Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, Monday 11 August 2025

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 11 August 2025 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library with Barbara, Karen and Reuben in attendance, Kathy, Michelle and Molly having passed on their apologies.

WIP updates: Karen has been editing, written some poetry and the beginning of the sequel to her crime novel. She has also entered some competitions and taken part in #QuestPit, securing a publisher like. Barbara has started her first ever non-fiction text book about Activity Organising for Care Homes and how to do it. She sees this as dispelling the myths that it is not just quiz questions and has planned out chapter/section by chapter/section to 35 which might be too much. Barbara has also sent a 1200 word story to Yours and Take A Break. Reuben has been applying for jobs but had an idea for his YA of mixing up the chapters and tweaking the order. For his Astrid project, he will make some tweaks to that too. He had hit a brick wall but realised he wanted to cut back on one-off characters and he might take out some of his long descriptions which he may put in a fantasy project. Reuben also has a sci-fi project waiting and had an idea of stuff to do with it.

CW competitions/workshops/events: Whitby Literature Festival 6-9 November with Lee Child as the headliner; Edinburgh Short Story competition with a £7 entry fee.

Writing plans: Karen to send three chapters and a synopsis of her dystopian YA Digital Heroin to Provoco Publishing following a request from #QuestPit and edit a couple of her MSs. She also hopes to get some writing done on her retreat. Reuben will be working on his thesis. Barbara will work on her non-fiction book and Valetta following David's feedback where he thought her short story could be chapter one of a longer piece. Barbara has written 3 more chapters and knows where its going to end; she just needs to work out some of the middle.

Feedback sessions: Karen read out some of her poems she had written on a recent online writing course and CWG members thought they resonated and evoked memories. Barbara informed CWG members about the Saga competition, and we hope she will share the links for this to members.

Writing challenge - August theme: Heatwave.

Next meeting: Monday 1 September due to the August Bank Holiday.
