Happy Earth Week

Hi KAREN,

To celebrate Earth Week, we're shining a spotlight on how we use our renowned natural science collection to engage the people of Leeds with plants, animals, and sustainability.

Read on to find out more, along with nature-themed events and plant-based things to see across our venues.

Our Natural Science collection

a curator showing visitors display frames of exotic butterflies, with a pair of antlers from a taxidermy deer head in the foreground

Our collection comprises around 750,000 specimens and is designated as being of national and international importance. It demonstrates the astonishing beauty and diversity of the planet we call home, including rocks, fossils, minerals, meteorites, gemstones, taxidermy animals, insects, shells, molluscs, plant specimens and seeds.

We have skeleton and taxidermy examples of extinct species such as the Dodo, Tasmanian Wolf, Great Auk and Moa, as well as endangered species like the Snow Leopard and Giant Panda. Our specimens are used by researchers investigating the history of Earth's biodiversity and climate, and what this can tell us about climate change and the future of conservation.

You can see our Natural Science collection on display in the Life On Earth gallery at Leeds City Museum, or by booking a tour of the Collection Store at Leeds Discovery Centre.

Herbarium sheets from the collection

Leeds botanist John Grimshaw Wilkinson (1856-1937) gave many herbarium sheets to our collection featuring rare and extinct plants. After losing his eyesight at the age of 22 he learned to identify plants using touch, smell, and even taste. Find out more in this blog by volunteer Callum Rushworth.

Fantasy meets punk with a Teesside twist.
A joyfully chaotic celebration of youth expression and identity.

Join celestial beings Sid and Viv as they keep a watchful eye on the streets of Middlesbrough. Their office might be in a dingy basement, but the streets they look in on are far from drab and gloomy.
There are fascinating human beings out there, some are not like the others, they’ve formed their own groups, their own cultures, their own small societies.
What will Viv and Sid discover about these sub-cultures from looking in on them?
And more importantly what will they discover about themselves?

Following sell out performances in 2024, ARC Stockton Associate Artist Audrey Cook is bringing back Bus Stop Goths for exclusive performances in Teesside before going on a national tour.
With homes feeling uninhabitable, and youth services thinning, Bus Stop Goths is a surreal modern folktale which centres around alt youth and their sacred outdoor spaces in which they reside.

Staying In

Emulate The Boston Apartment In The Drama

Courtesy of A24

Have you managed to catch The Drama at the cinema yet? Starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya as a soon-to-be wed couple, the film witnesses the shiny veneer of their relationship crumble following a dinner party gone awry. But beyond the, ahem, drama unfolding onscreen, it’s the chic Boston brownstone apartment – filled with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, art-covered walls and a sleek spiral staircase – at the centre of the film that has us hooked. ‘Thanks to the expert vision of production designer Zosia Mackenzie, the apartment feels much more than just a backdrop. It serves as an extension of the couple’s relationship – modern and polished on the surface, yet rich with subtle layers that hint at something brewing beneath the surface,’ agrees Sarah Ross, co-founder of Addison Ross. ‘The design mirrors their dynamic: elegant, yet full of depth, and perfectly suited to the drama unfolding within.’ To recreate it at home, Sarah’s top tips include sticking to a neutral palette, balancing clean lines with comfort and choosing art that resonates with your style; find the full guide here.

Going Out

Check Out The New Jolene Bakery

Stoke Newington bakery Jolene has become one of London’s hottest celebrity hangouts in recent years, attracting everyone from Harry Styles to Paul Mescal and Keira Knightley. And now, the brand is expanding with a new branch, opening today in the flagship store of London-founded fashion store Aries in Soho. Pop in to try one of the signature pastries made with Wildfarmed regenerative flours, such as rhubarb, frangipane and almond Danishes; flaky pains aux raisins; and jalapeno and cream cheese buns. Or visit for lunch, choosing from a daily line-up of sandwiches filled with the likes of bacon and leek with garlicky aioli and rocket; or braised fennel with creamy goats cheese and pickled onions. Sweet treats will also be available throughout the day – think glazed ring doughnuts and St Clements poppyseed drizzle loaf. Look out for special Jolene x Aries collab pieces in the shop too, like T-shirts, mugs and caps. 13 Bridle Lane, W1F 9BT, jolenebakery.com

Property Of The Day

From the 1,000 year-old refectory to a 10-seat hot tub, this former monastery is the ultimate mix of old and new. Once home to a conspirator who held on-site meetings to organise the de-throning of King James II, the property was later visited by Queen Mary (wife to George V).

Little Luxury

Dr. David Jack’s Korean Glass Skin Facial is a cult favourite for a reason. Ellie Smith headed to the Liberty clinic to give it a try, and can confirm it gives you an instant glow that lasts for weeks. ‘The treatment begins with a deep cleanse, followed by a micropeel (a tad stingy but suitable for even the most sensitive of skin), pore cleansing with a special tool and a bubbling oxygen mask. But my favourite part was the deeply relaxing Golki lymphatic drainage massage which left my skin feeling lifted and snatched. After 15 minutes under the red light mask, my therapist slathered my skin in serum and moisturiser to maximise that glass-like effect; I returned to the streets of Oxford Circus feeling like a new woman.’ Find more of London’s best facials here£195, drdavidjack.com

Competition Time

Fancy a trip to the races with a live performance from Ronan Keating? You’re in luck: we’ve teamed up with Newbury Racecourse to offer one lucky winner two Premier Enclosure admission tickets, a three-course dining experience at The Hennessy Restaurant, drinks, afternoon tea and more. Enter here.

