Rivers in the Sky, Talk by Alan Pearson

A talk by Alan Pearson

Thursday, 27th August 2026

11:30 -12:30 pm

Starting on Steeton Moor, on the edge of a sea of ice that stretched all the way to the North Pole, Alan's talk will follow a string of lakes and the overflow channels that connected them.

At the end of the Ice Age, huge volumes of meltwater cascaded across the hills high above the Aire Valley. This river ran for 50 kilometres alongside the ice and passed through places in Bradford where Alan grew up.

Over the last five years Alan has walked along all these ancient riverbeds and recorded in photographs the retreat of the glacier, detailing each new channel as the ice melted back.

Join him for a walk in a barren, frozen landscape when a glacier filled the Aire Valley

Bradford Local Studies Library, Tel: 01274 433688, Margaret McMillan Tower (side entrance), Princes Way, BD1 1NN

The event is free but booking is essential.

With thanks to Hannah at Get Lost Yorkshire:

Weekly Escape

Hey

I don’t know about you, but this part of August always feels a little strange.

Summer isn’t quite over, but September is starting to creep into the edges. Diaries are filling back up, routines are returning, and there’s that familiar feeling of wanting to squeeze in one or two more adventures before the season slips away.

So this week, I thought I’d share something simple and useful: nine circular walks in West Yorkshire.

I love a circular walk because there’s something very satisfying about ending up back where you started without having to retrace your steps. Especially if there’s a café, pub, picnic spot or ice cream waiting nearby!

This guide includes a mix of routes, from peaceful woodland wanders and lakeside strolls to bigger moorland walks with proper views. You’ll find ideas around Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Marsden, Bingley and Haworth, including places like Judy Woods, Newmillerdam, Castle Hill, Five Rise Locks and Top Withens.

Some are gentle. Some will definitely make your legs work a bit harder. But they all offer a lovely excuse to get outside and make the most of these final summer days.

👉 Read the full guide to 9 circular walks in West Yorkshire here

Whether you’re planning one last summer holiday walk, a weekend reset, or just looking for somewhere new close to home, I hope there’s a route in there that gives you a little inspiration.

Until our next adventure,
