From Novels to the Big Screen

Travelling through Ireland sometimes feels like visiting another
world. So fantastical is Ireland that it has inspired countless
stories, from folklore to fantasy novels and TV shows.
Game of Thrones has filmed countless scenes here, from castles to
caves to cliffs all over Northern Ireland. CS Lewis, author of
childhood classic The Chronicles of Narnia, grew up near Belfast with
the Causeway Coast and the Mourne Mountains his playground - and he
has said that he was inspired by all he saw to create the world of
Narnia. JRR Tolkien is said to have been inspired by visits to
Ireland, particularly the desolate lunar Burren landscape of County
Clare, while writing the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s said too
that the name for Gollum came from his visit to Pollnagollum cave,
which made a strange noise that resembles the character’s signature
sound.
Zipping into the world of scifi, Star Wars has commandeered the
Skellig Islands and rural parts of Kerry, Clare and Donegal to film
iconic Star Wars scenes (notably, Luke’s world’s-end hideout).
The island also has a rich quiltwork of folklore and mythology, from
warring giants to mermaids and selkies, humans turned to swans,
fairies from the other world, tragic lovers chased across the island
and battles fought over magical bulls.
Let Ireland inspire you….
