Join us for a
professional development roadshow this January
On 18
January we will be in
Blackpool with our partners The Literary Consultancy for a
roadshow with sessions on working with publishers, finding outlets for
new work and advice for writers considering applying for the Northern
Writers’ Awards and other opportunities.
We're delighted to announce our final roadshow
of this winter, in association with Hachette Children's Books.
This roadshow for new and aspiring children's writers will take place
in Sheffield
on Wednesday 29
January, where we’ll be joined by editors
from Hachette Children's Group, the children’s agent and
judge, Chloe Seager, and the author and winner of the 2019
prize, James Harris, all of whom will be sharing their expertise
and experience across a series of panels.

‘New Narratives for the
North East’ commissions programme: apply by 20 January
What role might writers have in helping to shape
the future of the North East? Our new ambitious commissioning project seeks
to find out. In early 2020, we will commission at least twelve new pieces
of work from writers who live and work in the North.
We are asking writers to look beyond the flux and
rhetoric of the current moment to explore how the contemporary North East
ticks; to consider the heritage of our region, and to inspire us with new
ideas about what its future story might be.
With each piece of original writing, we want to get
under the skin of the region. We’ll be commissioning broadly across the
forms of creative non-fiction, documentary reportage, fiction, poetry,
verbatim accounts, and personal memoir to find new narratives for the North
East.

The writer will research and develop original work
inspired by both the site and the Delaval family history; create and run a
course for aspiring or emerging writers at the hall, and develop writing
workshops for the local community based on the same material. The residency
will take place over eight months from March 2020 – November 2020, and will
culminate in a public event to share the work created through the
programme.
