Hello from Leeds Town Hall!

This month, we're looking at Leeds Town Hall from past to present. As Leeds recently celebrated 400 years since receiving its Royal Charter, we're reflecting on the Town Hall's role in the city's story and highlighting some of the people and craftsmanship helping to secure its future.

Celebrating 400 years of Leeds

Last month marked an important milestone in the city's history: 400 years since Leeds received its Royal Charter from King Charles I in 1626.

As Leeds celebrates this anniversary, we're taking a moment to reflect on the city's journey and the role Leeds Town Hall has played within it. From royal visits and civic ceremonies to concerts, sporting celebrations and everyday moments, the Town Hall has stood at the heart of Leeds life for generations, providing the backdrop to celebrations, milestones and memories across the centuries.

The granting of the Royal Charter marked the beginning of Leeds' journey towards self-governance and the city we know today. Four hundred years later, Leeds is a vibrant, diverse and culturally rich city that continues to evolve and thrive.

Meet the team behind the refurbishment: David Pogson, Page\Park 

Behind every decision, detail and design update on the Leeds Town Hall refurbishment is a team of dedicated specialists working together to bring the project to life.

This month, we're introducing David Pogson, Project Architect at Page\Park Architects.

Tell us about your role David, and how you got involved in the Leeds Town Hall refurbishment.

I'm David, the Project Architect for Leeds Town Hall and have been with Page\Park for just over three years. I was brought onto the project at the end of stage four, during the technical design phase.

My role is to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the project alongside Brian, our Part 3 Architectural Assistant. We support Kier, the main contractor, coordinate with Norse Property Services (NPS) to organise design team meetings, and ensure that information flows efficiently to support the project programme. We also undertake site visits two to three times each week, alongside Peter, the Clerk of Works from NPS, to monitor the quality of the works and ensure they are being delivered in accordance with the design intent. Throughout the project, we work closely with the teams at NPS and Mason Clark Associates (MCA), maintaining a collaborative approach to help deliver this exciting, once-in-a-lifetime restoration and refurbishment project.

What does a typical day working on the refurbishment look like?

No two days are quite the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the project. Some days are filled with meetings, while others give us a chance to focus on drawing work.

Brian and I are responsible for producing the architectural drawings for the project. We coordinate with mechanical and electrical services, making sure everything works together properly and is in the right place, from plug sockets and doors to lining materials and finishes.

A big part of the job is responding to discoveries on site. Leeds Town Hall keeps us on our toes because no matter what wall you open, you find something different every time. Whether it's from the 1900s, the 1990s, or an earlier phase of the building's life, what's behind the surface is rarely exactly what you expect.

The overall design vision remains the same, but how we achieve it often changes depending on what we uncover. That's part of the challenge and part of the enjoyment. We try to keep one or two days each week free for drawing and design work, which is the fun part.

What's something you know now that you wish you'd known at the start of the project?

Lots actually! You can’t really pinpoint one, because of the nature of the project the unknown is always difficult. With historic buildings, there's only so much you can discover before construction begins. If you had unlimited time and budget, you'd strip back more of the building to better understand what's there, but eventually that investigation becomes part of the main construction works anyway.

The more time you can spend understanding how a building has been put together, the better. That's particularly true for listed and historic buildings, but it's also true of many newer buildings. Drawings don't always tell the whole story. Learning how a building has evolved over time is invaluable when you're working on a project as complex as this.

Tell us about a moment from the refurbishment that you're especially proud of.

The areas I'm most proud of are the new interventions that help open up the building, particularly along the East Corridor. Creating those substantial new openings has transformed the space. It no longer feels like a corridor that simply connects rooms; it becomes part of the destination itself and a place where people can gather.

Achieving that wasn't easy. The walls contained numerous flues and service routes running all the way from the basement, so creating those openings required significant structural engineering work.

