More things to do this week/end in London

With thanks to Country and Town House:

Dear Reader,

I was always told to look up – especially when wandering around our beautiful capital city. I was in Bloomsbury on Tuesday and noticed an old umbrella factory sign and felt a tug of longing for simpler times. Now, I'd like to propose a campaign not to look up even, but at eye-level. I'm just as bad, but we are turning into phone-addicted, eyes-down zombies. Walking down the street (oops, mind the lamppost), sitting on the tube, plugged in and tuned out to the world – and people – around you, sitting on the park bench scrolling while your kid digs alone in the sand (I saw this just yesterday and my heart broke just a little). Do we think we have a problem here? Well, we know we do, which is why we're campaigning for our children not to have smartphones at school: I'd argue they shouldn't have smartphones at all until they're 18. I'd argue that if we stepped back a bit and actually saw what was happening to us, we'd think we'd lost the plot. Maybe social unacceptance is the only way out of this... I gave up smoking once – it was like freedom. Maybe we should all unshackle ourselves a bit more.

Have a wonderful weekend.

WATCH: Half Man

If you had the pleasure of watching Baby Reindeer back when it first landed on Netflix in 2024, you will remember that it was barely a pleasure at all. But before creator Richard Gadd dissected his personal life for Britain’s – and the world’s – very public consumption, he penned a very different television series, one set in his homeland of Scotland. This is Half Man, which launched on BBC iPlayer in the wee hours of the morning, with new episodes landing weekly on Fridays until the end of May. And while he does star in Half Man, luckily there’s no more true stories for Gadd – for now, at least. Instead he plays the explosive, impulsive Ruben, who shows up at the wedding of childhood best friend of Niall (Jamie Bell), reuniting the duo for the first time in years, and catapulting us all back on a journey through their adolescence, into the adulthood that splintered their friendship. Episode 1 streaming now on BBC iPlayer.

READ: Leïla Slimani's New Book

I'll Take the Fire is the third book in Leïla Slimani's acclaimed Moroccan trilogy, an addictive family saga in which three generations of women navigate the day-to-day frustrations of love and life within the constraints of a deeply patriarchal culture,’ writes our book reviewer Belinda Bamber. ‘In this final volume, sisters Mia and Inés escape to Paris, the place Slimani herself fled to aged seventeen. She is now President Macron's ambassador for French language and culture but never forgets her Moroccan roots, and this novel contains a touching fictional portrait of her late, much-loved father, a government economist in Rabat. I'll Take the Fire is a fine standalone novel that touches your heart even more deeply if you've followed the family's story from the beginning. As a whole, the trilogy gives a remarkable personal insight into decades of political struggle in this beautiful and extraordinary country.’ Don’t miss our interview with Slimani hereOut 24 April (Faber, £16.99)

EAT: Make The Most Of Asparagus Season

The British asparagus season runs from yesterday, 23 April (St George’s Day), until the summer solstice in June, so you just have a couple of months to make the most of it. It’s the ultimate spring vegetable – delicious grilled, steamed, stir-fried or roasted – and works well both as a central ingredient in risotto, soups and pasta dishes, as well as served as a side dish. But how are the chefs cooking it? Ben Tish (Cubitt House) loves to BBQ asparagus ‘so that it retains bite and goes all peppery’. He also likes to slowly cook the stems in the foaming butter with shallots and capers – ‘really delicious’. Here are some more asparagus recipe ideas.

Banham Is Spotlighting British Collections

C&TH Partnership

Often, the most valuable possessions in our homes aren’t the ones that cost the most money – they’re the sentimental items that tell our stories. Protecting our properties, therefore, is personal; it’s about safeguarding the pieces of life that hold meaning. This belief sits at the heart of British brand Banhamand its new campaign designed to celebrate the unique treasures we cherish. Protect What You Cherish highlights real-life stories of the wonderfully British, eccentric collections we keep under lock and key, kicking off with Kirsty Johnstone who shares her remarkable assortment of antique teddy bears. You can read her story here.

