Hello 2026!
First of all Happy New Year!

We have been planning. We have been programming. Soon it will be curtain up!

We have a great line up of events this year and you are welcome to join us every step of the way.

As ever, all of the shows are Pay What You Decide (after the event) and we aim to bring you the best in new writing and innovative theatre and dance. Whether you are a new audience member, old friend, returning artist or performing here for the first time, you are all incredibly welcome.
Tickets and More Information
theOBJECTproject return with their latest slice of clown/puppet dystopia, following in the wake of PIXIEMATOSIS and The Ballad of the Underwater Daughter!

The Tower and the Telescope takes an absurd, sideways look at life and love through a cracked, greasy lens. A show is stuffed with darkly relatable puppets, wonky machines and hilariously dingy surprises.
Can something broken ever truly be mended?
When Matt was little, their dad bought a classic car. A 1954 Sunbeam Talbot Mark II. Dad had ideas that he and Matt would do it up, repair, rebuild together.
Together, Matt and his drag alter-ego Natalie will try to ask, in an increasingly broken world, how might we repair ourselves, together?
Fantasy meets punk with a Teesside twist.
A joyfully chaotic celebration of youth expression and identity.

With homes feeling inhabitable, and youth services thinning, Bus Stop Goths is a surreal modern folktale which centres around alt youth and their sacred outdoor spaces of which they reside.
In 2004, in the Super Bowl halftime show finale, 23 year old Justin Timberlake ripped off 37 year old Janet Jackson’s top. Her breast was exposed on screen for nine sixteenths of a second.

Nine Sixteenths is a journey through 3 acts, exploring themes of representation and pop culture with a nostalgia for the early 00’s, and the hopes and dreams of 4 black female performers through a visual variety of devised theatre, dance and lip sync.
Story telling meets dance, live music meets clowning. An intimate spectacle of identity, where being British, Iranian, and a Hip-Hop head collide.

An intimate spectacle of identity, it's through meeting a series of weird and wonderful characters from across the world that Bobak is finally able to truly know himself.

Hang on.... is that it?

No. #facts

There is so much more coming up throughout the year; Wright&Grainger return with their new show Selene, Ruxy Cantir joins us for the first time with Pickled Republic, silliness for all the family with the Colosseum of Chaos and plenty more besides!

See you soon!

Tune into Tradition

Hi

Would you like to hear a tune?

In Ireland, traditional music is far more than just entertainment. Arriving with the Celts some 2,000 years ago and passed down from generation to generation, Irish trad tells the stories of our history with songs full of love, loss, resilience, and rebellion.

From spontaneous sessions (musical gatherings) to annual festivals, Irish music is often the soundtrack to any time spent exploring its emerald shores. What began as a way to preserve oral history through song soon began influencing music around the world, due to cultural diffusion as people emigrated and took their music with them. A vital part of Irish heritage, today the music is seen as a celebration—a festival, a wedding, a homecoming—but also as a means of relaxing, listening in, and sharing a moment with the local community.

Ireland’s magic also goes far beyond the melody. It is found in the country’s monastic ruins, ancient stone forts, colourful coastal villages, and beautiful, wild landscapes. Our fully-guided trips are designed for those who would like to experience the traditional heart of Ireland, to discover the stories, places, and history that have shaped our shores.

So why not join us for a thoughtfully crafted trip, filled with local secrets and full of good vibrations?

CalderdaleCreates Culture Symposium | Thursday 22 January

If you’re planning to attend the Culture Symposium and haven’t booked yet, places are still available.

The day focuses on the practical realities of co-creating artistic work with communities, with sessions exploring:

  • how equitable relationships are built and sustained

  • what co-creation looks like in practice, not just in principle

  • how impact is evidenced when working collaboratively

  • shared learning from artists, organisations, funders and community partners

It’s a space for reflection, discussion and peer learning - designed to support confident, thoughtful social practice across Calderdale.

Optional workshop - booking required

A limited number of places are available for an optional practical workshop with Common/Wealth, focused on co-creation in practice.

  • 20 places

  • Symposium ticket required

  • First come, first served

Also, don’t miss…

Sessions including The Making - Successes & Failures, Building Equitable RelationshipsFunding and Co-Created Evaluation and Creative Communities in Calderdale, with contributions from Common/Wealth, Chol Theatre, Global Majority Collective, Visits Unlimited, Curious Motion, Shared Harmonies, Arts Council England, CFFC, Halifax Opportunities Trust, North Halifax Partnership and the Centre for Cultural Value, and artist Lowri Evans.

Our Lunchtime Learning sessions return this February with a short programme of online sessions shaped by feedback from CalderdaleCreates members.

Designed for creative freelancers, organisations and practitioners at all stages, these sessions offer practical insight into governance, advocacy and how the creative sector is represented.

As CalderdaleCreates prepares to become its own legal entity, with new board and working group opportunities ahead, these sessions also offer a helpful introduction to board roles and directorship, and how to advocate and represent the value of culture and creativity, on behalf of yourself, your sector, CalderdaleCreates as a network, and Calderdale as a place.

🔜 More sessions supporting will be announced soon!

All sessions run 12.00 – 1.30pm, online, and are free for CalderdaleCreates Directory Members.

Weekly Escape

Hey

If you’ve already found yourself dreaming of fresh air and a break from the desk this week, I’ve got just the place for you.

One of my intentions for 2026 is to spend more time exploring Yorkshire’s quiet, overlooked pockets of woodland. The kind tucked away behind unassuming gates that even locals often don’t realise are there.

On New Year’s Day, James and I discovered one of those places. Lower Hartley Bank Wood is a small but beautiful woodland hidden away on the outskirts of Huddersfield.

It wasn’t a grand hike or a long trek. The circular walk is just over 1km, a little steep in places, and wonderfully peaceful.

Crisp frozen leaves underfoot, the gentle sound of a stream, bare winter trees opening up dramatic views…and not another soul in sight!

After a challenging 2025, it turned out to be exactly the calm, reflective start to the year I needed.

I’ve shared a full guide on the blog this week, including:
🌿 how to find Lower Hartley Bank Wood
🚗 where to park (it’s simpler than you might expect)
🥾 what the walk is really like underfoot
💙 and why this woodland will always feel like a little slice of calm to me

If you’re looking for a gentle winter walk that feels like a proper reset, I think you’ll really enjoy this one.

👉 Read the full guide here

And if you have a favourite Yorkshire woodland you always return to when you need space to breathe, I’d love to hear about it. Just reply to this email or let me know next time you’re in the Yorkshire Hidden Gems Facebook group.

Here’s to fresh air, quiet paths, and discovering places that make us feel a little more ourselves again.

Until our next adventure,
