Writers! Fill in our questionnaire and be in with a chance to win £250
New Writing North has launched a questionnaire for writers who live and work in the North of England. Information gleamed from the questionnaire will help NWN to plan our work and support for writers over the next three years and may directly influence new funding streams that we hope to launch in the future. It will also allow us to understand more about the needs and demographics of writers in the North of England which will help those that fund us to recognise the needs of the sector.
The questionnaire asks for information on how writers earn income, their skills development needs, professional development issues, and how writers are using digital media. We’d be very grateful if you could take the time to fill it in (it should take no more than 10 minutes of your time) and share it with your writer friends and contacts. When the questionnaire closes on 31 January, one winning writer, picked at random from those who completed the questionnaire, will win a £250 voucher for a retailer of their choice. Please note that you can fill in the questionnaire without giving your name and address (though you can’t be entered for the prize draw if you do so).

A final stocking filler from New Writing North
We hope you have been enjoying the little gifts we have sent you over the past couple of weeks. The final one comes out of a rather lovely poetry afternoon we hosted at Durham Book Festival in conjunction with the Centre for Poetry and Poetics at Durham University. The final act of the day was our Festival Laureate, the multi-award winning poet Paul Farley, who wrote a poem especially for the festival.

All change at New Writing North
After nearly seven years, marketing and communications manager Olivia Chapman is leaving New Writing North. Keeper of this newsletter, amongst a great many other things, Olivia has been central to our organisation and will be hugely missed. Stepping into the role of marketing and communications manager is Laura Fraine, who can be reached at laurafraine@newwritingnorth.com.
We are also welcoming back Claire Malcolm, chief executive of New Writing North, who returns to work full-time from January.
In memory of Clare Swift
The Northern Writers’ Awards welcome a new addition this year – The Clare Swift Short Story Award – worth £1,000 and awarded to the best unpublished short story written by an author based in the North East. The award, which was the idea of her friends at her book group, has been created in memory of Clare Swift (nee Bartley), of Whitley Bay, who was just 47 when she died in 2013 following a short illness. There was a lovely piece about Clare in yesterday’s Journal

Congratulations
Congratulations to Chloe Daykin, a 2014 Northern Writers’ Awards winner, who has been longlisted for BBC SCRIPTROOM 8 with her play, Janice Hartley is a Witch.
Guy Mankowski’s new book, How I Left the National Grid, is a thriller set in the North East music scene. ‘Anyone who remembers Melody Maker, or who attended indie nights in clubs strewn with Snakebite, will fall in love with this book immediately,’ says the Huffington Post. Consider us sold.
Opportunities
CBBC New Voices Initiative
CBBC is setting up an intensive, skills-based programme designed to give emerging writers valuable insights into writing for an ongoing children’s TV series, covering all stages of the scripting process with input from experienced writers, producers, script editors and executive producers. The aim is to find and support writers so they kickstart an ongoing relationship with the CBBC drama team. The project lasts around six months. Up to 15 writers will be invited to attend a ‘Writing Children’s Television’ workshop at MediaCityUK next February. Travel, accommodation and hospitality will be provided and writers will be paid a workshop attendance fee. From this group, between 3-6 writers will be selected to follow the scripting process of a CBBC show as well as completing writing exercises. The emphasis at all times is on developing the practical craft of the participating writers, it is not to generate ideas for any particular show. It is anticipated that there will be up to four days of face to face training during this period, alongside contact via email.
For more information, including how to apply, see www.newwritingnorth.com/news_details-cbbc-new-voices-initiative-details-3182.html. Deadline: Monday 12 January.
