Too Pretty To Punch

by Edalia Day

A comedy spoken word show about gender, the media and not fitting any of the boxes, full of explosive movement, original songs and kickass video projection. Edalia Day is a banjo wielding, poetry slam winning, trans warrior, taking on the world one troll at a time.

Too Pretty To Punch is a hilarious and uplifting journey through what it means to be trans in 21st century Britain. It reminds all of us (regardless of who we are) of the power of celebrating our existence.

Time: 19:30
Date: 12th February 2022

The Holbeck, Jenkinson Lawn, LS11 9QX

★★★★★ - Feminist Fringe
"a magnificent tapestry of gender expectations...a digital masterpiece."

★★★★★ - Broadway Baby
"Too Pretty to Punch is the rare queer show that I have no qualms recommending to anyone. Everyone should see this show."

★★★★★ - Edinburgh 49
"You come for the social commentary, which is lucid and insightful, you stay for the video-projection, which is (as promised) kickass."

"Head-spinning, joyful, painful, funny - and I loved the tech. It's a blast from and to the heart." - Chris Thorpe

Edalia is a transgender/non-binary spoken word artist, animator and theatre maker based in Norwich. Trained at Lecoq and Alra, their theatre is visually stunning, with physical comedy and a child like sense of play at the heart of everything they make.

The finale includes poetry, video and audio contributions from 15 transgender and/ or nonbinary poets from all over the world:

Lee Mokobe, Ashe Vernon, Cairo Nevitt, Ash Palmisciano Robbie Masters, Adriana Scott Newsum, Leo George, George Cook, Millie Quick, Sez Thomasin, Jay Hulme, Carey Wood-Duffy, Kit Rayne, Kay Kassirer.

Creative Kirklees Newsletter 8 February 2022

A warm welcome to this week’s newsletter which contains a wonderful selection of creative activities, news and opportunities for you!  We’ve selected just a few to highlight here but you will find so much more if you scroll down the newsletter and check out our website.

As most of you will probably know, Gordon Stewart retired as the Kirklees Borough Organist last year, so we are extra excited to see him return to Huddersfield Town Hall for a concert in his new role as Organist Emeritus next Monday (14 February), when he will be accompanied by special guest Tom Osborne, Assistant Principal Trumpet at the Halle.

If you or anyone you know are interested in working in film and TV, you may be interested in some part-time training courses recently announced by Screen Yorkshire.  The courses are in Lighting, Hair & Make-Up, Costume, Production Assistant (scripted), Art Direction & Props and My First Factual TV Job.

The Kirklees Year of Music team is hosting its next industry event to introduce the talent development program ‘Launchpad’ to music professionals in Yorkshire.  The event, which will be held at the Lawrence Batley Theatre on Wednesday 16 February, is open to anyone working in the industry and will focus on artist/industry development opportunities available to music professionals in the region.

Holmfirth Stitch Social is a free, social sewing group which began in January 2020 and they are staring up again on Wednesday evenings beginning tomorrow (9 February).  Why not take along your stitch, knit or crochet project and make and chat alongside others?

As mentioned last week the Mrs Sunderland Festival is now underway so do have a look what they have on offer - you might want to be booking your tickets for the Young Musician of the Year evening and the Last Night of the Festival Concert to make sure you don’t miss out.

Have a great week being creative!
