Leeds Libraries Newsletter

Leeds Libraries Newsletter - April 2024

Welcome

We're ready to make the most of spring with a new exhibition coming up, a seed library, fun events, a lovely video about our Code Club at Compton and book news, of course. Read on to find out more!

If you're not already, make sure you're following us on social media to get the latest news and see what we're up to. You can also check out our What's On in Leeds Libraries page on Leeds Inspired for more details.

Beyond the Bassline

Beyond the Bassline exhibition image

We have a new exhibition coming up at the Reginald Centre Community Hub and Library from 25 April, in partnership with the British Library's Living Knowledge Network.

Beyond the Bassline shines a spotlight on different voices and perspectives to celebrate Black British music as a form of entertainment and vehicle for community, as well as a source of liberation, protest and education.

Stepping into carnivals, clubs and record shops across the country, Beyond the Bassline draws on different places that have cultivated creative expression and inspired a number of Black British music genres.

We'll have more details for you very soon, so watch this space!

Cultural Conversations

This talk is part of the Leeds Cultural Conversations series, hosted by the Centre for Culture and Humanities at Leeds Beckett University.

Traditional binA History of Leeds in Five Bins by Dr Henry Irving

Thursday 11 April, 1.00-2.00pm, Leeds Central Library

The way we get rid of our rubbish is an important part of our history. Archaeologists use things that were discarded to understand past cultures, while social scientists have tried to understand behaviour by looking at participation in modern recycling schemes. This conversation explores the history of Leeds through five different examples of waste disposal, starting with the unhygienic ash pits of the mid-nineteenth century.

Free talk, book here

Micah's Code Club Story

Micah

This is Micah. He attends a regular Code Club that we run at the Compton Centre Community Hub & Library. He loves it, and it's given him the confidence to try new things and join other groups. Micah and his mum tell us how coming to Code Club has helped them in this short video and blog post

We have free Code Clubs at Leeds Central Library, Compton, Pudsey, Bramley, Wetherby, Rothwell and Beeston Community Hubs & Libraries. Children aged 8-12 learn to code by making games, robots, animations and websites in a supportive, friendly environment.

Read Easy course

Recently we hosted Read Easy Leeds coaches for a Dyslexia Awareness session at our Central Library. They completed dyslexia simulation activities to help them understand how exhausting it can be learning to read with dyslexia. Research suggests more than 15% of UK adults suffer from dyslexia and many will not have received help at school, leaving some struggling to access qualifications and employment.

"Many readers come to us having never had a diagnosis for dyslexia but showing dyslexic traits when trying to read. A formal diagnosis can be costly, but by making our coaches more aware of how to pace learning and use a dyslexia friendly approach, we can make great progress and help readers dispel beliefs that they can never improve.

Too often, when I first enrol new readers, they tell me they are 'stupid' or 'just daft'. So, it's wonderful to visit with them after they begin their Read Easy, 1-2-1 coaching sessions to witness their growing confidence and self-esteem.”

Coaches focused on multi-sensory approaches and shared resources and ideas while celebrating successes. Jenny shared that her reader Phillip told her, "When I come to my reading session, I feel cared for."

If you would like to help an adult to learn to read or know someone who needs help, visit Read Easy or call Joanne on 0775922013, or Charlotte on 07796781471.

What's happening in our community libraries?

Rothwell Seed LibraryRothwell Community Hub & Library is trialling a new seed library created by community organisation Incredible Edible, which aims to encourage people in Leeds to grow their own food.

What is a seed library? It's a place where people can collect and drop off seeds to grow their own plants. Simply take what you need, and leave any surplus.

The seed library is the first of its kind in Leeds, made for Leeds Libraries by Incredible Edible, and we look forward to seeing what everyone thinks!

World Book Day at Compton

As part of this year's World Book Day celebrations, the Compton Centre Community Hub and Library is one of 20 libraries across the country acting as a book token exchange hub, where children can exchange their World Book Day tokens for a free book. To promote this, Compton organised a day of events and activities on Saturday 9 March.

We ran a World Book Day themed Lego Spike event, where children could unleash their design skills in building and coding book-sorters to give them ideas for their next reading choices. Illustrator Steve Webb ran an interactive illustration workshop based on his new graphic novel Peng and Spanners

We loved seeing families visiting the library for the first time, and joining as new members. The children’s library was full, busy and vibrant all day, with armfuls of library books borrowed.

World Book Day at SLS

Our brilliant team at the School Library Service arranged an inspiring programme of author events at local schools for World Book Day.

Over 6,000 children received a visit from an author, and they had a fantastic time, as you can see!

Home/Lands Chronicles community music project

Come for as long as you like, no need to book and there's no musical experience needed! All are welcome, under 12s must be accompanied by an adult.

Join Danielle Lovett in a relaxed workshop to craft a stunning textile landscape wall hanging for the upcoming Hebden Bridge Arts' 2024 open exhibitions! Dive into the world of dry felting alongside fellow enthusiasts, as you each contribute to a magnificent collaborative artwork. Select your portion of the landscape and let your creativity flow, shaping coloured wool to capture the essence of nature's beauty. Following the workshop, all crafted sections will be seamlessly joined together to form a breathtaking masterpiece.

Danielle Lovett is a local artist living in Hebden Bridge. She works with community outreach projects and organisations teaching the arts, screen-printing, mark making and more!