There have been plenty of other milestone moments too: the lift installation, the completion of the lift pit, the ash flooring going down, the Leeds Ticket Hub office taking shape, the new stonework being installed, and seeing the doors and finishes arrive on site.

One standout moment was turning over the stone flags in the loggia and discovering that around 80% of them were still in good condition. We always hoped that would be the case, but seeing them in reality was a real cause for celebration.

When audiences return, what do you hope they'll notice first?

Part of me hopes they'll notice everything: the refurbished gates, the beautifully restored gold-leaf lights, the owl at the entrance, and even the salmon-pink lift. But in another sense, I hope there are things audiences don't notice at all.

A huge amount of conservation work has taken place, particularly in the lower ground floor entrance, where large sections of stone have been carefully repaired or replaced using stone salvaged from elsewhere in the building. Ideally, people will walk through those spaces without realising how much work has happened. That's often the sign of successful conservation.

The newer additions, such as the bar spaces, are a little different. I hope people notice and enjoy those. Hopefully audiences enjoy the space for what it is and that the facilities we've added help Leeds Town Hall to thrive for the next 160 years.

The future home of the Leeds Ticket Hub is coming together beautifully, with the recent installation of stunning ash flooring bringing the space one step closer to completion. Next for this space is the installation of the desk, leaflet storage rack and acoustic panelling.

The UK Recovery Walk Bradford 2026

The UK Recovery Walk is coming to Bradford. This three-day event is a way for those in recovery from addiction to celebrate their recovery, share their stories and remember those who have lost their lives to addiction.

• The Recovery Conference – Friday 11 September at Bradford Live - This conference brings together health professionals, care providers and people with lived experience to share best practice and insights into recovery
• The UK Recovery Walk – Saturday 12 September, Bradford City Centre - Setting off at 12pm outside City Hall, the Recovery Walk follows a 1mile route around the city centre. There will also be a recovery village in Centenary Square with live music, food, entertainment and a dry bar.
• The Recovery Ramble – Sunday 13 September, Saltaire - The Recovery Ramble sets off from the carpark at Salts School and follows a nature trail around Shipley Glen and Roberts Park.

Rare Ellis-Briggs bicycle joins our Museums & Galleries collection

A rare Ellis-Briggs bicycle has been donated to our Museums & Galleries collection by the family of the late late Neil Crabtree, a lifelong cycling enthusiast who purchased the bespoke machine from Ellis-Briggs in Shipley in 1989 for £274. 

Following his death in 2025, his children, Jane Nugent and Jonathan Crabtree, approached Bradford District Museums & Galleries to donate the treasured family object, so that both their father's story and the craftsmanship behind the bicycle could be preserved for future generations. 

The bike is currently on display as part of the Made by Many Hands exhibition at Bradford Industrial Museum. Once the exhibition closes, the bicycle will go on display in the museum's Transport Gallery.

Partnership exploring the history and legacy of Bradford's Somali community wins national award

A pioneering partnership exploring the history and legacy of Bradford's Somali community has won the Cultural Knowledge Exchange Project of the Year Award at the Future Icons of Culture Knowledge Exchange Awards.

The project was led by Somali Village in partnership with Bradford Council’s Bradford District Museums and Galleries, Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, the University of Leeds and the University of Bradford.

The Somali Village research project explored the experiences of the Somali community who came to Bradford as part of the city's 1904 Great Exhibition which coincided with the opening of Cartwright Hall Art Gallery.

An exhibition at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, which runs until 1 November, revisits the history of the Somali Village and places the experiences of the people who lived there at its centre.

