The American (Arts) Rescue Plan

The National Endowments for the Humanities and Arts have each received $135 million in new funding to help arts organizations, courtesy of the American Rescue Plan. The plan also sends $200 million in much needed pandemic relief to libraries, many of which have, the AP reports, become hybrid healthcare hubs over the past year. In awards news, the Lambda Literary Awards finalists for 2021 have been announced. The New Yorker has highlighted how the Raven Book Shop is waging war against Amazon. And we spoke with André Aciman about his latest book of essays.

Some Much-Needed Money

As part of the American Rescue Plan signed by President Biden last night, the National Endowment for the Arts will get $135 million to distribute to suffering arts institutions. At Regnery, revenue fell last year despite a strong Q4, while the book promoters at A Mighty Blaze are keeping the business growing after a big year. A virtual mini-conference on Latinx children’s literature held on March 6 highlighted Mexican American themes and the importance of representation. The Guardian looks at the plight of Amazon's overworked delivery drivers. In Literary Hub, the owner of Magic City Books in Tulsa, Okla., explains how he planned the store's first virtual event in only a few hours a year ago today. And early-bird registration for the U.S. Book Show is now open!

One Book, Two Book, Old Book, Sold Book

After much bellyaching over the "cancellation" of Dr. Seuss, a stratospheric increase in sales of his best-known (and decidedly not canceled) books drove print book sales up by more than a third. In Maryland, libraries will soon be allowed to license digital content that is available to consumers as New York and Rhode Island consider similar laws. In California, booksellers at Moe's Bookstore have unionized, while Green Apple Books prepares to downsize. The personnel carousel continues to spin at IDW, picking up three new riders in big roles. Amazon, seeking even higher profits, refuses to stock its e-books in libraries, reports the Washington Post. The New York Times looks into celebrities and why they keep launching book clubs these days. And a limited-series adaptation of Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon is in the works.

The Last Adventure of Norton and Milo

"Expect everything, I always say, and the unexpected never happens," the maverick author Norton Juster, quoting himself, told his old friend Milo. "But your death was unexpected," the boy replied sadly. "Well, then," Juster smiled, "you probably should have expected it." So Milo pressed on, paying a visit to the pressed presses of the Midwest and his fellow children in Africa, now learning from a distance. He even listened to a book along the way. "Things sure have changed," Milo thought to himself. "I wonder what the Whether Man would have had to say about it."

Two Kinds of Falls

Following allegations of poor business practices and discrimination at Small Press Distribution, an internal investigation has led to the resignation of its executive director, Brent Cunningham. At Barnes & Noble Education, the pandemic continues to rough up finances, with the company reporting an 18.1% drop in sales last quarter. Scribd has launched a new audio division, bringing on multihyphenate talents Daveed Diggs and Lena Waithe to narrate its lead title. The Los Angeles Times spotlights attempts to smuggle books past Iran's censors, while the New Yorker unpacks how Octavia Butler reimagined sex and survival in her novels. And the Baffler examines George Saunders and the priesthood of the short story.

Who's Flying to Frankfurt?

As vaccines slowly become more available, more businesses are beginning to plan for in-person events later this year, including the Frankfurt Book Fair, which has pledged a hybrid show this year. Pearson, now divested entirely from trade publishing, is ready for its future as a learning company, its CEO said. Sourcebooks has announced a new E.L. James book, a week after James joined the publisher at a new imprint, Bloom Books. Chicago Public Schools have suspended their partnership with Young Chicago Authors, according to the Sun-Times. And Deadline reports that Armando Lucas Correa's The German Girl will be adapted for TV.

The Independent Book Publishers Association has taken its podcast to a new channel: video. Released on February 25, the episode “How Independent Publishers Can Support DEI and Be Antiracist,” was a conversation between April Powers, chief equity and inclusion officer of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and Christopher Locke, IBPA’s member liaison. The 45-minute discussion covers #OwnVoices and lived experience, how to bring real change to marginalized communities, “political” vs. “politicized,” and what independent publishers can learn from the “American Dirt” controversy.

