June's Reading Matters conference in Bradford will concentrate on closing the literacy gap, details below:

Learn strategies to help you 'Close the Literacy Gap' at our conference in June

This year we're dedicating our June conference to 'Closing the Literacy Gap' and have a put together a wonderful line-up of expert speakers who will be sharing their strategies to help you achieve the best outcomes for all the children and young people you support, regardless of their starting points in life.
The conference will be packed full of valuable CPD content for senior leaders, teachers, TAs, literacy advisors, librarians and anyone else involved in supporting children’s literacy development across the key stages.
Our keynote speakers are Education Consultant and Writer Matt Bromley, award-winning author Andy Seed, Dr Paula Clarke of the University of Leeds, Deborah Bullivant , Director of Grimm & Co and Rachel Van Riel of Opening the Book.

The conference is being held at Bradford City Football Stadium on Thursday the 29th of June from 9am till 3.30pm. There will be a choice of workshops, exhibition stands and plenty of opportunities for professional networking throughout the day.

Comments from attendees of our last conference include, "That's the best conference I've ever attended! I'm leaving with so many new ideas that I can take back to school" and "A really worthwhile and interesting day".
Tickets are currently available at the ‘Early Bird’ rate of £85 until the 31/03/2017 and £100 thereafter.

Spotlight on a speaker

One of the expert speakers at our conference is Deborah Bullivant, founding director of Grimm & Co, a magical story destination based in Rotherham and part of the Ministry of Stories family.  Deborah is an educationalist and an academic who has regularly provided advice to national panels on policy making over the last 20 years.  Her experience pans school headships through to adult learning, commissioning of educational strategies and academic roles, all the while consistently championing the best educational approaches for vulnerable groups and the improvement of literacy and learning for marginalised communities. Deborah will share with us her unique insight into what works when motivating children to learn and enjoy literacy, gathered from years of experience in education and more recently as Director of the fantastical child-led learning environment of Grimm & Co.

Can you help a child with reading in Sheffield or Bradford?

data-file-id=4910649>

We are looking for dedicated and enthusiastic adult volunteers to support children with reading in schools in Sheffield and Bradford. The areas in Sheffield where we specifically need help are S12, S5 and S2.

Being a Reading Mentor is an extremely worthwhile and rewarding experience. On average, a Reading Mentor is able to increase a child's reading age by 15 months after just 10 hours of support and often by a lot more.

If you are free for a few hours each week and would like to dedicate them to giving children the best chances in life, then please contact us at info@readingmatters.org.uk or telephone 01274 692219.

Happy Reading!