Whether you’re supporting a friend or just there to soak up the electric atmosphere, the London Marathon is always a feel-good day out in the capital. The annual event returns for its 46th edition this Sunday, with thousands of participants primed to lace up and run 26.2 miles around the city streets – cheered on by crowds and live music. It kicks off in Greenwich Park, weaving past landmarks like Tower Bridge and The London Eye before ending on The Mall beside Buckingham Palace, meaning there are plenty of great spots for spectators to set up camp. And, of course, this is London, so there are plenty of pubs along the route too – nip into The Cutty Sark beside the River Thames (one of the capital’s most historic pubs) or await your running pals at The Westminster, which isn’t far from the finish line. Taking part? Best of luck, and be sure to make the most of all the freebies on offer.

Watch A Documentary For Earth Day

Sir David Attenborough in the Maasai Mara, Kenya, filming David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. (Keith Scholey / Silverback Films)

Today is Earth Day, which has been celebrated every year since 1970 to raise awareness for environmental issues. Across the globe, people get involved by picking up litter, planting trees and lobbying for improved policies – but another way to mark the day is by tuning into one of the many eye-opening documentaries out there. Chasing Coral, for instance, captures the mass bleaching of the rainforests of the sea brought on by climate change (Netflix), while Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story explores society’s obsession with expiry dates, perfect-looking produce and portion sizes (Apple TV). Of course, there’s also the David Attenborough canon to delve into: A Life On Our Planet is vital viewing, telling the story of his life and how the planet has changed during that time (Netflix). These shows aim to educate and inspire viewers to take positive actions for the sake of our planet – tying in with this year’s Earth Day theme, ‘our power, our planet’, which, according to the organisers of Earth Day, ‘reflects a fundamental truth that transcends political cycles. Environmental stewardship has never depended on a single administration, institution, or election. It is sustained by the daily decisions of communities, educators, workers, innovators, and families who understand that protecting the places they live and work is both a responsibility and a long-term investment.’

Book Shangri-La’s London-Paris Dual-City Break

This year, Shangri-La is inviting guests to plan a dual-city stay at their London and Paris outposts and enjoy VIP cultural experiences in both cities. Read why Rebecca Cox loves a visit to the Shangri-La Paris, with her highlights including the property’s unique history. Opulent French decor is not hard to come by in Paris’ best hotels, but a storied past quite like this one: almost impossible. Shangri-La Paris occupies the former private residence of Prince Roland Bonaparte, a direct descendant of Napoleon Bonaparte. Roland’s daughter, Princess Marie Bonaparte who lived in the property, became a pioneering feminist and psychoanalyst and a close friend of Sigmund Freud, while her father himself was known for his extensive botanical collection that inspires much of the interior decor today. Housed in a late-19th-century building that was meticulously restored before opening as a hotel in 2010, one of its most recognisable features is the sweeping white marble grand staircase, an original statement piece that has featured on-screen multiple times, as well as serving as a favourite spot for a well-planned romantic proposal. Book by 31 December 2026 for a dual-city Shangri-La escape from £3,285 or €3,785, based on one night in each hotel and the mentioned inclusions, shangri-la.com

Whatever You Do, Don’t

Doing the London Marathon this weekend? Don’t wait until Saturday night to start carb loading. ‘A frequent mistake made by athletes is eating one extra large dinner the night before the event,’ says nutritionist Georgia Chilton. ‘The problem with this is that it doesn’t give your body enough time to digest and you might still feel lethargic and perhaps bloated in the morning. On top of that, it’s not as efficient to try to fill your muscles with glycogen from just one meal.’ Instead, she recommends starting to up your carbohydrate intake three to five days prior to the big day.

Watch Unchosen

Londoner trapped at home amid the tube strikes? Luckily Netflix has just released a gripping new drama, with six episodes of sinister goodness ready to binge from today. Unchosen centres on Rosie, played by Three Girls star Molly Windsor who tells C&TH: ‘Rosie is a young woman who is devoted to her faith, family and husband (Asa Butterfield) but then she encounters an outsider, Sam (Fra Fee). Sam turns her world upside down and makes her question everything she’s ever known, whilst hiding his own dark secrets.’ In Molly’s words, ‘Rosie is a very good-hearted person. She has a strong moral compass that drives her to make some very bold and scary decisions. She has also grown up in a community in which the women do not have the freedom to voice their opinions or make decisions.’ As much as it’s a story about repression, however, it’s a story about freedom as Rosie grapples to land on the right path. ‘So much happens during the six episodes and Rosie goes on such a big journey,’ Molly summarises. Read the full interview hereSix episodes streaming now on Netflix.

