Dear Reader,

Over the Easter weekend, I had a lot of catering to do. Family and friends basking in glorious sunshine in the New Forest. There was roast lamb for the main event (my favourite thing to cook, Middle Eastern style together with lots of feta, olive and tomato based salads). I topped it off with pavlova for pudding. Once the guests had gone, it was just a few family members for supper, so a quick spaghetti carbonara seemed an easy win – and what's a bowlful of carbs between family? Nine happy punters – or so I thought. The next day, when everyone had returned home, I received an email from one of them with some pointers about how to improve my pasta offering – how long I should have cooked it, what type of pasta would have been better and that way more parmesan and herbs should have been used. I deleted it. I'm sure it came from a place of kindness ('how to improve Lucy's cooking skills'), but, honestly... when you've toiled over the stove for two days, that's the last thing you want to hear, so I've saved my rant for you.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Grow dahlias at home

Spring has finally sprung here in the UK – and we couldn’t be more thrilled. It’s time to sow some seeds and revive your winter-worn garden. Our bloom of choice? Dahlias. ‘Flowering from mid-summer to early winter, few other flowers can rival dahlias for sheer flower power,’ says Rosebie Morton, founder of The Real Flower Company. ‘They come in a huge range of colours, from the palest muted tones to bright electric pinks and purples, and in many different shapes, including pompom, ball, cactus, waterlily, anemone or even dinnerplate.’ You’ll find dahlias in local garden centres at this time of year, typically in a state of pre-bloom. (‘Don’t be put off by the brown mass of roots, known as tubers, with the dead stems at the top,’ emphasises Rosebie. ‘This unprepossessing lump will quickly burst into life.’) See here for more of her top gardening tips.

Read Into the Wreck by Susannah Dickey

The third novel from Derry-born Tennis Lessons author, Susannah Dickey, Into The Wreck poses the question: how do you mourn someone you never really knew? Centred around the death of the family’s gentle but distant patriarch, this novel is told from five perspectives: that of his children Anna, Gemma and Matthew, his wife Yvonne, and her sister Amy. Reunited with their mother for the first time in a long time, the siblings must balance their everyday concerns against the looming spectre of their father’s recent death. Newly sex-obsessed Gemma needs to work out what she wants from life; Anna has to solve the issue of her not-quite-exclusive boyfriend, and aunt Amy is forced to confront her past – all while Yvonne attempts to pull off the perfect, post-funeral family dinner. Worrying at the knotty complexities of their fraying bonds, this book promises an insightful exploration of family dynamics punctuated with Dickey’s trademark wit and empathy. Out now

Recipe of the Week…

Potato Pancakes with Lingonberries and Soured Cream

Niklas Ekstedt is the esteemed Swedish chef behind the eponymous Ekstedt, which has branches both in Stockholm and in London’s Great Scotland Yard Hotel. His latest recipe book, The Swedish Cookbook, is a celebration of Nordic cuisine and the concept of lagom (the Swedish ethos of ‘just the right amount’ or ‘balance’). This week we’re sharing one of the recipes with you: potato pancakes with lingonberries and soured cream.

‘Potato dishes are a staple in many countries, each with their twist or preferred methods of cooking,’ writes Ekstedt. ‘In Sweden, the beloved potato pancake, known as raggmunk, stands out as a favourite among young and old alike. Deeply rooted in Swedish culinary tradition, this simple and flavourful recipe is nostalgia in a potato dish: so many Swedes remember enjoying it as children, especially in school cafeterias.’

Ingredients

  • 700g potatoes, peeled

  • 1 small egg

  • 1 tablespoons plain flour

  • A pinch of salt butter or oil, for frying

Method

  1. Coarsely grate the potatoes and place them in a sieve. Press down firmly with a clean tea towel to squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

  2. Tip the potatoes in to a clean, dry mixing bowl and add the egg, flour and salt. Stir to combine.

  3. Heat the butter or oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. When hot, take one quarter of the mixture and add it to the pan, pressing it down with the back of a spatula into a thin pancake shape. Fry the potato pancake for 2–3 minutes, until the underside is golden and crisp, then flip it over and fry for another 2–3 minutes, until cooked through. Repeat for the remaining mixture, until you have 4 pancakes altogether.

