Your monthly round-up of the best of our Magazine
January 2026
Happy New Year! How’re the resolutions going? Sadly, The Tonic can’t help you to keep up the exercise regime, nor keep away from the booze, but if your ‘new year, new you’ routine involves reading even more fascinating articles about the arts, well, are you ever in luck.
The kids may’ve only just been packed off back to school, but like them we’re already looking forward to half-term and the return of our Imagine festival to which four of this month’s pieces are related. Illustrator Liz Pichon discusses the ‘joyous’ Quentin Blake, author Ella McLeod shares her creative process, Jessie Maryon Davies, Andy Day and Supriya Nagarajan tell us about creating music for children, and we’ve an introduction to innovative circus company Upswing.
Beyond Imagine, we’ve a trio of features for music lovers as pianist Alexandra Dariescu shares a playlist of female composers, we look back at live albums recorded in our Royal Festival Hall, and we delve deeper into Igor Stravinsky’s breakout work. And if that wasn’t enough, this month’s video inclusion is an exclusive interview with world-renowned performance artist Marina Abramović. Yes, you’re right, we are spoiling you.

Holocaust Centre North is more than a museum. We are a place where local stories help tell a global history — of the Holocaust, of survival, of rebuilding. We are also a growing community rooted in care, learning, and hope.
ake a look below to see what’s on, explore our collections online, or find ways to get even more from your visit.

Planning your visit
Get all the information you need to plan your visit in advance, including highlights at the Holocaust Centre North and where to head next for a day in West Yorkshire.

Discover us from home
Explore Holocaust Centre North from the comfort of your sofa. From images and stories, to audio extracts, uncover our history and unique collections at home. You can even listen to our Encountering Survival, our audioguide to our exhibition and community, focusing on things that have been lost, stolen, destroyed or that don't take archivable form.

A thousand kisses
This image is a letter from our Archive. The letter is written at the back of the last photo Hilel sent to his family before he was murdered by the Nazis. It ends with the heartbreaking words 'a thousand kisses.'
You can help us preserve this and other collections and ensure that none of them are forgotten. We wouldn't be able to do this without your support.
Can you gift us £5 to safeguard survivors' family papers like this one?

Gift a collection
Holocaust Centre North has a growing collection of original Holocaust-era archive material, photographs and objects donated by survivors and their families. We collect original material relating to the lives of refugees and survivors of the Holocaust who made their homes in the north of England. We aim to preserve this material for the future and make it available for education and research. Contact us if you have a collection that you would be interested in donating to us.

We can't live in a world where the Holocaust is forgotten. Can you?
Please help us ensure that memory is not lost and that the stories of our community of survivors are kept alive –– now, and in generations to come. Your help makes this happen: you make this happen.
