Book Review: The Summer Switch-Off by Beth Reekles

Luna, Rory and Jodie are supposed to be having the time of their lives. Instead, they're all completely miserable.

Luna thought her first year at uni was perfect - but in reality, she's never felt so lonely.

Rory's passion is art (and promoting it on her social media), but she's signed up to study law to please her family.

And as for Jodie - she's put her all into getting top grades, but she can't remember the last time she had a night out - or a date.

In desperate need of an escape, the girls book themselves on a solo travellers holiday. But the idyllic resort of Casa Dorada is actually a digital detox retreat - which means NO PHONES! And that's not even the biggest surprise waiting for them...

Will it be a summer the girls will never forget - or one they'd rather not remember?

A sweet, funny, relatable coming-of-age story from the global-bestselling author of The Kissing Booth - perfect for fans of Beth O'Leary and Emily Henry.

The Summer Switch-Off was a warm story of friendship set in the sunny climate of Spain. Luna, Rory and Jodie all arrive at the digital detox resort with different reasons to want to relax. None of them want to give up their phones or other electronics...thank goodness for Luna who thought to pack lots of actual books.

Thrust together, the girls make an unlikely friendship group and their willingness to be open with each other (perhaps the cocktails made by the hot beach bartender Gabriel might help with that) means they are a force to be reckoned with at overcoming their individual anxieties together.

With bags of heart and humour, and a dash of holiday romance, this is the perfect recipe for escape.

5/5

N.B.

As a big fan of Beth Reekles (I may have read ALL of her novels except Sincerely Yours, Anna Sherwood - it's on my December birthday/Christmas list), I also follow her on Instagram and she has posted a lovely video today of her signing copies of The Summer Switch-Off at The Works in York, so if you hurry, you might be one of the lucky ones who purchases a signed edition. Plus, it is on special offer at just £3 a copy.

I'm still hoping she comes to my local The Works Store in Batley, just down the road from the new Neptune Outlet, so I can grab a signed copy...or I may have to take a trip to York.

In the mood for more summer romance? How about One Summer in Sicily by Nancy Barone, the next book I will be reviewing.

Or if you are in the mood for a sweet Christmas romance, how about my current read, The Gingerbread Café by Anita Faulkner.

Or if you fancy a Christmas romance which still brings the heat (not just because part of the novel is set in Capri), you might want to try my debut novel Christmas Evie which is available on all e readers now:
