Penelope Fitzgerald: a celebration

On the centenary of the novelist Penelope Fitzgerald’s birth, biographer Professor Dame Hermione Lee, novelist Michèle Roberts and publisher Stuart Proffitt will discuss her life and work. With readings by actor Diana Quick.
 
Penelope Fitzgerald was a novelist, biographer, and essayist, and one of the most distinctive voices in British fiction. Three of her novels, The Bookshop, The Beginning of Spring and The Gate of Angels were shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and she won the Prize in 1979 for Offshore. Her last novel, The Blue Flower, was chosen no fewer than 19 times in the press as the Book of the Year in 1995. It won America’s National Book Critics’ Circle Award. In 1999 Fitzgerald was awarded the Golden PEN Award by English PEN for a Lifetime’s Distinguished Service to Literature.
 
 
This event immediately follows the English PEN Annual General Meeting, which takes place from 4pm to 6pm, also at the Free Word Centre.
