Thor The Dark World movie review

Thor: The Dark World (2013) Poster

Went to see this movie last night with the family and our good friends C, M and H and what an excellent film it was.

IMDB describes the premise as: Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Marvel have found a winning formula by adding humour and nods to the franchise in their superhero fantasy movies and long may it continue.

Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) directs and in some moments you can tell, but not in a bad way, as a fan of both, I love the similarities.  Chris Hemsworth (Rush, Snow White and the Huntsman) reprises his role as Thor, the God of Thunder and Natalie Portman (Black Swan, V for Vendetta) as Jane Porter and they have added to the characters and grown the laughs from their relationship dynamic, but for me the film is stolen by the fantastic Tom Hiddleston (War Horse, Avengers Assemble) as complicated step-brother Loki.  The chemistry between Hiddleston and Hemsworth is fantastic.  Hiddleston's one-liners in the movie notch it up from the first film, and for my money, I would say this sequel out performs the original.

Sir Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Red 2) reprises his role as Odin, Rene Russo (The Thomas Crown Affair, Outbreak) as Frigga and the powerful screen presence of Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Prometheus) as Heimdall.  Thor's Asgard fighting buddies are back: Jaimie Alexander (The Last Stand, Rest Stop) as Sif, Ray Stevenson (The Book of Eli, The Three Muskateers) as Volstagg ans Tadanobu Asano (Ichi The Killer, Battleship) as Hogun but I did notice that Zachary Levi (Chuck, Tangled) has replaced Josh Dallas as Fandral.

Christopher Eccleston (Dr Who, The Others) is barely recognisable as Malakith the big bad in this movie but his scenes do add to the 'Shakespeare in the Park' feel.  The comedic timing genius Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Mamma Mia!) is back as Erik Selvig, as is Kat Jennings (2 Broke Girls, The 40-year-old Virgin) as Darcy Lewis, though her sarcasm does get a bit grinding and thankfully Jonathon Howard (World War Z, Dream Team) as Ian the intern lends welcome light relief in most of her scenes.

Make sure you stay until the end credits as there are two extra scenes, one featuring Benico Del Toro and I am sure fans of the franchise will enjoy the cameo mid-film.

I can safely say that this is my favourite of the franchise so far and I feel that the film is a wonderful testament to the talent of writer Don Payne (who also penned Thor) who sadly died of bone cancer before the film was released.

There has also been confirmation that there will be a crossover episode on Marvel's Agents of Shield, so I am looking forward to that, sadly it will not feature Loki or Thor.
