Stay at Home:
Poetry and art from the people of Bradford in response to COVID-19
We
are pleased to announce that we have published two books featuring
poetry and art submissions from the people of Bradford.
We wanted to reflect on our experiences living through the 2020
COVID-19 Pandemic so we invited the people of Bradford of all ages to
submit their poetry or artwork for inclusion in one of two books – one
for adults and one for children and young people.
We also invited poets and artists who have worked with Bradford
Libraries on various projects to contribute to this book and are
constantly grateful for their support and creativity.
The cover artwork chosen for the children and young people’s book is by
Ania Grobarz-Manu. The cover artwork chosen for the adult collection is
‘Lockdown’ by Idris Walters.
We would like to thank all the people who submitted their artwork or
poetry. We received poetry and art that demonstrated a variety of
interesting themes and images with very personal responses to a unique
and unexpected situation.
The books will be available to borrow from all our libraries.

The Winter Mini
Challenge from the Reading Agency
If
you’re a fan of the annual Summer Reading Challenge then you’ll love
the Winter Mini Challenge from The Reading Agency.
This winter they have teamed up with award-winning
inclusive publisher Knights Of to run
an Everyone Is a Hero themed Mini Challenge - to celebrate heroes in
all their forms and keep children reading this winter.
The Winter Mini Challenge runs until
Friday 15 January 2021- it encourages children to keep up their reading
habits over the winter holidays, with a free-to-access website
featuring rewards and incentives for reading and reviewing books.
This year's Mini Challenge features characters from books
published by Knights Of, including those from Knights and Bikes
(written by Gabrielle Kent; illustrated by Rex Crowle), High-Rise
Mystery (written by Sharna Jackson; illustrated by Wumzum), and
the Run series (written by Jason Reynolds; illustrated by Selom Sunu).
Knights Of have also created a special booklist of
their favourite titles to try during the Challenge. The list
is full of heroes that inspire, challenge and push the definition of
what it means to be a hero.
Children can visit the Winter Mini Challenge website at www.wintermini.org.uk from
1 December 2020 to start rating and reviewing their books and enjoying
the online activities. They need to read three books to unlock the

Bookstart Baby
Packs
Bradford Council registrars have stepped in to help a free
book gifting programme which gifts books to children in their first year
of life.
Bookstart, which is overseen by the district’s
Libraries is a national scheme delivering book packs to children in the
early years.
Under normal circumstances, the Bookstart Baby Pack for
children age 0-12 months which contains two free board books, a colourful
rhyme sheet and parental guidance booklet, would be gifted at 9-12 months
in a face to face visit. Due to Covid pandemic restrictions this
has not been possible.
Registrars have agreed to hand out the packs provided by the
BookTrust charity to each child at the birth registration appointment.
The registrars will gift these packs to families registering
their child’s birth from 9th November.
A child born between March and October 2020 whose birth has
already been registered may have missed out on the pack due to the
pandemic restrictions. Those families can contact their local
library after 2nd December to arrange a timed collection slot
to pick up a pack – check here
for details. Families are asked not to call into the
library unless they have pre-booked a collection slot.
When collecting the free book packs, families can also
utilise the library service’s order and collect offer to ensure that
babies have many more books to enjoy. There are no fines on
children’s books if they are late returned.
Families with babies can also tune in to the library
service’s online rhyme times and story times to support reading and
rhymes.
Reading to your baby helps their brain and language to
develop. As you read to your baby, they tune in to the rhythm and
the rise and fall of your voice. When you show them a picture and give
the image a name, they begin to make the connection between what you say
and the picture, helping them to first understand words and later speak
them.
Cllr Sarah Ferriby said “This is a crucial time in a child’s
development and we want to ensure that every new family in Bradford has
access to books and resources to support this. It is really great
to see Bradford Council services working together to ensure that children
have the best start possible.”

COVID-19 Vaccine
Survey
Plans are
underway to roll out a vaccination that will protect people from
COVID-19.
To help these
plans, we want to hear from you:
Are you
planning to have the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes
available?
Is there
anything that would stop you from having the vaccine?
What questions
do you have?
Tell us your
views by completing our survey:
COVID-19 Vaccine Survey
Please share the link with your contacts,
friends and family to help us hear from as many people as
possible across our communities.
About this
survey
This survey has been created on behalf of
partners across the local health and care
system. We are working closely together,
as NHS organisations, local councils,
Healthwatch, the faith sector, voluntary
sector and community organisations to make
sure that the views of all Bradford
District and Craven communities are understood.
What will
happen to my information?
The information you share in this survey
will be used to help make plans for how we
will deliver the COVID-19 vaccination
programme in Bradford District and Craven.
We will produce reports that will include
information about what people tell us and
about the different groups of people who
took part. We will not ask for your name or
contact details, and we will not share any
information that could identify you.
About the
vaccine
A coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine has been
approved for use in the UK.
The vaccine has met strict standards of
safety, quality and effectiveness set out by the
Medicines and Healthcare products
Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Other vaccines are being developed. They
will only be available on the NHS once they
have been thoroughly tested to make sure
they are safe and effective.
