"Often your leading character is the audience. It’s a vessel through which the audience can put themselves in the story and see what’s happening.”

Eli Attie (The West Wing).

Seeing the world through the eyes of your protagonist is a great advantage for a screenwriter. But what if you want to write a fiction podcast? How do you adapt this skill when it comes to writing an audio-drama? Simple, think of yourself listening to the world through the ears of your protagonist.

Writing a fiction podcast and writing a screenplay is not that different. If you have a story that's rich in a sense of place, containing characters with strong dialogue, then adapting your script into a podcast can be really simple.

In part one of this Guide to Adapting your Script Into a Podcast, we look at how to assess your story's potential for becoming the next great audio drama. With 100million people listening to podcasts in the US alone, fiction podcasts can gain a global following and launch your career as a writer.

THE FIRST 5 STEPS TO ADAPT YOUR SCRIPT

  1. Do Your Research - read as many podcast scripts as you can and become familiar with the medium. We've put together a unique collection of our Judges' podcast scripts to help you do just that. Read more...
  2. Learn From Others - revisit a podcast that has been successfully adapted for the screen. HOMECOMING is a great example. Here are some links so you can read the script and listen to the teaser trailer for the original podcast. Now watch the teaser trailer for the Amazon Prime series and ask yourself, what are the commonalities and differences between them?
  3. Consider Your Narrative Techniques - brush up on familiar oral devices that can help frame your story - Voice Over, News Reports, Telephone Calls, Diary Entries. And re-write scenes that rely heavily on visual clues such as Flashbacks and Fantasy sequences.
  4. Polish Your Presentation - don't be scared to write your story your way. Many podcast writers use a standard screenplay format to tell their stories. But as of yet, no-one seems to have a monopoly on the definition of what your script should look like. The most important thing to remember is that we can clearly hear your story when we read your script.
  5. Make It Episodic. Not every episode has to be exactly the same length, but a consistent average is still desirable. If you used the traditional three-act structure to write your screenplay, you should be able to use your story beats and turning points to create natural 'end of episode' hooks.