  4. Serve immediately with soured cream and lingonberries on top.

TIP: Your favourite roe, chopped chives and finely chopped red onion make a great, savoury alternative to top these potato pancakes.

Britain’s longest-reigning monarch was always something of a trendsetter – in every decade of her life – and now, we can see just how big her sartorial impact was on the nation. Buckingham Palace has just opened the doors to its biggest exhibition of the year: Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style. The largest ever exhibition dedicated to the monarch’s enduring wardrobe, visitors can expect to see clothing, shoes, jewellery, hats and bags from throughout her lifetime. ‘Queen Elizabeth II’s lifetime spanned just four years short of a century – a century that witnessed really seismic changes in the British fashion landscape,’ says curator Caroline de Guitaut. ‘The Queen found her own style, creating a look that became instantly recognisable to a global audience.’ And with highlights spanning her wedding gown, off-duty tweeds and wellies, army uniforms and her coronation dress, we’re guaranteed to see the Queen like we never have before. On now until 18 October 2026, tickets available at rct.uk

Watch Big Mistakes

If you loved Schitt’s Creek, we come bearing good news: Dan Levy’s new comedy/crime drama is now streaming on Netflix – all eight episodes of it. And similarly to Schitt’s CreekBig Mistakes centres on two deeply incapable siblings, though this time they don’t fall from a life of luxury. Instead, queer priest Nicky (Levy) and his sister Morgan (Taylor Ortega) journey on a hilariously chaotic ride as they are blackmailed into the world of organised crime following a spot of ill-advised petty theft on the behalf of their ailing grandmother. As Nicky preaches in the trailer, ‘Fear has this ability to coerce us into doing things we never envisioned ourselves doing.’ Think odd jobs for shady characters. They’re joined by their blissfully unaware mother Linda (Laurie Metcalf) as they're unwittingly pulled deeper into the underworld. Watch now on Netflix.

Watch The Testaments

The Handmaid’s Tale may have wrapped up with its sixth and final season last spring, but our time in Gilead is far from over. In the works as early as 2023, today the first three episodes of sequel series The Testaments have dropped on Disney+, with new episodes to follow weekly. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 Booker Prize winning novel of the same name, the action opens about 15 years after the events of her agenda-setting 1985 dystopia The Handmaid’s Tale – or about 10 years after the expanded events of the TV series. Bringing Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) back to the fore, this time we centre on teens Agnes (Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday) as they navigate the halls of Gilead’s preparatory school for future wives. Dutiful and pious Agnes is top of the heap, while Daisy is a new arrival and convert from Canada – but both are set to uncover secrets that flip their worlds upside down… Streaming now on Disney+.

See Inside Parnham Estate

Originally built in 1522 for wealthy cloth merchant Robert Strode, Parnham is one of the oldest and most historic estates in Dorset. A big restoration is soon to get underway – but ahead of the transformation, visitors are being invited in to catch a glimpse at Parnham before it enters its next chapter. For the first time current owners Sophie and James Perkins will be opening the estate up for tours, including the chance to see James’ personal collection of natural history and antiques. While you’re there, be sure to try out the Michelin-recognised walled garden restaurant, which features a seasonal menu made with produce harvested on-site alongside the day’s freshest catch from local boats. Tours start on 10 April, running one Friday per month at 11am, tickets are £20pp. parnhampark.co.uk

