May is continuing the trend! With true stories about a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic, a show and discussion about a new nuclear weapons treaty, a family show about bravery and getting your voice heard, as well as a family show inspired by three real life skateboarding sisters.  Pretty good eh?! Have a look for yourselves:  Date: Saturday 10th May Time: 7.30pm A one-man theatre show based on the life of Titanic survivor Edward Dorking.  THIRD CLASS charts Edward's journey from boarding the Titanic to swimming for 30 minutes towards an already full collapsible lifeboat and how he, upon arriving in New York, would tour the Vaudeville circuit, recreating the stories for a fact-hungry public. But Edward didn't want fame; he wanted revenge. When everyone was talking about the deaths of millionaires and society figures, few were discussing the people who took the lion's share of the losses that night: the third class. Edward was coming for the upper classes. May at Theatre in the Mill Take a look what we’ve been up to, and upcoming events Theatre in the Mill is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2025/2026 Seed Commission. The commission aims at supporting bold new work from emerging and established artists through funding, studio space, mentorship, and development opportunities. Rooted in experimentation and collaboration, the programme champions early-stage ideas with the potential to grow into powerful, original performance. The recipients of the 2025/2026 Seed Commissions are: Umar Butt Yusra Warsama John Namai Esther Kamba We’ll be announcing more details of these artists in the next few weeks, plus details on what they’re working on over the course of the year! Our Untitled 2: City of Wonder cohort finished their time with us on April 11 with their showcase, covering sound art installations, sculpture, musical theatre and more. We were so proud of the work that the artists did, and look forward to seeing their careers and projects develop further! We are further excited to welcome our new Untitled cohort, Untitled 3: Engines of Change. Artists Alex Dunlop, Lauren Egan, Mahshid Alavi, Munaza Kulsoom, Nicu Popescu and Phoebe Chan have started their time with Theatre in the Mill and have already undertaken 2 workshops. THE PIECE HALL GETS READY TO ROCK NEW SUMMER OPENING TIMES! Things are starting to look a little different here at The Piece Hall as we transform into a world class music venue to host 36 shows over the next three months! All our brilliant independent shops, bars, cafes and restaurants are still open as usual! The Piece Hall building is now open at the earlier time of 9am, seven days a week until the end of August. MORE THAN 40 STORES TO EXPLORE ACROSS ALL 3 FLOORS! From vinyl records to vintage clothes, fabulous fashion to fine art, crystals to cuddly toys, the greatest gift selections around and even a retro gaming arcade, The Piece Hall's independent stores are second to none. Welcome back May on the North Downs Way As we welcome back May - along with more spring flowers, swallows and swifts - we have plenty of events for you to join us at. Learn about medicinal plants, folklore, visit a lost village, and more. National Walking Month May is also National Walking Month, a celebration of the positive impact of walking on our mental and physical health, and the benefits of enjoying our beautiful national landscapes. Hop on a train, join us at one of our events, or explore the North Downs Way National Trail using one of our set routes. May’s lengthening days are the perfect time to explore. PICK A NEW SECTION OF THE NORTH DOWNS WAY TO EXPLORE Black Trail Runners Community Trail Run The Putting Down Routes team and Black Trail Runners have teamed up to bring you this run in Kent, exploring the trails of the North Downs Way. This is a 10km linear run, starting at Borough Green station and terminating at Otford station. 📅Sunday 4th May 2025,10.00am 📌Borough Green station, Sevenoaks 💵Free 🔗Book here Nature, Herb, Folklore & Wellness Walk with Black Girls Hike The highlights of this walk include two nature reserves; Sevenoaks and Polhill Bank, in which we’ll explore some of the medicinal plants growing there and learn about their traditional and modern uses, folklore stories, and taking some time to pause and do a sensory tea tasting exercise. This linear walk starts at Sevenoaks train station. We’ll be walking along some sections of the Darent Valley Path and the North Downs Way, taking in spectacular views of the Darent Valley and the Kent Downs. We’ll then make our way through Shoreham Woods heading towards Shoreham train station where our walk will end.. 📅Sunday 18th May 2025,10.00am 📌Sevenoaks train station 💵Free 🔗Book here Lost Village of Dode Walk and Talk Visit the mystical and ancient Lost Village of Dode, as part of a week of celebrations to mark the new North Kent Woods and Downs National Nature Reserve. Join the Putting Down Routes team for a ramble through one of the most beautiful and hidden parts of the Kent Downs National Landscape. Although less than 10 miles from Gravesend, this route is really off the beaten track and feels a lot more remote than it actually is. Starting at Holly Hill Wood car park, we will walk through woods, farmland and valleys, before ending up at the historic Lost Village of Dode, which was abandoned over 600 years ago during the Black Death. Last few places - North Downs Way Ambassador training We have just a few places left in our second cohort of North Downs Way Ambassadors. You’ll be a friendly and welcoming face along the trail, encouraging new users to the landscape to help build their confidence and knowledge about walking the North Downs Way and spending time in the countryside in general. You’ll learn how to lead and organise walks, and we will provide free resources to help you plan your events. You’ll be joining an already active and effective team of over 40 North Downs Way ambassadors, who are all just as passionate about sharing their knowledge and love for the landscape as you are. REGISTER HERE Route of the month - Cuxton to Detling If you want to visit Kit’s Coty House but can’t rouse yourself at sunrise, try this linear walk from Cuxton to Detling, passing the stunning Bluebell Hill viewpoint which is thought to be one of Kent’s finest vistas. This is a perfect picnic lunch spot to take in the views and the array of wildflowers and wildlife that thrives here. Kit’s Coty House is a short walk downhill from your lunch stop.
