This, thought provoking and wordless show is perfect for adults and children aged 7+ and audiences with limited English or English as a second language.

An exciting but dangerous adventure set in a verdant valley ringed by mountains that protect it from the outside world. In this rich and beautiful land, a young orphaned child is reluctantly taught their hunting duties by their older sibling, but in this land where Dragons are real they will soon learn of the dark magical cycle at the heart of their world and what the true price of living in paradise is.

Dragon has been created by Life and Limb Puppets, a co-founder of Newcastle’s Moving Parts Puppetry Festival. The production has been supported by Horse and Bamboo, Alphabetti Theatre and the Curious School of Puppetry. Dragon has been created using funding by Arts Council England and Newcastle City Council Community Foundation.

Dragon is a visual stunning, fantasy genre puppetry show for families and children aged 7+, taking audiences on an exhilarating 70 min adventure, mixing cutting edge projection and digital animation with beautiful live puppetry, performed by a cast of 3 to a soaring original score.

Tales of the Weird with Reece Shearsmith

Tuesday 14 November, 7.00pm, Leeds Central Library - livestreamed directly from the British Library in London

The British Library’s hugely popular Tales of The Weird series unearths and re-publishes strange and uncanny stories from its collections. 

This affectionate celebration of weird writing, hosted by author and broadcaster Matthew Sweet, features two of our finest writers of the strange, including Reece Shearsmith (League of Gentlemen, Inside No. 9), discussing the ways that the weird and uncanny influence their work. Book here.

Fantasy: A Glimpse into Other Worlds

Wednesday 6 December, 6.30pm, Leeds Central Library

Glimpse is the first speculative fiction anthology of Black British writers which includes stories of Afrofuturism, magic realism, and transformation. Glimpse editor, Leone Ross, will be in conversation with writers Akila Richards, Nii Parkes and Pete Kalu, about their re-imaginings, other worlds, and how they create the unexpected. Book here.

Visit Leeds Central Library in the next few months and you'll find it's been transforming into a magical place. We even have a couple of dragons!

 


 

Zine badgeLeeds Zine Library Party!

Wednesday 8 November, 5.30-8.00pm, Leeds Central Library

The Leeds Zine Library has had a bit of a glow up and it will soon make its home in the Art Library. We have lots of new zines to share and we'd love your zine donations too!

Zine talkScience Fiction, Fantasy and the origins of Zines

Thursday 16 November, 5.30-7.00pm, Leeds Central Library

What do Superman, Mr. Spock, and the Third Law of Robotics have to do with the history of Zines? With their origins as fanzines, science fiction and zinedom have gone hand in hand. From the Soviet Union to San Francisco, amazing stories of distant planets and philosophical robots have been told through folded paper. 

Find out about the history of one of the world's most subversive art forms, and how it links with some of the most fantastic stories ever told. Book here.

Leeds Book Awards 2023

Leeds Book Awards 2023Our re-launched Leeds Book Awards ceremony was held on the evening of Thursday 26 October. School children from across Leeds voted for their favourite book from shortlists in different age categories. The shortlisted authors and children were invited to the special ceremony at Elland Road, giving children the opportunity to meet some of the authors, dress to impress and enjoy a fab photo booth.

The awards were presented by children and they had the chance to hear their own voices reading extracts from the nominated books. Everyone had a fantastic time!

 


 

Art DoctorsFun creative activities for grown-ups!

Our librarians have been working on some fantastic new activities that will help you explore how to get started on something creative, overcome any fears, find inspiration in the everyday, and have bit of a giggle.

And, just in case you were wondering, you really DON’T need to be able to draw, paint, dance, write or play music to be creative… this is for everyone. 

We'll let you know through our social media channels when we're ready to go!

 


 

BitBotsWe are looking forward to supporting the Otley Science Festival on Saturday 18 November.

Drop in to Otley Community Hub & Library from 10.00am-12noon or 1.00-3.00pm to have a go at some Lego STEM bridge building or experience VR!

We'll also have a stall at Otley Courthouse all day, showing some of the robots that we use at our Code Clubs.

Hi ,

You're invited to the world premiere of Four Seasons of the Caribbean, which takes over the Riley Theatre for the last weekend of November. Commissioned by Leeds International Concert Season in partnership with Riley Theatre and Northern School of Contemporary Dance, this brand-new work fuses together traditional and modern sound worlds to celebrate Black British composers’ legacy and descendants of the Windrush generation.

Also taking place in November is a captivating piano recital from Ingrid Fliter, brilliantly brassy tunes from Fairey Band, and a delightful flute, viola and harp programme as part of French Connections, the 2023/24 Leeds International Chamber Season.

Antonio Vivaldi's world-famous The Four Seasons is reimagined under a Caribbean lens by composers Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Cassie Kinoshi, Philip Herbert, and Renell Shaw (pictured). Four Seasons of the Caribbean is an exciting fusion of sound worlds, featuring violinist Ellinor D'Melon, steel pan player Leon Foster Thomas, and the outstanding Manchester Camerata orchestra.

Get ready to decorate gingerbread people and sing the odd carol with Mrs Claus before heading to the enchanted Elf Village where you can keep toasty warm with a hot drink whilst little ones decorate Christmas ceramics and make their very own reindeer food.

Ice Cube at Christmas

Embrace the magic of the festive season with the return of Ice Cube at Christmas on Millennium Square, Victoria Gardens and Cookridge Street from 24 November. With an array of exciting winter-themed activities and attractions including the ever-popular outdoor ice rink, charming Bavarian-style market food stalls, the alpine-inspired Ski Bar and a winter-themed funfair, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

Tickets are now on sale for the ice rink which once again offers daily skating sessions, a Penguin Club for younger families, skating lessons and accessible sessions.

Tom Grennan, Suede and Manic Street Preachers, Busted with special guests Scouting For Girls, and Yard Act are the first headliners to be confirmed for next year's Summer Series. The square will once again be transformed into a vibrant concert arena next summer, welcoming some of rock, indie and pop's most prominent bands to the heart of Leeds City Centre. Our Autumn Sessions continue with Mestisa Duo on Saturday 4th November 4-6pm with original and traditional songs of South America from Ana Luisa & Barbara. Expect beautiful blended harmonies, passionate performance, rhythmical guitars and a journey across North, Central and South America. PWYF Seven Bar.

Also, on Saturday 4th November, Alba – Film Premiere.Two old friends rekindle a once unrequited love. In the course of one rare, intimate and magical night, a life entire is remembered and lived. It is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.