Read The Daffodil Days

Looking for your next spring read? Our book reviewer Belinda Bamber has a recommendation: Helen Bain’s The Daffodil Days. ‘In July 1961 the newly-married poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes fell in love with Court Green, a tumbledown, ochre-hued thatch cottage in Devon,’ she writes. ‘Abandoning London for the dream of raising their young children in the countryside, they were so close “you couldn't get a piece of paper between the two of them”, according to a friend. Tragically, Ted walked out just over a year later, and Sylvia ended her life soon after. But this novel by Helen Bain covers the brief idyll when Sylvia kept hens and bees, planted vegetables, gathered daffodils and painted vintage furniture with hearts and flowers. Bain brings Sylvia to life with extraordinary skill, voicing each chapter from the perspective of a different villager to conjure this tall, confident, demanding, courageous and vulnerable American, as she tries to fit into rural English life. It's exquisitely written.’ Out now (Bloomsbury)

Check Out Ottie’s Salon At Bertrand’s Townhouse

There’s a new boutique bolthole in the storied Bloomsbury neighbourhood, and while it’s well worth booking a stay, you can check it out without checking in via the characterful hotel bar. Ottie’s Salon is an intimate speakeasy-cum-salon inspired by the area’s legendary gatherings. Just round the corner from The British Museum it’s sure to become a neighbourhood hotspot for guests, locals and visitors, with the moody atmosphere and colourful character bringing plenty of charm; though not as much as the staff, who are always – discreetly – on hand for service, a recommendation, or just a chat. It is also home to an already popular cigar lounge and a pretty outdoor garden terrace that will come into its own this summer. Order the French 75 cocktail and the mushroom ravioli. Upstairs, hotel guests can enjoy enormous comfy beds, Smeg mini fridges and a complimentary minibar and rainfall showers in neat, comfortable rooms with charming design details. Read our full hotel review here.

Watch The New David Attenborough Documentary

There are few broadcasters who have made as much of a positive impact than David Attenborough. A true British national treasure, he’s turning 100 on 8 May 2026 and the BBC is marking the occasion by giving us a bumper week of Attenborough content – including a new documentary. Now streaming on BBC iPlayer is Secret Garden, a five-part series which explores the surprising animals inhabiting our backyards – from dormice in South Wales and otters in Oxfordshire to blue tits in Bristol and pine martens in the Western Highlands. ‘Theirs is no cosy existence – even in these beautiful and seemingly genteel surroundings the rules of the wild still operate,’ reads the synopsis. By speaking to the gardeners behind these wild spaces, the show also highlights how we can help save struggling species. Eighty percent of Brits have access to a garden, and how we manage them affects whole wildlife populations – so together, we can make a big impact. Watch on BBC iPlayer.

Visit One Of London’s Best Hotel Bakeries

Back in the day, bars were the heart of fancy hotels. But in 2026 there’s much more hype around hotel bakeries, particularly in London where many of the five-stars are luring in guests with celebrity pastry chefs and ultra-luxe patisserie. World-famous baker Cedric Grolet is showcasing his culinary art at The Berkeley, serving up his signature ‘trompe l’œil’ creations: desserts that look like whole fruits but are actually complex pastries. At The Savoy’s Scoff it’s all about scones, which are filled and topped with unique flavours, like strawberries and cream, pina colada, tiramisu and exotic fruit punch. Claridge’s Bakery opened at the start of 2026 with the prestigious Richard Hart at the helm, focusing on nostalgic British baked goods like jammie dodger tarts, French fancies, Belgian buns and iced fingers. And At The Connaught’s rose-hued bakery, Nicolas Rouzaud and his team offer an exquisite selection of baked goods inspired by the changing seasons (but be aware an eat-in dessert will set you back a cool £17). Which takes your fancy?

Trust the weather forecast during this transitional season when you’re planning your office workwear. ‘It might look sunny outside but resist the urge to become overexcited prematurely,’ warns stylist Alice Hare. ‘Offices often have freezing air conditioning and there will still be a chill in the air on the commute for a good couple of months.’ To help ward off the lingering chill, she suggests having a few lightweight layers in your office capsule wardrobe.
