Dear Reader,

Whether you were team Posh, Scary, Ginger, Sporty or Baby, there was no denying that the Spice Girls defined an era. Despite being the same age as them when they had their first hit, Wannabe, I still (semi-secretly) loved them. Straitjacketed as I perhaps was in academic rigour, being a pop star seemed as distant as Mars (plus I can’t sing anyway), so these five mouthy girls were a breath of fresh air. Now? Well, one of them, Geri Halliwell-Horner, is on our cover this month – she’s 51 and smashing it as a bestselling author. As she tells us, the words were always more important to her than the music. To find out more, buy our latest issue which is out now.

Plus don't forget to enter our Christmas hamper competition. The prizes are incredible!

Have a great week.

WHAT’S EXCITING ME THIS WEEK

Lenny immortalised over and over again

Speaking of legends, Lenny Henry was the live subject for the 10th anniversary of Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year and smashed the Guinness World Record for the most people painting online and in a single venue simultaneously. Go, Lenny.

TV dinners

Or rather places that you can actually eat at that feature in our favourite shows. From Sex and the City’s Magnolia Bakery on New York’s Bleecker Street to Ted Lasso’s The Crown and Anchor (really called The Prince’s Head), in Richmond, we go dining in the footsteps of our favourite characters.

Cheese, please

I love cheese. It’s the one food item I couldn’t forgo (ok, apart from chocolate). Soft, strong, blue or stinky, I’m game for them all, so bravo to Sinodun Hill by Norton and Yarrow Cheese which has just been named the Best British Cheese in the recent World Cheese Awards. See more recommendations here.

FIVE THINGS NOT TO MISS

There are still some tickets available for the fireworks at Battersea Park tonight – complete with food stalls and mulled wine. 5 November

Staying in? Check out our new culture radar, where we’ll bring you a whole host of suggestions for things to read, watch and listen to each week.

Arriving in Shoreditch this week is Pearly Queen, a new fish restaurant from Cornerstone chef Tom Brown.

Tuck into some fondue in an igloo by the river at Fire & Fromage, Jimmy Garcia's pop-up which has returned to the Southbank.

Marylebone is getting its Christmas makeover this week, with a light display made from recycled plastic bottles.

Andrew Molyneux, Founding Director of TM Lighting

§ Favourite British brand? Cox London, because the team designs and makes everything in-house in the UK. They have a real passion and respect for artisanship and craft skills and make from their on-site forge. The founders have defined an original aesthetic in a market that can have a tendency to follow trends.

§ Hero? David Niven - the ultimate gentleman of his time. He exuded sartorial elegance, he had a comedic charm about him that I have always admired. He was always cool under fire.

§ Weekend? The glorious south coast (Devon and Dorset especially) has no end of coastal walks rich in flora and fauna. But if the tide was favourable I’d opt for a sail in the Salcombe estuary or the Solent anytime. Being on the water brings me a great sense of peace.

§ Meal? I’m a big believer in eating as locally as possible and seasonally. It’s good for the environment, and tasty, fresh seasonal produce is something to look forward to. Fresh asparagus, with a little melted butter, is real treat at springtime. In the summer, farm-sourced chunky beef steak on the BBQ for 20 minutes – blood rare in the centre – is my idea of heaven.

§ Shop? Mulberry, for its quality, sustainability design and because it was founded by Roger Saul, near my childhood home in Somerset.

§ Undiscovered gem? Symbolic & Chase.

§ Idiosyncrasy? The humble brag!

§ Band? I enjoy downtempo and alternative music and I particularly love the sound of London-based The Cinematic Orchestra – a blend of traditional orchestral with jazz and new sounds.

§ Car? Jaguar XK150 soft top, which is a classic car made in the 1950s. I love its form, its romance and mechanics.

§ Book? The Henry Porter books – pacy espionage novels. I love problem-solving and they are gripping stories, a great escape from the day to day.

Spotlight on Seaton

Nestled just west of the Axe Estuary, the sought-after coastal retreat of Seaton graces the stunning and untouched landscape of East Devon. The town boasts a sprawling mile-long shingle beach, offering an ideal setting for an array of watersports, including swimming, sailing, diving, and windsurfing.

A mere 10-minute stroll to the east leads to the charming ancient harbour of Axmouth, while the quaint village of Axmouth itself rests approximately a kilometer inland. Seaton serves as an excellent starting point for those eager to explore the nearby wonders of the Undercliffs Reserve.

Geology enthusiasts will find Seaton to be a special haven, as it stands as the sole town along the Jurassic Coast where rocks from all three geological periods of the World Heritage Site – Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous – can be marvelously observed in their natural habitat.
