Our top picks

This month we asked Liz, our Artistic Planning & Programme Manager, what she's most looking forward to hearing this season. Liz says: "I'm really looking forward to Jeneba Kanneh-Mason’s concert, in particular her performance of William Grant Still’s Summerland from Three Visions. Evoking the soul’s passage into the afterlife, the piece, although short in length, is incredibly moving. With clear influences of Debussy, Still’s work is beautifully complemented in the programme by Debussy’s La fille aux cheveux de lin, a piece I enjoyed studying at school many years ago."

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde
Sat 21 Feb, 7.30pm

By Robert Louis Stevenson
Adapted and performed by Mark Stratford

'Jekyll and Hyde' - a mystery tale about the timeless conflict between good and evil - caused a sensation when it was published in 1886. In this highly acclaimed, gripping solo play, Mark Stratford offers a compelling and faithful adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s gothic classic.

In fog-bound Victorian London, Gabriel Utterson works as a respectable lawyer. Concerned by a strange clause in his friend Henry Jekyll’s will, Utterson investigates the sinister Edward Hyde – Jekyll’s unlikely protégé. Convinced that Jekyll and Hyde’s relationship is founded on blackmail, Utterson embarks on a quest to learn more but, as he does so, finds the truth to be far worse than he could have ever imagined...

★★★★★ ‘A truly mesmerising performance’ (North West End UK)

★★★★ "A gripping one-man show. (Stratford's) performance held the theatre spellbound...It is a model of what a one-person play should be...Be prepared to be scared - and entertained" (ReviewsGate)

★★★★ ‘Stratford’s stellar performance carries the play' (The Reviews Hub)

★★★★ ‘As the story unfolds, we begin to see moments of Mr Hyde, and from here on in we are well and truly hooked’ (Views from the Gods)

★★★★ ‘A wonderfully accessible and faithful version of the story performed with skill and precision’ (Fairy Powered Productions)

‘A gripping piece of theatre...Get along to Stratford’s show and see the characters come alive’ (British Theatre Guide)

Double BAFTA award-winning presenter, Sam Nixon first appeared on our screens as a contestant on Pop Idol back in 2003 and is probably best known as one half of the hugely popular TV duo, Sam and Mark.

Sam is a Theatre Royal Wakefield legend, having been a part of our pantomime since 2019. Most recently, you will have seen him on our stage as Jack Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk. We are thrilled to be welcoming him back on our stage this March for a special Gala performance!

Alongside Sam, pantomime icon, Chris Hannon will be bringing his signature charm and wit to the Gala Night. Chris has been starring in our panto for 15 years and is the talented writer behind the script! His latest role was Tracey Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk.

To complete the Trott family reunion, the wonderful Meg Elsegood is returning to our stage. Meg began her training at our Performance Academy and was in our pantomime chorus. She has since appeared on our stage many times, including her role as Jill Trott in Jack and the Beanstalk.

There are three types of tickets on offer for our Gala Night.

Why not make it a night to remember and upgrade to our three-course dinner or champagne reception tickets?

Three-Course Dinner & Champagne Reception & Show

Indulge in a pre-show dinner in elegant surroundings, followed by the reception and performance.

Champagne Reception & Show

Toast the occasion with bubbles before the curtain rises.

“He’s a man with genuinely funny bones”
The Sunday Times
ROB ROUSE: FUNNY BONES
Fri 20 March, 8pm

Star of BBC’s Upstart Crow, 8 Out of 10 Cats, The Friday Night Project and Dave’s One Night Stand.

Since winning the prestigious Channel 4 So You Think You’re Funny Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1998, Rob Rouse has toured the world for the last 27 years! Fortunately, over a quarter of a century in ‘the biz’ hasn’t made him (me – obviously I’m writing this) in the slightest bit sensible..

Funny Bones is Rob’s brand-new stand-up show: a relentlessly funny and daft evening of comedy, from a one-man whirlwind who pulls the audience into his craftily spun tall tales with bucketfuls of manic energy, first-class stagecraft, eerily convincing characters, and a barrage of brilliant one-liners.

Book your Tickets!

Recently awarded Comics’ Comic - Best Act - at the UK Comedy Awards, as well as Best Act at the Yorkshire Comedy Awards 2025.

“One of my favourite comics. A very silly and funny man” — Greg Davies

“Rob Rouse is a joy machine, a natural clown” — Kerry Godliman

“An extraordinary comedian” — Jess Fostekew, The Independent

“I have been helpless with laughter watching Rob on stage. Pure, joyful,
hilarious stand up. He’s one of the best there is. He’s a very silly man. Very silly
indeed” -
Marcus Brigstocke

“Rob is always hilarious, and has total command, without fail he leaves a room
vibrant and joyful” -
Nina Conti

Weekly Escape

Hey

Last week, I did something a little different…

For Christmas, I bought James tickets to a jazz night at Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds. It's not something we’d usually do, but as someone who dreams of visiting New Orleans, it felt like the perfect little surprise.

And honestly? It was magical.

As soon as the music started, it was easy to forget about the frigid Yorkshire winter outside. With a cocktail in hand, surrounded by candlelight and brass instruments, it felt like we’d been whisked away to a cosy bar on Bourbon Street. The room was filled with the warm, lively sounds of trombones, trumpets, and smooth vocals - a mix of classic jazz tunes and spontaneous improvisation that made the whole night feel alive.

We heard everything from When the Saints Go Marching In to Hello Dolly, and by the end of the hour I was already wondering when we could come back. It was one of those rare nights out that feels both relaxed and special - the kind you remember long after the music fades.

The Jazz Room runs a series of intimate live jazz evenings at Belgrave, with different themed shows throughout the year - from New Orleans classics to soul and Frank Sinatra tributes.

Just so you know, the ticket links below are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you book through them, at no extra cost to you. It helps support Get Lost in Yorkshire and allows me to keep sharing hidden gems like this - and I’d only ever recommend something I’ve genuinely loved.

Upcoming shows include:

If you’re looking for a cosy, romantic, and completely different night out this winter (or a lovely gift for a music lover), this one is well worth a look.

Until our next adventure,
