Going Out Special: A Marylebone Wedding – From ‘Yes’ To ‘I Do’

There’s something undeniably chic about tying the knot in London. Not only is the capital home to some of the world’s most dazzling venues, there’s a distinct romance to a London wedding – stepping out of a black cab and strolling through the city streets in your gown, backdropped by world-famous landmarks. The hotspot to know for upcoming nuptials? Portman Marylebone. With its Georgian townhouses, specialist shops and stylish venues, the characterful neighbourhood is fast becoming the city’s wedding capital. From the boutique stores of Chiltern Street to award-winning restaurants on Seymour Place and the historic Old Marylebone Town Hall, the area has you covered for the entire wedding journey – from the engagement to the big day itself.

The Bride

Jovonna London

So you’ve said yes and now you’re planning a little engagement party. Head to Portman Marylebone to find the perfect outfit: independent London-based label Jovonna London on George Street has a great spring/summer collection right now featuring lots of bridal outfits (the Sonia Skirt, £85, has honeymoon written all over it). Find the perfect accessories to complement your outfit at Anna + Nina on Chiltern Street (see our top statement bag pick below).

Next, head to Mouki Mou to begin your hunt for the perfect wedding day jewellery – the brand offers unique pieces from all over the world, like these pretty Ten Thousand Small Cross Pearl Earrings, £280. Stop by US-based label Sabah to find a chic pair of handcrafted leather shoes for your honeymoon. Finally, find your perfect wedding day scent at Nicolaï, which offers memorable scents for both women and men.

Ahead of the wedding day (or if you’re suspicious a proposal might be coming) get your manicure done at Show Me Your Nails, a premium, independent spot which emphasises healthy nail care (find bridal nail inspiration here).

The Groom

Grey Flannel

First thing’s first: find a suave outfit to pop the question in. Browse long-standing boutique Grey Flannel on Chiltern Street – which sells a range of merino shirts, drape chinos and more – and British brand Sunspel, known for its specially crafted fabrics. It’s also worth checking out TWC (The Workers Club), beloved for its time-proof pieces including Japanese denim, shirts and accessories (check out the brand’s new Made to Order service).

Later down the line, return to Portman Marylebone to find your dream wedding suit. Oliver Spencer is known for its wearable and responsibly produced menswear, including a range of premium suits – linen, two piece and double breasted (the Silman Navy Double Breasted Suit, £768, feels fitting for a city wedding).

Another great option is British heritage brand New & Lingwood. This store is an excellent choice for wedding suits, offering morning suits and black tie as well as more relaxed styles, plus an impressive selection of ties, from plain to the intricately patterned.

The Ceremony

Old Marylebone Town Hall Wedding Imagery © The Smiths & Co

Say ‘I Do’ at Old Marylebone Town Hall, a Grade II listed wedding venue which offers licensed ceremony rooms for marriages and civil partnerships. With its neoclassical architecture, impressive grand facade and Corinthian columns, the Marylebone Road building is a timeless spot to get your confetti snaps – ideal for couples looking for that historic feel. Inside is equally aesthetic: think walnut panelled walls and plaster ceilings alongside Scandi-inspired furnishings.

The Celebrations

The Italian Greyhound

If excellent food and wine are high on your priority list, choose French-inspired wine bar and restaurant Clarette for your post-ceremony party. The venue is set in a beautifully restored Tudor townhouse just a short walk from Old Marylebone Town Hall, with various spaces available for both intimate and larger weddings (the private dining room fits 18 seated guests, or you can book out the entire venue which fits up to 100 standing). The specially created wedding menu includes starters like seabass ceviche and truffle double baked souffle leeks followed by mains of beef wellington or lobster risotto, ending on a sweet note with pistachio crème brûlée.

Prefer Italian cuisine? Seymour Street’s The Italian Greyhound is another option for your wedding breakfast. Host an intimate affair in the light-filled, leafy Garden Room (up to 52 seated guests) or book out the whole restaurant, which can be decked out in majestic long feasting tables. Treat your guests to antipasti of burrata and datterini tomatoes followed by a pasta course, then mains including aubergine parmigiana, chicken milanese and yellowfin tuna, and desserts of homemade ice cream and Italian cheese.

