Dave has written 1 short story for Listening to Frogs, which now has 18/19 stories in total, a Billericay nonsense poem and done research into his WIP Done to Death.(Barbara missed this section as she arrived afterwards).
CW comps/workshops/events: York Literature Festival, Retreat West monthly micro competition on the theme of LIE, 150 words, Huddersfield Literature Festival 11-28 April, Ann Chilvers writing events# Magma Poetry Pamphlet competition Magma open poetry pamphlet competition 2024 - Magma Poetry and holistic writing class for women* https://nadiacolburn.com/free-holistic-writing-class/ Only Poems magazine 31 May deadline, 3 May Candlestick butterfly poems and Driftwood 15 July $25 fee (Molly has details on the last three competitions)
Writing plans: Dave intends to research more on Done to Death. Molly will write a butterfly poem and take part in a live poetry evening online, attend the Nabeela Ahmed course, Spring Write with Beth Kempton and will send details of the Apples and Snakes Uni Tutor course on 24th and 1st. Kathy hopes to write another poem and look at book puppet. Karen hopes to write a butterfly poem and undertake more editing. (Barbara missed this section due to arriving afterwards).
Feedback sessions: Kathy shared her excellent poem written for a work colleague, a female engineering manager who was retiring. The poem had brilliant humour and felt a bit like a limerick. Kathy also read a section from her WIP Book Puppet which was well received and members felt it was a "drip-feeder" novel (in terms of hints to who done it), it featured elements of a local tea room CWG used to do writing sessions in and an extra comedic nod with the name of the cat. A discussion took place about the novel's concept and characters. We look forward to hearing more at the next meeting. Dave shared an Ian Drury inspired nonsense poem about Billericay which was very humourous, and a short story from his Listening to Frogs collection on the etiquette of the french market. It was like a slice of time and it was suggested that the senses could be added, especially as there would be some great opportunities to use smell to evoke a sense of being there. Dave hopes for 23/24 short stories in total at approximately 2k words each. Barbara shared an excellent short story about new beginnings for a character who was starting a new job, and new life, after separation. It was a beautiful piece that showed hope for life after betrayal and there was a poignant section at the end that when the MC had her shining moment, there was a couple there to witness it.
The next meeting will take place on Monday 13 May, 5.30pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.
