PRE-CODE HOLLYWOOD: RULES ARE MADE TO BE BROKEN

Pre-Code Hollywood

The moral backbone and happy ending of the Hollywood movie has been universally-received wisdom for decades. But before the censors came along and introduced the Hays Code guidelines in 1934, there were a few years where thrillingly edgy and risqué flicks, starring the likes of Clark Gable, James Cagney and Norma Shearer as greedy criminals and promiscuous libertines, were the talk of the town.

In this new touring season of five restored films, Pre-Code Hollywood: Rules are Made to be Broken, experience the wild, dangerous period of the early '30s; when crime did pay, the bad guy got the girl in the end, and you really could get away with murder.

We're pleased to present the films in this season at a discounted ticket price. And if you can't get enough of that artwork, follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram – there'll be posters and free tickets to be won.

FIND OUT MORE

We ride at dawn

Dawn. The Southbank Centre. Next Sunday. An elated, exhausted crowd will trickle out of Concrete Lates, where Fabio & Grooverider have been pumping drum and bass through the night.

Only a few hours later, a fresh and eager crowd will turn out for something extremely different: reverent classical music at sunrise, the start of a day dedicated to Biber's Rosary Sonatas

As ever, a weekend at the Southbank Centre could go any way you choose (please, if you have the stamina, do both). Choose to do nothing this week? Try our blog for some light reading. Discover this year's Imagine Children's Festival, artist Conrad Shawcross and personal memories evoked by the Royal Festival Hall organ.

Memories of the Royal Festival Hall organ

Our organ has not only produced some fantastic concerts over the years, but is also responsible for comfort at a time of crisis, for some hasty school exits, for a chocolate box bribe, and also for at least one marriage.