Dear Reader,

As France dropped climate from the G7 environment talks to suck up to one Mr Donald J Trump, London Climate Action Week kicks off tomorrow with a whole host of talks, activations and exhortions throughout the city. Part of the problem is that our connection to nature has become so eroded. I was shocked to find out that half of UK adults spend less than three hours a week in nature (including gardens and parks), and if we're ever to save our place on the planet, this relationship needs to be put front and centre. So if you're free on Sunday afternoon, come and find us at Sea Containers House, where I'll be talking to some very special guests about their role in helping us all flourish – because, of course, we are nature. And in the face of AI, nothing will matter more than this.

CELEBRATE: The Summer Solstice

We’ve been basking in good weather for a while already this year, but according to the astronomical calendar summer doesn’t officially begin until the summer solstice which falls this year on 21 June (Sunday). If you can’t get to Stonehenge for the UK’s biggest celebration, there are lots of ways to mark the day from home. For many people, the solstice has spiritual significance, representing new beginnings, enlightenment and creativity, hence why it’s an important day on the yoga calendar. Yogis mark the day by practising a yoga mala, which is 108 sun salutations in a row. But perhaps the simplest way to celebrate is by making the most of the light: rise early to catch the sunrise, or invite friends round for a late-night dinner in the garden as the sun sets.

MAKE: Nigella Lawson’s Summer Sgroppino

Love desserts? Love cocktails? What if there was a dish that blended the two? Enter the Sgroppino, an icy lemon pudding/cocktail hybrid which is perfect for the summer months. Refreshing, tasty and easy to whizz up, it’s a winner for summer dinner parties – and who better to guide you than one of the world’s most famous chefs, Nigella Lawson?

Makes 1 x 150ml glass, prep time: 3 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 100g Remeo Lemon Sorbet

  • 25ml chilled vodka (1 shot)

  • 25ml chilled prosecco (1 shot)

Method:

  1. Get a small 150ml coupe or martini glass and a small wide-ish jug. Scoop the lemon sorbet into the jug.

  2. Pour over the vodka, followed by the prosecco. Mix swiftly but gently with a couple of forks, pulling the sorbet apart and into the liquid rather than beating the ingredients together.

  3. When you have a lump-free cohesive mixture resembling a cloud of frosty froth, pour into the prepared glass.

  4. Raise to your lips and prepare to be transported!

TIP: Chill your glasses to keep your cocktail cold – put them in the freezer for at least 30 mins, or up to 2 hrs before serving. (Avoid freezing crystal and delicate glass.)

This recipe was created by Nigella for Ocado.

WATCH: House of the Dragon Season 3

Just two years on from series 2, House of the Dragon season 3 is set to return to our screens this Sunday. Based on the world of George R. R. Martin’s books, this season will continue to detail the pre Game of Thrones history set out in his companion history Fire & Blood, chronicling the events that lead to the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty. The show’s penultimate season, the action is set to kick off with the Battle of the Gullet – that huge war everyone started marching off to at the end of series 2. With new dragons and dragon riders now under her control, you might have guessed that Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is about to successfully storm and take King’s Landing. But when she attempts to seize and kill Aegon (as agreed to by Alicent in the finale), she will discover he has been smuggled out of King’s Landing by Larys Strong. Season 3 premieres on NOW TV and Sky on 21 June

BOOK: The International Supreme Sheepdog Trials At Daylesford

We might be in the thick of summer, but we’re already looking ahead to some post-holiday action. First up on the calendar? A trip to the Cotswolds. Daylesford’s working farm is set to host the International Supreme Sheepdog Trials this September, one of the world’s most respected rural events. Beyond the trials, there’s even more to see; the itinerary takes in a private tour of Highgrove Gardens with afternoon tea, a Market Garden walk, wine tasting and meals across the estate's Michelin-starred restaurant and The Wild Rabbit in Kingham. Watch Harlan Coben’s New Thriller

