Serendipity, Strategy, and the Power of Partnerships
Professor Duncan Sharp

In his inaugural lecture, Professor Duncan Sharp, Dean of the School of Health, reflects on a career shaped as much by unexpected conversations as by deliberate choice.

Drawing on experiences across research, health innovation, leadership and knowledge exchange, he explores the space between chance and design — how serendipity favours the prepared mind, why strategy must turn values into action, and why partnerships should create lasting public value.

Processional cultures: Cultural continuity and community resilience
Dr Louise Platt

Drawing on her research, Louise explores how processional cultures, from Whit Walks and Rose Queen Carnivals to brass band parades have shaped Northern working-class identities. Focusing on the Manchester and Salford Whit Walks, held in the city centre since 1801, she examines procession as a lived practice of placemaking, ritual, and cultural continuity. The talk also introduces her ongoing work mapping regional processions and their role in shaping post-industrial identities.

Tuesday 3 March 12:00 - 13:00

INSIDE/OUT: Matthew Xia

In this Q&A, Matthew Xia will discuss his approach to directing, the role of regional theatres, and how storytelling underpins his creative practice.

A multiple award-winning theatre director, cultural leader and multi-disciplinary artist, Matthew’s work moves fluidly between stages, streets and communities. He began his career at Stratford East as a young actor and DJ under the name Excalibah — an unorthodox path through performance and music that continues to shape his distinctive, audience-focused approach today.

Exploring the lives of some of history’s most infamous royal mistresses, from the maîtresse-en-titre of the French court to the passionate liaisons of the English monarch. Hot Off The Press! Bradford Libraries up for a tasty Award

We served up a Michelin Star menu of events during last year's Big Tasty Read and we've now been named as a finalist in the Bookseller Library of the Year Award.

Our libraries invited people across the district to enjoy a delicious new programme of free events last Autumn as part of The Big Tasty Read – a national celebration of reading inspired by the joy of food.

The Big Tasty Read was part of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture and was run in partnership with The Reading Agency and BBC Arts. We used the universal love of food to bring people together and encourage more adults to enjoy reading.

Throughout the Autumn, libraries across Bradford hosted a tasty mix of events including author talks, writing workshops, food-themed crafts, film screenings, and cooking sessions.

We need you, we need each other!

We’ve been invited by Culture Croydon to create two happenings at Braithwaite Hall, Croydon Clocktower to celebrate International Women's Day 2026
Panel Discussion: What would an international gallery of women’s work look like?

6.30–8.30pm, Friday 6 March 2026

Join a panel discussion with artists Raksha Patel, Carole Wright, Alana Jelinek, Rayvenn Shaleigha D’Clark and B Atherton.

Free, but booking recommended.

Book your place
And then some chaos: All Women Are Artists...and they can’t fit us all in the Inter-National Gallery

3–9pm, Saturday 7 March 2026

A ferocious celebration of women’s creativity in all its forms, exploring and honouring the things our hands make, the solutions we find for impossible problems, the beauty we carve into the day, the relationships we navigate, the stories we keep alive and the visions we share.

This is a women's space – co-created together. Do you have a skill to share? Is there something you want to speak about? Can you organise the tea station? Are you simply bringing your curiosity? All women are welcome.

What to expect:

Work together to make a celebration of women's art. We have space; time; food; Iftar meal; discussion; activity; purpose; dancing.

Through conversation, talks, activities and making we are going to create a group photograph – a co-created masterpiece – made by and for women. Then we are going to eat fabulous food and dance to music by DJ Devolicious.

3-5pm Open Mic Art Talk

Sign up for 10-minute slots and tell us about your grandma, the idea in your pocket, your PhD, or hanging out the washing. Dance your words, and roar the things that trip you up.

3-5pm Collective Making

Share a skill, learn a skill, make without skill. Work towards our co-created masterpiece – make a costume, a prop, an accessory. Adorn yourself or the room ready for the culminating moment. Can you host a workshop station for some of the afternoon?

5pm Culminating Masterpiece Moment

We’ll all come together for a culminating masterpiece moment. We will create an extraordinary group photograph. Everything that has happened before is for this moment. The big bang. The masterpiece is created and everyone will receive a copy.

5.54pm (approx) Ramadan Fast Breaking
For those who are fasting, and those who aren't, we will take a moment.

6pm Evening Meal
Food and soft drinks will be provided.

 7-9pm Dancing and Social
Dance, if you want to, to music by DJ Devolicious.

We’ve scheduled Saturday so there's also time to go on the Million Women Rise march if you want to.

Croydon Clocktower is 10–15 minutes' walk from either West Croydon or East Croydon Station. Trains from Victoria or London Bridge take approximately 15 minutes to East Croydon.

Free. Booking is important to help us get the right amount of food in.

And in Lancashire

Evening, Wednesday 18 March 2026

Our Dark Moon Film Club next meets for a Chaand Raat celebration in Accrington on Wednesday 18 March.

The Physic Garden in Nelson is starting to wake up – the timetable for public open days and plant studies will be with you soon, as will other news.

If you would like to receive announcements on WhatsApp about events and activities in Lancashire you can join us via the QR code below.

Idle Women is an arts and social justice collaboration founded by artists.

Our projects reach for something beyond the horizon, creating transformative spaces for women that can't be cut, closed or taken away. Spaces include the Physic Garden, Selina Cooper (narrowboat), physicgarden.network and stadiumfuture.space.

We are a collaboration with women from any and all walks of life. We believe women deserve better and work to our strengths because we know that transformation is a daily process, there are always other ways and beauty is complicated.

Weekly Escape

Hey

After the amount of rain we’ve had lately, I’ve started doing something I don’t normally do when planning weekends…

I now always keep a backup plan.

The last few sunny days have been lovely, but we all know Yorkshire weather likes to change its mind. So just in case the rain returns, I thought I’d share an indoor activity I genuinely loved: Junkyard Mini Golf in Leeds.

I’ve now played all three courses there, and every time I’ve gone I’ve left grinning.

It’s not really mini golf as you’d imagine it. It’s more like stepping into a themed film set crossed with a house party. Each course is completely different - you might find yourself putting past creepy circus clowns, sliding off a smashed-up Mini into a neon rave room, or navigating pirate pigs and a toxic volcano (yes, really).

The theming is brilliant and surprisingly immersive, and the holes are just the right level of challenging - fun without being frustrating. I put off the clown course for ages thinking it might be scary, but it turned out to be one of the most imaginative and fun ones.

There are cocktail bars dotted around the venue too, which definitely adds to the atmosphere, and it works just as well for:

  • a date night
  • a group outing
  • or a family trip with older kids

It’s one of those rare activities where you completely forget about the weather outside for a couple of hours.

I honestly would go back and play every course again. It’s silly, colourful, and surprisingly memorable - exactly the kind of outing you need after a grey week!

If junkyard isn't your kind of vibe or you're looking for an alternative to do with younger kids, read my review of Hole in Wand mini golf here - now open in York and Leeds!

Until our next adventure,
