Cleckheaton Writer's Group minutes, Zoom meeting on Monday 30 November 2020

Cleckheaton Writer's Group (CWG) met last night on Zoom with Alice, Gemma, Karen, Neil and new members Andrea and Ashley in attendance, Daniel and Sarah having passed on their apologies.

Andrea and Ashley were welcomed to the meeting and the CWG members explained the kind of writing they do and the meeting format. Ashley explained that she has an interest in short story writing and that she has undertaken a course at The Writers Bureau. Andrea is interested in long form writing and has an idea for a shory based around a real life wool combing event in Bradford in 1825. Karen also outlined the writing the other members of CWG, who were not at the meeting, undertake.

The minutes from the previous meeting were passed.

WIP updates: Karen has been taking part in NaNoWriMo to try and get her latest WIP, a romantic comedy (RC), to first draft. She has also written a few new poems as part of the HLF creative voices group, submitted 10k words of her YA fantasy WIP to her GEA editor, entered the DHH Literary Agency Pitch DHH Virtual contest and been editing her picture book and script. Alice was taking part in NaNoWriMo until the 15th then she needed to undertake editing on her GEA MS as it needed to be 10% shorter. She has 6 chapters to go, approximately 9k words but has to keep track of the time-travel element. Gemma has finished NaNoWriMo as she has a full first draft of her second MS. She has just started to edit using post it notes, looking at gaps and consistency. She also entered the DHH Literary Agency Pitch DHH Virtual contest but has already received a rejection which is disappointing news. Neil has taken a break from writing to job search and complete an admin course.

Feedback sessions: No work had been shared for feedback.

CW comps/workshops/events: Karen informed members about the Curtis Brown Creative The Breakthrough Writers' Programme and the Do What You Love For Life U.S. free creative writing course: curtisbrowncreative.co.uk and https//email.dowhatyouloveforlife.com/t/t-l-xdtmyk-shijrjjtk-i/ Jericho Writers are also running online courses currently. Gemma informed members of the Writers HQ advent challenge and a range of online workshops by Alex Davis. They are 'pay what you fee'l and they may be run in the new year too: writershq.co.uk and alexdaviswriting.blogspot.com.

Proposed Christmas Zoom meeting: It is proposed that the next meeting on Monday 14 December be a Christmas-themed meeting with a writing challenge (see below) and each member supplying their own festive eats and drinks (mince pie and sherry anyone?) as the meeting will be via Zoom once more.

Writing plans: Karen has to write over 5k words to finish NaNoWriMo in time, plus she will be working on editing her picture book and crime novel to send to agents, the script she is collaborating on and finish her full first draft of the RC WIP. She also has a 1-2-1 meeting with her GEA editor on 7 December. Alice will still be editing her first novel (loving that sticker chart) and then looking at her second. Gemma will be continuing her first edit of her latest MS (post it heaven). Neil is hoping to complete his ghost short story and attempt the Christmas-themed writing challenge. Andrea and Ashley also hope to complete the Christmas-themed writing challenge.

Writing challenge/session: The writing challenge set was to write with a Christmas theme. This can be anything from short stories, poetry, a scene from a longer work or however you feel inspired. Good luck.

Date of next meeting: Monday 14 December, 5.45pm on Zoom
