along to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Manningham Library on Saturday 4 July, 12:00–2:30pm.
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national literacy programme that encourages children aged 4–11 to read for pleasure over the summer.
Each year, thousands of children across Bradford take part, building confidence, creativity and a love of reading. This year’s theme, “Read to the Beat”, celebrates the connection between music and stories.
We are delighted to host this year’s launch at Manningham Library, bringing together the local community, partners and civic leaders to celebrate reading and the vital role libraries play in supporting children and families.
The launch also coincides with South Asian Heritage Month, providing an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of our communities.
The afternoon will include:
  • Live music and children’s dance workshops
  • Fun, family-friendly activities and creative crafts for children
  • Light refreshments

Aged 14-19? Looking for something rewarding to do over the summer? Join us as a Young Ambassador and be part of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge in your local library!
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national programme that encourages children to keep reading during the holidays. This year’s theme, Read to the Beat, celebrates music, creativity and reading for fun.
As a Young Volunteer (ages 14–19), you’ll help bring the challenge to life by:
  • Welcoming families and promoting the challenge
  • Supporting fun, free family events and activities
  • Chatting to children about books and encouraging reading
  • Helping create a friendly, inclusive library space
You’ll gain valuable experience, build confidence and develop new skills – and your hours can even count towards awards like Duke of Edinburgh. 
It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, give something back to your community and be part of a lively summer in libraries.

High Vis Fortnight: Overdrive and Libby accessibility options

With an average of 2,300 readers borrowing over 9,500 titles every month, our eAudio and eBook collection via Overdrive and the Libby app is our very own digital branch library. The range of accessibility options help ensure the collection is as inclusive as possible for all our readers. For example …

  1. Screen reader support: Low vision and blind users can use screen readers to browse, borrow, read ebooks and listen to audiobooks in the Libby app.
  2. Adjustable text size: Users can manually adjust the text size for ebooks in the reader and expand the range of sizes to include larger accessibility sizes, if needed.
  3. Dark mode: The ebook reader uses the device’s lighting, but users can manually select a different lighting option in the Appearance menu: light, dark, or sepia.
  4. Adjustable playback speed for eAudiobooks: Libby’s audiobook player offers configurable playback speed for every audiobook. Users can choose from 48 different speeds, ranging from 0.6x to 3.0x.

National Year of Reading 2026 - Go All In!

Introducing the new Read On app

Libraries across England are coming together to expand the Read On app, bringing its "Couch to 5K for reading" approach to new regions as part of the National Year of Reading 2026.

Originally developed by librarians from London Libraries – the capital’s network within national charity Libraries Connected – Read On combines curated recommendations, reading challenges, quizzes and personalised plans to help people build reading into everyday life.

Designed for anyone who would like to read more, the app opens up a rich world of books, with expert guidance from library staff. It encourages users not only to read more, but to explore a wider range of authors, genres and styles.

An integrated map helps users find their nearest library, making it easy to discover books, attend events and connect with other readers.

Now, with support from LibraryOn grant funding delivered by the British Library, Read On is being rolled out across the North West, North East, East Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humber, alongside individual services including Essex and Lincolnshire.

The launch comes just ahead of the summer holidays, when reading often increases. The Read On team hope it will help turn a seasonal habit into a lasting one, supported by strong evidence that reading for pleasure enhances mental health by reducing stress and strengthening emotional wellbeing.

Read On is available now from Google Play or App Store

The project is funded through the LibraryOn grants programme, supported by Arts Council England and delivered by the British Library.

Read On was developed by Novellic, a London-based team experienced in crafting reader-facing mobile apps for publishers and book charities. Their self-titled flagship book club app also powers the book recommendations in the Read On app.