Connect with Nature this September Bradford Pennine Gateway Trail Challenge Walk 19 September Walking Event  Join us to celebrate the launch of the new Bradford Pennine Gateway Trail route. Here's our August round up, as summer draws to a close and we prepare for the return to school and daily routines. Despite the challenging weather there's been a lot to celebrate and plenty to look forward to in the coming season. An amazing summer in our parks Summer has flown by, but its been action packed and so much fun! Shout out to everyone who has enjoyed time in our outdoors and done your bit to help keep them clean, tidy and welcoming for all. A few summer highlights have been: Millhouses Waterplay reopening celebration event Round Sheffield Run - hosted from Endcliffe Park Kids holiday clubs at Ecclesall Woods and Sheffield Botanical Gardens Fun fairs at Graves and Firth Park Colouring with llamas, goat-kid feeding and beach fun at Graves Animal Farm Gruffalo Gathering reading festival at Hillsborough Park Community fun days across the city, and of course... Tramlines! What a weekend it was at Hillsborough Park - more than 100,000 people came to the park across the 3 days of live music, with amazing headliners Fat Boy Slim, Courteeners and Wolf Alice bringing the house down! Crowds gather at the main stage to watch The Coral at Tramlines 2026 Festival organisers still hold the original ethos of the event from Sarah Nulty by supporting local artists to perform and giving back to the park and local causes. Huge recognition to our Hillsborough Park team for their hard work in preparing the site for the festival and getting things back to normality so quickly. The 2026 edition was so good that early bird and tier 1 tickets are already sold out for next year! Tramlines 2027 Dry conditions and fires Scorched land and vegetation following a fire at Westwood It's been a challenging month across our 'not-so-green' open spaces, with extreme dry conditions increasing the risk and severity of fires. We've had teams out every day taking on extra activity to reduce risk and supporting our emergency services in handling the impact of fires in the region. We want to express a huge thank you to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, South Yorkshire Police and our own staff for all their efforts, as well as local people for taking care and precautions in helping to reduce risk. The wetter weather has brought some relief, but dry conditions are still an issue across our parks and countryside and in your own gardens. There is still risk of fires and so we ask everyone to continue: No fires No BBQs No waste left behind No tolerance for others' irresponsible actions - please report to firestoppers Fire stoppers Firth Park new look playground New playground equipment at Firth Park Following a playground refurbishment, Firth Park was heaving earlier this week as local people came together to celebrate the grand reopening. Working in partnership with the Friends of Firth Park to meet the need of local people, we installed new equipment that will appeal to children both young and old, providing a safe and welcoming playground for them to enjoy. The celebration event organised by SOAR - Unity in the Community - was supported by the Friends group and featured live music, dance performances, children's games, activities and more! Award shortlist for Courtside Courtside Hillsborough has been shortlisted for another award! Following a rigorous process, Courtside was selected as one of the top finalists in the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Service Awards 2026 for Best Public/Private Partnership Working initiative. The awards take place on Thursday 17 September - wish us luck! Nature watch There's been a 'murder' As the crows gather in Norfolk Park, a murder is a regular occurrence. While crossing the 'conservation grassland', the Centre in the Park within reach, numerous eyes scan your soul. But fear not, for no life has been lost. The collective noun for a gathering of crows (Corvus Corone) is a 'murder'. A 'murder' of crows search for food in the grasses at Norfolk Park Highly intelligent, these birds can be seen foraging for tit-bits in the areas of long grass around the park. Prior to the breeding season, these usually solitary birds gather en-masse to rake over the turf, often ragging out the mosses in search of hidden invertebrates. Numbers can reach more than 100 birds, which can make for a very sinister stroll through these un-flappable midnight black Corvids. Grass snake egg piles These awesome creatures love wetland habitats or dry grasslands near a water source and if you're lucky you might see them in various locations across Sheffield. A grass snake hiding out in an egg pile created by our rangers and local volunteers. To support the survival of grass snakes our rangers and volunteers have been using the ARG UK (Amphibian and Reptile Groups UK) guidance on how to build grass snake egg laying piles. The team created some egg laying piles to provide warmth for the snakes to thrive, and we were very happy to find a one actually using this intervention.  Although they might seem scary, grass snakes are harmless to humans, non-venomous, and excellent swimmers, growing up to 150cm long!