Everyone’s favourite thriller writer is back. Known for his twisty plotlines and jaw-dropping reveals, author Harlan Coben has spent the last few years working with Netflix to bring a whopping 14 of his nail-biting novels to the screen. The latest, I Will Find You, drops today – and is the first of Coben’s adaptations to be set in the United States. It also opens with a slight twist: the crime happens years before the series opens. We centre on David Burroughs (Sam Worthington), an incarcerated father serving a life sentence for the muder of his own three-year-old son, Matthew (Ashton Cressman), half a decade ago. While his wife grieves and rebuilds her life on the outside, inside prison walls David swears his innocence to no avail – that is until he receives information that his son may be alive. Watch England's World Cup Opener

Is it coming home? The journey to find out starts here. England kick off their 2026 World Cup campaign tonight against Croatia – a rematch that carries a bit of baggage after Croatia knocked England out at the semi-final stage in 2018, only for Gareth Southgate's side to overcome Croatia 1–0 win at their opening game at Euro 2020. Now under Thomas Tuchel, England head to Arlington, Dallas in the US with a squad built around Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, and hopes of going further than the two finals that got away. Group L also includes Ghana and Panama, making this the most winnable group England could have asked for – but Croatia will kick things off with their toughest test. Kick-off 9pm, watch on itv.com

Up Your Summer Salad Game

When it comes to summer salads you’ll actually want to eat, London favourite Farmer J is the name to know. Here, the cafe has shared one of its top recipes – perfect for meal prepping or a fresh WFH lunch dish.

Cavolo Nero, Butter Beans, Kalamata + Oregano Salad

Ingredients

Serves 2 as a main or 4 as a side

  • 50g cavolo nero, torn or roughly shredded

  • 200g tinned butter beans or kidney beans, rinsed and drained (or use any good-quality bean)

  • 50g kalamata olives, pitted and halved

  • 150g cherry tomatoes, halved

  • 20g sun-dried tomatoes, roughly chopped

  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced

  • 50g fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped

  • 50g fresh coriander, chopped

  • 10g fresh oregano, chopped

For the oregano dressing

  • 70ml extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp sherry vinegar

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 garlic clove, grated

  • 1 tbsp dried oregano

  • 1 tsp sea salt

  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Method

  1. First make the dressing. Whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, sherry vinegar, mustard, garlic, dried oregano, salt and pepper until emulsified and full of zing.

  2. If you’re using tough cavolo, give it a 2-minute blanch in boiling water, then refresh in iced water and pat dry. Otherwise, keep it raw and rugged. Throw the cavolo nero into a large bowl and pour in a tablespoon of the dressing. Massage thoroughly with your hands to soften it up.

  3. Add all the remaining salad ingredients to the bowl, then pour over the dressing. Toss gently; don’t smash the beans. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed, and serve it up.

Grow Your Own Food

Whether it’s rising food prices, a Covid hangover, or just an increasing desire to connect with the earth, the urge to grow our own food has never been stronger. According to Google data, UK interest in ‘how to grow tomatoes’ has officially equalled ‘how to grow grass’ for the first time on record. Vegetable gardening searches have surged by 100 per cent year on year, and seven of the top ten trending ‘how to grow’ searches are now for edible plants. But how to get started? Urban gardener Martha Swales – who tends a five-by-eight-metre plot attached to a council flat in London – recommends easing in with courgettes, cherry tomatoes, or potatoes. ‘They produce repeatedly, and potatoes are pretty quick… Tomatoes are a gateway to grow your own food,’ she says. Garlic greens are something else Martha suggests to new growers. ‘You need a bulb of supermarket garlic, a bowl of water, and two weeks’. The greens grow to about 20 centimetres and can be snipped over garlic bread, stirred into a salad, or made into garlic mayo. Find Martha’s full guide to growing your own food here.

Wicked announce plans for 20th Anniversary Celebrations

WICKED ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Emma Kingston and Zizi Strallen will lead the 20th Anniversary cast in a weekend-long celebration at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, with three spellbinding performances to choose from!

Tickets go on sale TOMORROW, Monday, 22 June at 12pm.

