A MEDIEVAL BURGLARY AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY (with links to Yorkshire)

A talk by Janet Senior

Thursday September 10th 11:30 – 12:30pm

A Medieval Burglary at Westminster with links to Yorkshire!

The ruling monarchs of England lived close to Westminster Abbey in the early Middle Ages and used the Abbey for storage facilities. But the monarchs were not always in the palace and when they were away anything could happen. One of these ‘happenings’ was an audacious burglary in 1302/03. The talk will include information on the buildings, the people involved, reasons for the burglary. what happened to the perpetrators and the resulting actions of the Exchequer.

Rivers in the Sky, Talk by Alan Pearson

A talk by Alan Pearson

Thursday, 27th August 2026

11:30 -12:30 pm

Starting on Steeton Moor, on the edge of a sea of ice that stretched all the way to the North Pole, Alan's talk will follow a string of lakes and the overflow channels that connected them.

At the end of the Ice Age, huge volumes of meltwater cascaded across the hills high above the Aire Valley. This river ran for 50 kilometres alongside the ice and passed through places in Bradford where Alan grew up.

Over the last five years Alan has walked along all these ancient riverbeds and recorded in photographs the retreat of the glacier, detailing each new channel as the ice melted back.

Join him for a walk in a barren, frozen landscape when a glacier filled the Aire Valley

Bradford Local Studies Library, Tel: 01274 433688, Margaret McMillan Tower (side entrance), Princes Way, BD1 1NN

The event is free but booking is essential.

Dear Reader,

This was the summer I stopped being able to beat my children at table tennis. The dry conditions meant we could pull our ancient table that buckles in the middle out onto the parched lawn. It became the centrepiece of our days in the New Forest. Every time I wanted a work break or to get the children off their devices, I'd suggest a game – best of three. Hitherto I'd beaten them under ten, but this summer even my youngest (12) improved so vastly that his disgustingly sneaky spins would have me slamming down my bat in annoyance (like a child). It was of course inevitable and the right way of things, but still it makes me think, am I only ever going to get worse at stuff?

Staying In

WATCH: The New Novak Djokovic Documentary

Whether you root for him or whoever he’s up against (who doesn’t love the underdog?), there’s no denying Novak Djokovic’s prowling domination of the tennis court. He holds the all-time record for men's Grand Slam singles titles (24) and the record for the most weeks spent at world No. 1, after all, thanks to his unrelenting athleticism and breathtaking technical skill. But this wasn’t always in the stars for the now 39-year-old player, who was born and raised in war-torn Serbia. A new documentary on Prime Video charts this rise and Djokovic’s fierce drive to prove his doubters wrong, featuring interviews with figures like Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi and also giving a rare glimpse into his life off the court. Streaming now.

MAKE: Ramona’s Houmous & Roasted Vegetable Pasta

All houmous addicts know about Ramona’s, the cult dips brand. But did you know its red pepper houmous can be a great addition to creamy pasta sauces? Below we share a recipe made with roasted peppers, courgettes and sweet cherry tomatoes, finished with fresh parsley.

Serves: 6
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20–25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 500g dried fusilli pasta

  • 500g Ramona’s Red Pepper Heavenly Houmous

  • 3 courgettes, sliced lengthways

  • 3 green peppers, deseeded and quartered

  • 3 red peppers, deseeded and quartered

  • 300g cherry vine tomatoes

  • ¼ bunch fresh parsley, roughly chopped

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • Juice of ½ lemon

  • Pinch of salt

  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan/Gas 4). Arrange the courgettes, peppers and cherry tomatoes on a large baking tray. Drizzle with the olive oil and roast for 20–25 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and lightly caramelised.

  2. Transfer the roasted vegetables to a large bowl. Season with the salt and black pepper, then toss with the lemon juice.

  3. Meanwhile, cook the fusilli according to the packet instructions until al dente. Drain well, reserving a little of the pasta cooking water.

  4. Return the cooked pasta to the pan or a large serving bowl and stir through RAMONA'S Red Pepper Heavenly Houmous until evenly coated. Add a splash of the reserved pasta water, if needed, to create a smooth, silky sauce.

  5. Fold through the roasted vegetables and finish with the chopped parsley. Serve immediately while warm or allow to cool and enjoy as a vibrant pasta salad.

Top Tip: For an extra flavour boost, top with crumbled feta, toasted pine nuts or a generous handful of grated Parmesan before serving.

TRY: One Of These British Skincare Brands

Let’s face it, back-to-back heatwaves have done nothing but wreak havoc – on our mood, our quality of sleep, and especially our skin. And now, with cooler days ahead, it’s time to reset your skincare routine. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to wait for big-name labels to make it across the pond when it comes to skincare. From aesthetic doctor-backed labels like 111SKIN and Dr Sebagh, to organic heroes Neal’s Yard and Rhug Wild, to B Corp favourites Aurelia London and UpCircle, the UK has more than enough brilliant brands to keep your skin feeling healthy and nourished. Here’s our top pick.

Going Out

BOOK: Royal Ballet & Opera After Hours

Looking for a culture fix ahead of the weekend? There’s still time to grab tickets for the Royal Opera House’s brand new late-night experience, After Hours. A rare chance to explore the London theatre after dark, the evening combines exclusive talks, live demonstrations, activities and behind-the-scenes tours of London’s famed cultural hub. Skim along costume rails with in-house designers, test your voice with Chorus Director William Spaulding, and round the night off with a silent disco under the glass canopy of Paul Hamlyn Hall. Friday 21 August at 5.30pm, tickets are £60 (£45 for Young RBO), rbo.org.uk

EAT: A Pizza Tasting Menu

Stepping inside beloved pizzeria Napoli on the Road’s new Soho joint, with its organically curving concrete interiors and minimalist dressing, you could be forgiven for thinking something posher than pizza is about to be served. Dubbed Europe’s No.1 Pizzeria (outside of Italy) by 50 Top Pizza for three years running, founder Michele Pascarella is indeed taking pizza to lofty new heights with a first-of-its-kind pizza tasting menu. ‘We wanted to challenge the idea of what pizza can be and push it somewhere unexpected,’ he tells C&TH. ‘We love pizza, and we also love the idea of showing people another side of it, one they might not usually see. Pizza is something everyone knows and loves, often associated with something quick, casual and familiar, but there is so much craft and creativity behind it.’ Expect seven decadent courses (£60pp) with a optional wine pairing (£40pp). Book at napoliontheroad.com

VISIT: The Mulberry x Ronan Mckenzie Pop-Up

Coast, castles and countryside

Why choose between a coastal break, countryside escape or city stay when you can have all three?  A few days in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire can take you from wide-open beaches and dramatic cliffs to ancient castles, rolling countryside and some seriously good places to eat. September is a great time to explore, with quieter coastlines, plenty happening across the region and the first signs of autumn in the landscape.

A taste of the North-east

Some of the best experiences here happen around a table. Look out for fresh seafood on the coast, independent cafés and bakeries in towns and villages, local produce from farm shops and markets, and whisky and gin from the region's distilleries.

Wherever you explore, there's usually a good reason to stop for something delicious along the way.
