Magic in the Moonlight film review
Went to see this movie with my friend A on Tuesday at the Leeds/Bradford Odeon.
IMDB says: A romantic comedy about an Englishman brought in to help unmask a possible swindle. Personal and professional complications ensue.
In this Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris, Manhattan) written and directed film, Colin Firth (Love Actually, The King's Speech) plays Stanley, better known as Wei Ling Soo the 'magician from the Orient' who is asked by a friend a fellow magician, Howard Burkan (Simon McBurney, The Last King of Scotland, The Duchess) to unmask a suspected fraudulent psychic, Sophie the spiritualist, played by a kooky Emma Stone (The Help, Spiderman).
Firth plays Stanley with all the warmth of an artic Winter and captures the cynic perfectly in his performance, whilst Stone is ever the beautiful and bubbly optimist in this heart-warming little film which tries to show the audience the magic that life has to offer if one only opens ones eyes up to see it. There is also a fantastic turn by Eileen Atkins (Cold Mountain, The Hours) as Stanley's Aunt Vanessa who is shrewd and able to cleverly manipulate those around her. There are some lovely comic scenes with Hamish Linklater (Fantastic Four, Battleship) as Brice Catledge, a spoiled, little rich boy who imagines himself in love with Sophie and serenades her at every opportunity whilst his more aware relatives George, Jeremy Shamos (Birdman, Dedication) and Caroline, Erica Leerhsen (Hollywood Ending, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) encourage Stanley to get to the bottom of things.
All my optimism was an illusion. 6.5/10
