The Man With The Golden Keys

For the past seven years, pianist Tony Kieraldo has brought his distinctive style and dazzling virtuosity to the global stage with Postmodern Jukebox.

Now, he steps into the spotlight for an unforgettable evening of music alongside drummer/vocalist Jack Amblin and vocalist Katherine Lupino.

Ruffled Feathers

by Debjani Chatterjee

My parrot with the ruffled feathers

is bolshie;

its language

is nobody’s business;

its squawk stabs the ears.

And such attitude!

You see it when it cocks its head;

catch its crazed gleam — and freeze!

When it flies

above you — duck!

My bird’s one wicked pet.

Yeah — it’s teaching me a thing or two.

Weekly Escape

Over the bank holiday weekend, I found myself soaking up the sunshine on a peaceful walk around Thruscross Reservoir - and I wasn’t just there for the views.

Thanks to ongoing drought conditions, the reservoir’s water level has dropped low enough to reveal something incredibly rare: the ghostly remains of West End, a village that was submerged in the 1960s to make way for the reservoir. You can still spot crumbling walls, the outline of a bridge, and hints of buildings that once made up homes, a mill, a school, and a church.

It’s haunting, beautiful, and absolutely fascinating.

West End was already in decline before the dam was built. The flax industry had collapsed, and many of the buildings were derelict. But when Thruscross Reservoir was created, the valley was flooded, and the entire hamlet disappeared beneath the water… until now.

💡 If you’re thinking of visiting:
There’s a pay-and-display car park at the reservoir, and it’s a lovely walk, especially for those who enjoy a side of history with their scenery. Just be sure to stick to the designated paths. Yorkshire Water advises against walking on the exposed reservoir bed - it’s unstable and can be dangerous.

This is one of those truly unique Yorkshire moments, where nature and history collide in the most unexpected way. I’ll definitely be going back once the seasons change, just to see what the water reveals next…

📸 Have you been to Thruscross Reservoir recently? Hit reply or let me know over in the Yorkshire Hidden Gems Facebook Group - I’d love to hear your stories or see your photos!

Until our next adventure,