Psssst…

Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo, actor James Norton and Gordon Ramsay’s aspiring chef daughter Tilly Ramsay are just a few of the many celebrities preparing to attempt the London Marathon on Sunday. But will they beat this bunch of speedy stars?

Whatever You Do, Don’t

Mistake a naturist festival with a naturalist one. Cumbria Nature Festival (think conservation talks and guided walks) has been forced to stress that ‘clothes are recommended’ for attendees following a mix-up that led the family event to be mistaken for a nudist gathering. Oops!

Your school is invited to watch 60 dancers move as one in the UK debut performance of COLOSSUS at a heavily reduced rate for you and your students.

This hypnotic performance explores relationships between the individual and the collective, with a single movement triggering a chain reaction leading the dancers from chaos to order.

This event is suitable for KS3, KS4 and KS5 students, and is Speech-free.

Tickets are £5 per student and teachers go free.

 Book by emailing schools@southbankcentre.co.uk

Get a taste of what's on offer

Listen to a playlist created for Multitudes by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, one of our Resident Orchestras, and pupils at Acland Burghley School in Camden.

The orchestra has been based at the school as a ‘creative resident’, leading programmes to connect the school’s pupils and young people across Camden to classical music.

    Introducing Meet the Makers

Some things only get better with time, the craft behind them, the processes, the people. And those are the stories worth telling.

Meet the Makers is a series of intimate gatherings where the craft of our hotels and chefs is paired with that of like-minded British brands, each with its own heritage, perspective and evolution. Together, they bring Now & Then to life: a celebration of Britain’s past, present and what comes next.

Each experience places you at the heart of it all, where a chef’s creativity meets a maker’s craftsmanship. From the kitchen to the studio, you’ll see how ideas are shaped, how traditions are reimagined, and how flavour, design and skill come together in a way that feels both rooted and refreshingly current.

An afternoon with Tom Brown & Wild Idol

PoB Hotels invites you to an exclusive Meet the Makers experience with Michelin-starred chef Tom Brown at The Capital, in partnership with Wild Idol.

    21 May 2025,

    12.30pm

    The Capital Hotel,

    Knightsbridge

A Taste of the What's Included

Three courses from acclaimed Chef Tom Brown, each one a quiet study in seasonal British ingredients. He and the team will walk you through every one.

Wild Idol is alcohol-free sparkling wine done properly — crafted by expert winemakers who refused to compromise on taste. CEO Paul Beavis tells the story behind it, glass in hand. Paired throughout. Curious questions encouraged.

With a little something to take home and overnight stays available at exclusive rates, you can wake up in Knightsbridge with no rush required.

    Coming Soon...

More makers. More stories of craft, time, and what endures.

    8th September 2026

    at Gravetye Manor

Handcrafted in Britain since 1934. Ettinger make leather goods built for a lifetime, and they'll tell you exactly how.

    24th September 2026

    at Northcote

Three centuries of craft, one hat at a time. Lock & Co. topping heads, and turning them, since 1676.

    Sarah McQuaid
    Fri 1 May, 7.30pm
Sarah McQuaid’s lush, velvety voice combines with her engaging personality and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience.

Her live performances are full of warmth, wit, and intimacy, and have earned her loyal followings on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the words of one audience member: “Sarah is a truly impressive artist who takes you on a journey through storytelling, blending a variety of musical genres and instruments with ease and creativity. Her lyrics are down-to-earth yet incredibly captivating. Attending her concert feels like diving into a book of short stories — some resonate deeply, some spark your imagination, others make you pause and reflect, and a few bring tears or spontaneous laughter. Sarah’s connection with the audience is both gentle and profound. You don’t  just watch a performance — you become part of it, part of the story she’s telling. … To anyone considering seeing her live: go. It’s worth every second. You’ll leave with your heart full and your soul touched — guaranteed.”

“Brilliant musicianship, a warm and welcoming stage presence and a voice as rich, matured and knowing as the finest thrice-distilled Irish malt whiskey.” —fRoots

“Captivating, unorthodox songwriting … layered satin vocals ... enthralling, harrowing arrangements … a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”  —PopMatters

“Her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever.” —Huffington Post

    Weekly Escape

    Hey

This is your sign to get outside… 🌿

The sunshine is finally starting to show up again and if you’re anything like me, that instantly puts you in the mood for a good walk.

Not a huge hike or a full-day trek (not yet anyway!) Just somewhere easy, peaceful, and genuinely beautiful.

And every time I feel like that, I always come back to one place: Rivelin Valley Trail near Sheffield.

It’s one of those walks that just ticks every box.

A gentle riverside path. Woodland that feels miles away from the city. Stepping stones, waterfalls, and quiet pools along the way.

It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, switch off, and just enjoy being outside again.

But what makes it even more special?

You’re not just walking through nature - you’re walking through 400 years of history.

Along the trail, you’ll pass the remains of over 20 old watermills that once powered Sheffield’s cutlery industry. There are little plaques dotted along the route that bring the whole place to life in a way you wouldn’t expect from a simple woodland walk.

It’s one of those walks that feels different every time you visit.

    Whether you:

    • Fancy a relaxed weekend stroll
    • Need a dog-friendly walk with space to roam
    • Or just want somewhere easy that still feels like an escape

    This one never disappoints.

I’ve put together a full guide with everything you need to plan your visit - including parking spots, route details, and the best things to look out for along the way 👇

👉 Read the full guide here

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get back out walking… this is it ☀️

    Until our next adventure,

PS: This is one of those walks that gets very popular when the weather’s good - it’s worth planning ahead so you can enjoy it at its best.
