Cleckheaton Writers Group 11 November 2013

Another good meeting of the group last night where P, J, D and I were in attendance, L having passed on her apologies.

P started by informing us of the Novel Navigator article in the Writing Magazine December issue under the Technology for Writers section.  She also mentioned that the last edition had a pull-out poster for help with NaNoWriMo.  P recommended Writing Magazine as it was only £9.99 a quarter and she felt it was better than the Writers Forum for the money.  P also shared the Competitions 2014 pull-out that featured upcoming competitions until June next year.

D told us that sadly she had received another agent rejection, but that she had sent her manuscript out to a couple more agents, so fingers crossed.

J said that he had an idea of writing short stories that are inspired by quotes, e.g. 'Three men may keep a secret if two of them are dead' Benjamin Franklin.  We all agreed it was an excellent idea and decided that this would be our next Writing Group challenge.

D recommended the writing book 'Writing Down the Bones - Freeing the Writer Within' by Natalie Goldberg which was written in the 80s and was still in print.

P then shared her first lines that she has been working on and titles for books.  There were several that the group thought had legs and she admitted that she had written three chapters featuring a character named Bickerman.  She agreed to forward the three chapters to the Group.

I informed the group that David Suchet was coming to Harrogate on the 10th of December to promote his new book 'Poirot and Me' and that tickets were £18 each.  I will be attending this event and the Gervase Phinn author talk at Cleckheaton Town Hall on Wednesday evening that L will also be attending.  Tickets are £3 and the event starts at 7.30pm.

I also told the group that I would be attending the free meeting in Huddersfield this evening about the upcoming Literature Festival.

N discussed the two pieces of writing that he was thinking of sending to the R&J competition and the group agreed that we would love to hear his 'vampire' piece as we had already seen his sci-fi manuscript TWH.  Neil agreed to share this with the group.

J then shared with the group a couple of flash fiction stories, the first one entitled Wise and Curious featuring a lecherous sofa and the second, entitled No.41 which dealt with a bus journey.  Both were excellent stories with poetic prose and he revealed that he had thought about writing several short stories about buses that he may put into a collection.  The group look forward to hearing more.

The next meeting will be on Monday 25 November 6-8pm at Cleckheaton Library.  New members always welcome.
