It's never too early to look forward to spring.

Start dreaming of green shoots and blossom with a series of events rooted in our latest contemporary art show at Leeds Art Gallery.

Read on to find out more about Plant Dreaming and the different ways to explore themes within the exhibition.

Plant Dreaming:

An exhibition of works about plants, and their real and imagined histories

Until 19 April

Featuring large-scale textiles, as well as ceramics, drawings, photography, and film, Plant Dreaming encourages us to think about different types of plant knowledge, and how they relate to ecopolitics and the self.

This group exhibition brings together recent works by contemporary artists that look at plants from a poetic or narrative perspective, rather than through a scientific lens. They celebrate modes of knowledge that draw on the power of the imagination, stories, folklore, and ritual, encouraging us to reconsider the position of humans in our interconnected world.

Featuring artists including Noémie GoudalAliyah HussainJane LawsonYan Wang Preston, SHARPEmma Talbot and Charmaine Watkiss.

Holocaust Memorial Day - January 27th 2026

'The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2026, 'Bridging Generations', is a call-to-action. A reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors - it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us. This theme encourages us all to engage actively with the past - to listen, to learn and to carry those lessons forward. By doing so, we build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future.' Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | Bridging Generations: Theme for 2026

Pictureville Cinema

📽️What's On: 30 January – 5 February

Welcome to your weekly cinema listings.

In case you missed the big news on Friday, our first print screenings of 2026 are on the way as we have secured just one of four 70mm prints of The Testament of Ann Lee from 20 February. It's a great chance to see our world-class projection team in action and a real coup for Pictureville so we hope to see you all there.

There's plenty to enjoy before then, as this week's screenings take us from a silent masterpiece from Buster Keaton to a vivid portrait of 60s Lisbon to a reimagining of the French New Wave from Before Trilogy director Richard Linklater.

What's On in IMAX

No Other Choice

Screening daily (closed Monday and Tuesday)

The latest exhibit suggesting Park Chan-wook may be the most elegant filmmaker alive follows an unemployed man who devises a unique plan to secure a new job: eliminate his competition.

It's the director's and MUBI's first IMAX release, so don't miss out on this masterful and murderous film on our biggest screen, and make sure to catch our retrospective of Park's other iconic films in the next few weeks.

“With humour blacker than black bean noodles, the film is a masterful work of cinema which might well be Chan-wook’s masterpiece. And given this is the man who directed The Handmaiden that’s saying a lot.” – Time Out

For Fans of: Parasite; Decision to Leave; Bugonia

Directed by Richard Linklater, the creative mind behind BoyhoodSchool of Rock and the Before Trilogy comes this must-see homage to the art of cinema.

“For devoted film-lovers, Nouvelle Vague is a must-see—a joyful homage to the art of cinema that’ll have you queuing at your local repertory cinema as soon as the credits roll.” – Time Out

Belarmino

Cine Spotlights: Belarmino (15) [With Bruno Castro Intro]

Sat 18.30

Belarmino (1964) is a gripping portrait of a former boxing champion whose glory has faded into a life of struggle. Blending documentary and fiction, Fernando Lopes captures the athlete's twilight career while painting a vivid picture of the man—and of 1960s Lisbon.

Film curator Bruno Castro, who rescued the film from international oblivion, will challenge us on what we know as docufiction as genre. In a quiz-like interactive talk, he'll explore how cinéma vérité techniques and sharp cinematography were used to build a one of a kind film, breaking with conventional narrative forms.

A slam dunk

We're kicking off 2026 with a huge announcement – A Poet in Every Port is coming to coastal communities across the UK! Read on to find out how to get involved, plus discover upcoming live poetry events on site too.

On the road

A graphic of the words A Poet in every Port

A Poet in Every Port

The National Poetry Library hits the road in our Mobile Poetry Library. We're touring 11 coastal locations across the UK to share our unique poetry collection and celebrate our 75th anniversary.

Inspired by the 1951 Festival of Britain and its travelling exhibitions, we’re partnering with organisations and festivals nationwide to bring poetry directly to local communities through free events, readings and workshops.

At the heart of the project is a special New Poets Collective, made up of poets from each of the tour's locations; poets who’ll work closely with their communities to celebrate local dialects, share stories and show that poetry is for everyone.

Meet the project’s ambassador

Roger McGough is an all-time bestselling poet and a pivotal figure in modern poetry. His work brings a signature blend of Merseyside wit, accessibility and warmth that welcomes readers into its pages. It's a style that makes him the perfect figurehead to champion our shared voyage.

More Than One Story

A powerful act of creative truth-telling. This debut collection features 37 writers, including Malorie Blackman and Inua Ellams, exploring lived experiences of homelessness through monologues of resilience, rage and hope.

Nature slumbers

To close out January, we've chosen the poem Hushed is the buzz of the noisy world by George Gissing.

Hushed is the buzz of the noisy world,

Gently each bird to its home is flitting,

The flags o’er the sun’s bright path are furled,

Soon will each flower with the dew be pearled

As asleep it lies unwitting.

Help shape the future of CalderdaleCreates

CalderdaleCreates is becoming a member-led non-profit, and we’re looking for people from across Calderdale’s creative and cultural sector to help shape what happens next.

There are different ways to get involved - from joining the wider Network through signing up to the directory, to standing for the Board, or contributing through a Working Group. No previous governance experience needed - just a willingness to take part and represent the sector thoughtfully.

Just Out: Heritage Micro-Commission

The CalderdaleCreates Community Member Directory

Be part of our growing creative community.

🎨 Joining the Directory helps you connect with others, discover opportunities, and stay in the loop with what’s happening across Calderdale. You can benefit from our wider support, vote in the upcoming elections, join a working group - the link to sign up is here.

Weekly Escape

Hey

If you’re anything like me, this time of year makes you crave quiet wanders, muddy boots, and a flask of something warm in your hands.

And if there’s a hidden waterfall waiting at the end? Even better.

One of my absolute favourite winter walks is to Goit Stock Waterfall, tucked away in West Yorkshire woodland. This little-known beauty near Bingley is one of those places that feels like a true discovery every time you visit – especially when the trees are bare, the path is a little frosty, and the sound of the waterfall echoes through the quiet woods.

✨ Expect peaceful trails, moss-covered rocks, and that feeling of “wow, how have I never been here before?”

It’s not a new post, but this one’s an old favourite for good reason. The blog has everything you need to plan your visit—from where to park to what shoes you’ll want to wear (trust me, it gets a little rocky near the falls).

So if you’re looking for your next weekend walk, why not give Goit Stock a try?

Wrap up warm and enjoy the magic 🥾🍂

Until our next adventure,
