Circuits of Experiences, Research and Knowledges in Norway

In June, Idle Women partnered with Professor Anne Szefer Karlsen of the University of Bergen to present at Circuits of Experiences, Research and Knowledges, a four day conference attended by curators, artists, art mediators, and educators.

Prompted by increasing polarisation in many parts of the world, and a consistent dismantling or co-opting of institutions, the main topic of the conference was how to gather when structures to gather disappear?

The conference focused on how curatorial and educational practices can have productive solutions and was beautifully reviewed by e-flux.

Stones on the ground beside a woman's feet

Stonewall

Foundations are fundamental, representing our values, beliefs and actions. Having a solid foundation is like having a moral compass, our own footings dictate the decisions we make, the road we each take. In recognising the power of a strong foundation we are better able to understand the importance of the strength and integrity of ourselves and others. – Anita Faherty 2025

Between 2019 and 2024, Anita Faherty hand built every stone wall and seat in the Physic Garden, using over 30 tonnes of reclaimed stone. We first met Anita on a drystone walling course for women in 2017. Our choice to work with dry stone walls was made to reference both the local landscape and specifically The Enclosures Acts.

Idle Women are beginning a new body of work – A Case for Land – a series of gatherings, chapters, perspectives and arguments around access to our rightful place on land. At an event this summer, we revisited the stone walls with Anita and remembered the words of our friend and mentor – historian Silvia Federici – who helped to conceive the garden:

In the mindset of much destruction, another world is growing, like the grass in the cracks of the urban pavement, affirming our interdependence and capacity for cooperation [...] Can we imagine reconstructing our lives around a commoning of our relationship with others, including animals, waters, plants and mountains? This is the horizon that the discourse and the politics of the commons opens for us today, not the promise of an impossible return to the past but the possibility of recovering the power of collectively deciding our fate on this earth. – from Re-enchanting The World: Feminism and the Politics of the Commons (2018) by Silvia Federici

The gatherings and performances that form this work are evolving slowly and coming to public fruition with support from Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s Arts Fund.

Two women seen rock climbing, one reaches for the other's hand

Iwa-dō

In Japanese, "iwa" (岩) means stone or rock, and "dō" (道) means path, way, or road.

In July, we gathered in the Physic Garden with climber and artist Ashima Shiraishi. Cis O’Boyle introduced the local rock – slate, gritstone, limestone – and talked about the dry stone walls built by Anita Faherty. Leaving the garden, with crash pads on our backs and 4.5 billion years of geology on our minds, we walked into the landscape.

Scaling West Yorkshire's gritstone boulders together, we were led in a climbing, meditation and poetry workshop by Ashima. An act of channeling collective strength and creativity.

An online work by Ashima in collaboration with creative technologist Rifke is forthcoming.

Fire Chai Club

Artist and creative technologist Rifke joined our weekly Fire Chai Club for a day, tasked with co-creating a spontaneous, playful net-artwork to share the essence of our weekly meet ups and introduce us to website building. With just a few hours together, and then a little follow up via WhatsApp, firechai.club was created.

This website – much like the weekly meeting from which it draws its name – is activated by women coming together. If enough of us gather around the fire, a new recipe emerges from the flames every Thursday.

Worm Moon — Mud Meditation

The spiritual energy of the worm moon is a powerful reminder that transformation often happens at the subtle level underneath the surface. – Seyi Adelekun

During the march worm moon, women gathered with artist Seyi Adelekun.

Together with bare feet in cold earth, a collective moment out of the rational, we seeded a mediation for all sisters. We seek deeper connections as destabilisation takes hold, so much has changed in the last year. We invite you to stand firm and join us in deep earth listening.

Before the warm weather is all but gone, download, find somewhere you can connect with the ground, and listen to Worm Moon – Mud Meditation.

Idle Women is an arts and social justice collaboration founded by artists.

Our projects reach for something beyond the horizon, creating transformative spaces for women that can't be cut, closed or taken away. Spaces include the Physic Garden, Selina Cooper (narrowboat), physicgarden.network and stadiumfuture.space.

We are a collaboration with women from any and all walks of life. We believe women deserve better and work to our strengths because we know that transformation is a daily process, there are always other ways and beauty is complicated.

A New Perspective

Hi,

There’s more to Ireland than stunning landscapes – the real magic lies in its stories, traditions and people.

At Wilderness, we’ve always believed the best journeys go beyond the bucket list and into the heart of a place. We wanted to create a style of travel that weaves together history, tradition and natural beauty. So we asked ourselves, “What if we could showcase Ireland’s heritage and culture in an immersive, relaxed and accessible way?” From that idea, our Culture & Heritage Tours were born.

With carefully chosen regions, expert local guides, and every detail thoughtfully arranged, our new Culture & Heritage trips are perfect for those who want to connect with Ireland’s past and present at a gentler pace.

All that’s left for you to do? Simply relax and enjoy every single moment.

Their music is rich with intertwining harmony, sensitive accomplished musicianship and a creative song-writing style that is both delicate and moving. In this blog, I’ve rounded up the best York river cruises, comparing each option and sharing insider tips like:
– How long each cruise lasts
– Which cruises include commentary, food or music
– Where to board
– And which ones are perfect for couples, families or solo wanderers

📍 Plus, if you’re planning a visit to York soon, you’ll find everything you need to pick the cruise that best fits your itinerary.
