Weekly Escape

Last week I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek inside Fairfax House ahead of the public opening of the new exhibition by York-based artist Ruth Beloe - and what a treat it was!

Walking through the beautifully preserved Georgian interiors with Beloe’s atmospheric oil paintings in situ was genuinely magical. Each piece captures the soft shifts of light across the rooms, artefacts, and architectural details, offering a whole new perspective on Fairfax. It felt like seeing the house for the first time - through the artist’s eyes.

One of the loveliest touches? Spotting the (now rather famous) Fairfax mice in some of the works in a playful nod to the character and quirks that make this place feel both grand and homely.

I found myself walking around the exhibition three times and spotting something new with each round. Each painting has subtle reflections, flickers of light, and glimpses of familiar objects made fresh.

The exhibition runs until 30th September and is included in general admission. The paintings are for sale, with proceeds supporting future conservation work at Fairfax House.

If you’re in or around York this summer, I highly recommend a visit. It’s thoughtful, beautiful and quietly moving.

Until our next adventure,