As France dropped climate from the G7 environment talks to suck up to one Mr Donald J Trump, London Climate Action Week kicks off tomorrow with a whole host of talks, activations and exhortions throughout the city. Part of the problem is that our connection to nature has become so eroded. I was shocked to find out that half of UK adults spend less than three hours a week in nature (including gardens and parks), and if we're ever to save our place on the planet, this relationship needs to be put front and centre. So if you're free on Sunday afternoon, come and find us at Sea Containers House, where I'll be talking to some very special guests about their role in helping us all flourish – because, of course, we are nature. And in the face of AI, nothing will matter more than this.

CELEBRATE: The Summer Solstice

We’ve been basking in good weather for a while already this year, but according to the astronomical calendar summer doesn’t officially begin until the summer solstice which falls this year on 21 June (Sunday). If you can’t get to Stonehenge for the UK’s biggest celebration, there are lots of ways to mark the day from home. For many people, the solstice has spiritual significance, representing new beginnings, enlightenment and creativity, hence why it’s an important day on the yoga calendar. Yogis mark the day by practising a yoga mala, which is 108 sun salutations in a row. But perhaps the simplest way to celebrate is by making the most of the light: rise early to catch the sunrise, or invite friends round for a late-night dinner in the garden as the sun sets.

 

MAKE: Nigella Lawson’s Summer Sgroppino

Love desserts? Love cocktails? What if there was a dish that blended the two? Enter the Sgroppino, an icy lemon pudding/cocktail hybrid which is perfect for the summer months. Refreshing, tasty and easy to whizz up, it’s a winner for summer dinner parties – and who better to guide you than one of the world’s most famous chefs, Nigella Lawson?

Makes 1 x 150ml glass, prep time: 3 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 100g Remeo Lemon Sorbet

  • 25ml chilled vodka (1 shot)

  • 25ml chilled prosecco (1 shot)

Method:

  1. Get a small 150ml coupe or martini glass and a small wide-ish jug. Scoop the lemon sorbet into the jug.

  2. Pour over the vodka, followed by the prosecco. Mix swiftly but gently with a couple of forks, pulling the sorbet apart and into the liquid rather than beating the ingredients together.

  3. When you have a lump-free cohesive mixture resembling a cloud of frosty froth, pour into the prepared glass.

  4. Raise to your lips and prepare to be transported!

TIP: Chill your glasses to keep your cocktail cold – put them in the freezer for at least 30 mins, or up to 2 hrs before serving. (Avoid freezing crystal and delicate glass.)

WATCH: House of the Dragon Season 3

Just two years on from series 2, House of the Dragon season 3 is set to return to our screens this Sunday. Based on the world of George R. R. Martin’s books, this season will continue to detail the pre Game of Thrones history set out in his companion history Fire & Blood, chronicling the events that lead to the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty. The show’s penultimate season, the action is set to kick off with the Battle of the Gullet – that huge war everyone started marching off to at the end of series 2. With new dragons and dragon riders now under her control, you might have guessed that Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is about to successfully storm and take King’s Landing. But when she attempts to seize and kill Aegon (as agreed to by Alicent in the finale), she will discover he has been smuggled out of King’s Landing by Larys Strong. Season 3 premieres on NOW TV and Sky on 21 June

Hey 

Here's a Yorkshire fact that completely caught me off guard...

Did you know Leeds is home to the world's oldest continuously working railway?

Not the oldest preserved railway.

Not the oldest steam railway.

The oldest railway anywhere in the world that's been running every single year since 1758.

Somehow, I'd lived in Yorkshire for years without knowing this!

​Middleton Railway started life carrying coal into Leeds over 260 years ago. Today, it's run by an incredible team of volunteers who keep this fascinating piece of Yorkshire history alive for future generations.

I expected to pop by for an hour or two.

Instead, our visit turned into an unexpected full day out!

​

There's a huge engine house packed with historic locomotives, a gentle steam train ride through the city outskirts, and the chance to hop off and explore the hidden gem that is Middleton Park before catching a later train back.

I also discovered that Leeds was once a locomotive powerhouse, exporting engines all over the world. In fact, the entire railway system of Nepal was supplied by a Leeds company!

It's one of those places that quietly sits on your doorstep while holding an incredible piece of world history.