Miss the end of native oyster season. The season runs from early September through to the end of April, which means that it is drawing to a close ahead of warmer months. We shouldn't take this for granted, either, warns Ed Campbell, head chef at the White Hart Inn, Mersea Island. 'Each year, the size and supply of natives have been dwindling due to global sea temperatures rising,' he explains, 'which then affects spawning and has caused a shift in habitat suitability. Rock oysters seem to thrive, but colder waters are what natives want. We're looking forward to September when natives return, but it will be more like mid to the end of October before they hit the menu.' Make the most of the mollusc now!

Try A Dark Shower

Struggling to get a good night’s shuteye? The latest sleep hack to go viral online is dark showering – and unlike many social media fads, this one is backed by science. The sleep perks of taking a hot bath or shower before bed have been well-documented: the hot water temporarily heats you up before triggering a rapid cool down afterwards, which aids the natural body’s natural temperature regulation process and results in better sleep. Meanwhile, studies show the type of light we see in the hours leading up to bedtime has a critical effect on sleep as light regulates our circadian rhythms – while also influencing the body’s production of melatonin, AKA the sleep hormone. The principles of dark showering also ring true in Ayurvedic medicine. ‘“Dark showering” isn’t a traditional Ayurvedic term, but it reflects a broader concept from Ayurveda known as Snāna, or mindful bathing, described in texts like the Charaka Samhita,’ explains Dr. Vijay Murthy, Ayurvedic doctor and founder of The Murthy Clinic. ‘Bathing was seen as a daily reset for both body and mind, ideally done in a calm, non-stimulating environment.’ Keen to give it a go? Don’t go full dark mode: dim lights or a couple of candles will prevent accidents (a non-slip mat would also be welcome).

Emulate The Boston Apartment In The Drama

Courtesy of A24

Have you managed to catch The Drama at the cinema yet? Starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya as a soon-to-be wed couple, the film witnesses the shiny veneer of their relationship crumble following a dinner party gone awry. But beyond the, ahem, drama unfolding onscreen, it’s the chic Boston brownstone apartment – filled with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, art-covered walls and a sleek spiral staircase – at the centre of the film that has us hooked. ‘Thanks to the expert vision of production designer Zosia Mackenzie, the apartment feels much more than just a backdrop. It serves as an extension of the couple’s relationship – modern and polished on the surface, yet rich with subtle layers that hint at something brewing beneath the surface,’ agrees Sarah Ross, co-founder of Addison Ross. ‘The design mirrors their dynamic: elegant, yet full of depth, and perfectly suited to the drama unfolding within.’ To recreate it at home, Sarah’s top tips include sticking to a neutral palette, balancing clean lines with comfort and choosing art that resonates with your style; find the full guide here.

Stoke Newington bakery Jolene has become one of London’s hottest celebrity hangouts in recent years, attracting everyone from Harry Styles to Paul Mescal and Keira Knightley. And now, the brand is expanding with a new branch, opening today in the flagship store of London-founded fashion store Aries in Soho. Pop in to try one of the signature pastries made with Wildfarmed regenerative flours, such as rhubarb, frangipane and almond Danishes; flaky pains aux raisins; and jalapeno and cream cheese buns. Or visit for lunch, choosing from a daily line-up of sandwiches filled with the likes of bacon and leek with garlicky aioli and rocket; or braised fennel with creamy goats cheese and pickled onions. Dr. David Jack’s Korean Glass Skin Facial is a cult favourite for a reason. Ellie Smith headed to the Liberty clinic to give it a try, and can confirm it gives you an instant glow that lasts for weeks. ‘The treatment begins with a deep cleanse, followed by a micropeel (a tad stingy but suitable for even the most sensitive of skin), pore cleansing with a special tool and a bubbling oxygen mask. But my favourite part was the deeply relaxing Golki lymphatic drainage massage which left my skin feeling lifted and snatched. After 15 minutes under the red light mask, my therapist slathered my skin in serum and moisturiser to maximise that glass-like effect; I returned to the streets of Oxford Circus feeling like a new woman.’ Find more of London’s best facials here£195, drdavidjack.com
