Holocaust Memorial Day - January 27th 2026

'The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2026, 'Bridging Generations', is a call-to-action. A reminder that the responsibility of remembrance doesn't end with the survivors - it lives on through their children, their grandchildren and through all of us. This theme encourages us all to engage actively with the past - to listen, to learn and to carry those lessons forward. By doing so, we build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future.' Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | Bridging Generations: Theme for 2026

VR Experience - Meet The Pulse of Bradford

The Pulse of Bradford

Young poets and musicians

Young voices have captured life in Bradford past, present and future in a collection of poems and music which will feature in a series of Virtual Reality films to be launched later this month..

The Project

Three young poets and two musicians aged 16-24 produced original work around the theme of ‘the sounds of the city.’

The group, known as The Pulse of Bradford, worked alongside Halifax poet Gaia Holmes to share their thoughts and feelings about the city with the aim of inviting audiences to see the city through their eyes and give voice to the future of the district.

Their work has now been captured on camera by Virtual Reality filmmakers Neon8 and will feature in a Virtual Reality Tour due to be shown at Bradford Libraries from 30 January to 8 February.

They will also feature in a celebration and Open Mic event due to be held at City Library on Saturday, 7 February at 6pm. Poets and musicians, eager to perform are asked to email Andrea.Hardaker@bradford.gov.uk to book a slot.

These events will all be part of the National Storytelling Week (Feb 2-8) and kickstart the National Year of Reading 2026.

Bradford is one of the nine library services in England selected to participate in the groundbreaking Digital Spaces program. This innovative initiative in collaboration with Arts Council England, BFI, with National Lottery Funding, and The Space, delivered an array of digital experiences in libraries throughout 2025, ranging from awe-inspiring VR showcases and hands-on workshops to funding opportunities for creating new digital content.

Book tickets for 'Fixing'

When Matt was little, their dad bought a classic car, a 1954 Sunbeam Talbot Mark II. Dad had ideas that he and Matt would do it up, repair, rebuild together. They never did, and the car festered in a garage. I mean, Dad had just been through a divorce.

Now in their 30s, Matt would like to learn how to fix a car engine. They’d like to learn a bit more about Dad, and that time, when Dad and Mum split up. The time when Matt and Dad were closest. Matt can’t do this alone, which is tricky for a solo show. That’s where Matt’s drag alter-ego Natalie Spanner comes in. She knows all about things that girls like Natalie know about. Like how to build an engine. About maintenance, care and repair.

Together, Matt and Natalie will try to ask, in an increasingly broken world, how might we repair ourselves, together?

© Tom Platinum Morley

At a time when connections in the world seem to be breaking down more than ever, through global divisive politics, but also on a one-to-one level; Fixing seeks to initiate conversations around care, nurture, rupture and recovery. Fixing invites audiences to consider what maintenance means to them in the context of personal relationships.

Welcoming 2026 with events and learning opportunities

🍂 🍂 🍂

Hello, and welcome to this month’s CalderdaleCreates update.

We’re heading into a busy few weeks, starting with our Co-creating with Communities Symposium on Thursday, followed by the launch of our new Lunchtime Learning sessions in February.

If you care about where Calderdale’s creative sector is heading, the Co-Creating with Communities Symposium is a really good moment to come together, meet others and have your voice heard. We can’t wait to bring it to you with the wonderful Northern Broadsides!

Alongside this, you’ll find the usual mix of funding, opportunities and jobs to dip into at your own pace. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Now, let’s get to it!

Last summer, we ran a series of short online learning sessions designed to fit into your lunch break. Simple, practical, and very much bring a sandwich and learn.

Following feedback from those sessions, we’ve developed the idea further and now have a programme of six Lunchtime Learning events lined up for the coming months. Each session is still designed to be accessible, informal and useful, with a focus on practical skills and real experiences.

The first two sessions are now open for booking. You’ll find them useful if you are planning on joining CalderdaleCreates on a working group or as a director in the Spring elections - have a look below.

Bradford Libraries Take on the Rhyme Challenge 2025–26

Bradford Libraries are inviting families with young children to get involved in the Bradford Libraries Rhyme Challenge 2025–26.

Toddler groups, school settings and stay and play groups have also been taking on the challenge, which was developed by Library Staff, and now the libraries themselves will encourage parents, carers and children aged 0–4 to take part in four weeks of fun, interactive rhyme sessions at their local library. Sharing rhymes, songs and stories helps support early language development, listening skills and confidence, while introducing families to everything their local library has to offer.

Sessions run weekly at different days and times to make it easy for families to join in.

Participants who complete all four sessions at their chosen library, toddler group or childcare setting will receive a Rhyme Challenge certificate, celebrating their achievement and love of rhymes.

Rhyme Challenge sessions are free and open to all families. No booking is required unless stated by the venue.

Creative Kirklees
Latest Events, News and Opportunities

Wednesday, January 21st

Creativity is thriving across Kirklees as we move into the new year, thanks to the people who bring the district to life with their ideas. This newsletter gathers together the latest stories, opportunities, events, and inspiration from our creative community.

February brings two great Festivals to Kirklees - the much‑loved Mrs Sunderland Festival, a highlight of our cultural calendar celebrating music, performance, and artistic talent and the Electric Spring Festival, an annual festival of cutting-edge electronic music with a programme of concerts, installations, workshops and symposia. The month also features Master the Game, a free 5‑day programme from Proper Job Theatre Company designed to help freelancers and creative business owners build skills and move toward financial independence.

There are great opportunities available too, including a role for an Events Co‑ordinator with Kirklees Council, supporting the delivery of high‑quality events in the public realm at Our Cultural Heart.

And if you’re looking to try something new, develop a skill, or simply create with others, there’s a fantastic range of workshops ready to spark your imagination.

And remember you will find lots more at www.creativekirklees.com and www.musicinkirklees.co.uk