THE CHEAPEST THEATRE TICKETS IN LONDON

The cheapest tickets you can buy online (through official ticket websites) for theatre shows playing now and coming up include mostly plays (which is understandable given musicals have higher running costs because of the number of additional musicians the show needs) but there are a few musicals in there.

The West End transfer of Into The Woods, the revival of Miss Saigon, Lionel Bart’s iconic Oliver! and Roald Dahl’s Matilda can all be seen for £15-£20.

These will likely not be the best seats in the house but if you are looking to see something in London’s glittering West End and can’t stretch to some of the crazy ticket prices out there, these can be a good option.

This weekend sees the return of West End Live - the free theatre festival held in London's Trafalgar Square, where the majority of theatre shows perform. It is a chance for people to get a taste of what they might want to go and see before they book tickets.

My highlights from day one include Avenue Q, Paddington, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, The Book of Mormon, Grease The Immersive Movie Musical and Shannay Holmes.

You can watch all the performances from West End Live (including everything that happens today) on the Official London Theatre YouTube channel by clicking the button below.

Other news this week

Jesus Christ Superstar, which starts performances this weekend at the London Palladium have released £25 standing tickets for all performances. Get them quick!

The incredible play 1536, playing at the Ambassadors Theatre until 1 August is now completely sold out. The show transferred from the Almeida earlier this year. It can't extend booking in its current home (as Paranormal Activity is returning in August) but I hope to see the show continue elsewhere. Did you see it?

The Shaftesbury Theatre, the largest independent theatre in the West End, have announced the theatre will be renamed the Judi Dench Theatre in honour of Dame Judi Dench.

The renaming, set to take place in February 2027, celebrates Dame Judi’s unparalleled contribution to British theatre and the performing arts, marking a historic moment for one of the West End’s most iconic stages.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie has announced that Ashcon Rahmani and Rebecca Trehearn will be playing the much-loved roles of Jamie and Margaret New for the 10th Anniversary tour commencing in January 2027.

The world premiere of SAVAGE, a brand-new comedy and drag extravaganza, about the Blonde Bombsite herself, Lily Savage, set to tour the UK.

Finally, full casting has been announced for Thelma and Louise the Musical, coming to the Young Vic later this year. Find out more.

The iconic British play returns for

SIX WEEKS ONLY!

Mike Leigh’s ferocious black comedy of suburban life, social class, materialism and sexual tension in 1970s England returns to London's West End for a strictly limited season. Directed by Nadia Fall and starring star of stage and screen Tamzin Outhwaite and comedian, actor and writer Kevin Bishop.

Essex, 1977. Beverly is hosting, the alcohol is flowing, Demis Roussos is on the record player and the cheese and pineapple cocktail sticks are ready to go. Queen of the castle in her suburban semi, Beverly and husband Laurence welcome new neighbours Angela and Tony round for drinks. Sue from next door is invited too but the real party is happening back at her place, as Sue’s teenage daughter Abigail can’t seem to keep the racket down. Awkward small talk quickly descends into inappropriate flirtation and marital disputes: a soiree from hell, but it’d be rude to leave…

HOW TO MAKE A MESS

A Totally Unauthorised Love Letter to Nigella Lawson

A mouthwatering new musical by Emily Rose Simons

★★★★★ "Delightfully ridiculous and deeply emotional" (JackStage)

When Anna’s estranged mother dies, she skips sitting shiva and immerses herself in Nigella Lawson’s seminal cookbook How To Eat, somehow summoning an imagined Nigella as her guide. Folding together heartache and humour, Anna rediscovers the joys of living, learning, and - most importantly - eating, one recipe at a time.

Directed by Grace Taylor, HOW TO MAKE A MESS is a delicious celebration of feeding yourself in every sense, through the exploration of recipes and the stories they hold. With a score that blends classic Broadway warmth with quirky, contemporary storytelling, this freshly-baked new musical serves up a bittersweet helping of grief, joy, and the question of what we leave behind.

Running at Upstairs at the Gatehouse until Sunday 28th June!
