Competition round-up: short stories, short film scripts and open call out

Thanks to my fellow blogger Displacement Activity for the following competition information:



Simon & Schuster publishers, in association with Handbag.com and BooksAndTheCity.com, have announced a short story competition. The Great British Write Off contest is looking for short fiction of up to 2.500 words. According to the competition site, stories must be in the "women's fiction" genre. 

The closing date is 31st January 2014. The first prize includes mentoring sessions with agent Lizzy Kremer and author Milly Johnson, ebook publication of the story, and promotion of the story through social media channels. More details are available at the competition website.




The Stinging Fly Davy Byrnes Short Story Award 2014

This short fiction competition is open to Irish citizens and to writers who are resident or were born in Ireland. Previously unpublished short stories up to 15,000 words may be entered. There's no minimum word count. The first prize is €15,000. There are five €1,000 runners-up awards. The competition closes 3rd February 2014. More details may be found here.


This short film script competition is for five-minute film scripts with the theme / title "April Fools Day". The deadline for scripts (the movie should be set on April Fool's Day) is 28th February 2014. Nine shortlisted scripts may be featured on the competition website and the winning script will be filmed in March 2014, prior to a screening on 1st April 2014. You can find more details here. Salt Publishing Modern Dreams call for submissions

Salt Publishing have announced details of a new digital publishing initiative, aimed at writing for and about contemporary inner-city Britain, targeting a readership of 18 to 24 year olds. Salt's Modern Dreams imprint is looking for original previously unpublished novellas of between 20,000 to 30,000 words. There's a 50/50 split on royalties on offer, plus the backing of Salt Publishing. You can find out more information here.