Kid Lit Fights Anti-Asian Racism

The number of racist actions taken against Asian Americans continues to rise in the U.S., and a group of children's authors is determined to fight back. Earlier this week, Avid Reader published Patricia Engel's Infinite Country—a novel with a particularly powerful pre-publication story. In trade show news, the fate of this year's London Book Fair remains uncertain, and the Jaipur Literature Festival had a big virtual year. After 80 years, Archie Comics continues to expand its brand and reach. In music book news, BBC reports that Mariah Carey's brother has sued over emotional distress caused by her memoir, and the Wu-Tang Clan will publish a photo book encased in a 400-pound chamber, according to Rolling Stone. Plus, the New York Times spotlights artists working to dismantle the barriers between the rap and poetry worlds. And Uniqlo and Haruki Murakami have teamed up on a t-shirt line.

Boffo Backlist Buying Buoys Book Biz

Backbone of the business, indeed: another week of good print book sales, another week of sales driven by the mighty backlist. Over at Penguin Random House, thar she blows—but please, not loud enough to cause the microphone to pop from all the plosives—as a new voiceover casting program, Ahab, gets its worldwide debut. At John Wiley, revenue saw a 3% rise in Q3. The New York Times has aptly summed up the past few days of Dr. Seuss discourse. And at the Paris Review, the Times also reports, editor Emily Nemens has ended her three-year tenure a week after online editor Nadja Spiegelman's imminent departure from the publication was announced.

What's Up with Comic-Con?

Much like other major events companies, Comic-Con International is trying to bring back its big shows this year, but for now, it will split the difference: WonderCon and San Diego Comic-Con are staying virtual, but the company is hoping to launch a new in-person event in November. Columbia and Howard Universities have teamed up on a new Black studies book series and attendant diversity program, the institutions have announced, in an effort to train a new generation of book business workers. Random House Studio, a new imprint of Random House Children's Books, has named the titles on its inaugural list. And our latest Backlist Backbones feature proves everything old is new again. Irish author Edna O'Brien will receive France's highest honor for the arts, reports the Guardian. And six Dr. Seuss books will no longer be published due to racist imagery, the AP reports.

The Plight of Romance Authors of Color

Owners of the Ripped Bodice bookstore in Los Angeles conducted their fifth annual survey of the state of romance publishing and once again found a serious lack of diversity among the books and authors published last year. In New York City, booksellers protested at the Strand, objecting to what they see as ongoing efforts by the owner, Nancy Bass Wyden, to bust the store’s union. The finalists for the PEN/Faulkner Awards have been named; the winner, to be announced on May 10, will receive $15,000. Speaking of cash, Bookshop.org earned £1 million for independent bookstores in its first four months in business in the U.K., writes the Bookseller. Finally, Literary Hub explains the controversy that erupted when Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, the Dutch writer who won the International Booker Prize in 2020, and who is white, was chosen to translate Amanda Gorman’s poetry in the Netherlands.

Publishing for Women by Women

Sourcebooks is launching a new, as-yet-unnamed imprint to “expand what publishing can be for women authors” and will take over publishing the work of E.L. James of Fifty Shades of Grey fame. In Minneapolis, Yuka Igarashi is joining Greywolf as its first executive editor, coming over from Soft Skull Press. Publishers and booksellers were largely pleased with this year’s virtual Winter Institute, with many praising the poetry interludes. In the U.K., the Bookseller magazine will have its first-ever guest editor when Marianne Tatepo, the founder of the Black Agents & Editors' Group, takes over for the April 9 issue. Finally, on Sunday night, CBS’s 60 Minutes gave some rare airtime to an author, profiling author Colson Whitehead ahead of the release of the streaming series adaptation of his novel The Underground Railroad on May 14.
