An End to the Captions Drama Nears
Although no party is willing to comment, both Audible and seven complainant publishers say they've settled the lawsuit over the 'Captions' program, bringing one of 2019's more dramatic publishing-related court cases to an end. Meanwhile, a whole lot of job changes were announced this week, with Steve Rubin leaving Henry Holt after a decade, George Coe returning to Brodart Co. as president and CEO, and Tracie D. Hall taking over as executive director of the ALA. And at Orbit Books, the massive success of Netflix's The Witcher means going back to print on all titles in the series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, from which the show was adapted.

In Switzerland, Sibylle Berg has won the country's top literary honor, the Swiss Grand Prix, for her life's work. At the Atlantic, a new short fiction program kicks off with a story by Lauren Groff. Retired Pope Benedict XVI has distanced himself from a controversial book that no longer lists him as a co-author, NBC reports, while in more public figure book news, Ecco will publish a new book by Anthony Bourdain this year. In Hollywood news, the Jack Reacher series will see a TV adaptation on Amazon, the Hollywood Reporter has announced, while Stephen King, the Guardian reports, is facing backlash over comments he made on the lack of diversity in Academy Award nominations.

A Sales Streak Ends With 2019
They were a good few years, while they lasted, but they didn't last through 2019: print unit sales finally fell last year, by 1.3%, after years of growth. That doesn't mean it was a bad year for books, though, as the National Book Critics Circle Awards finalists show. And in more celebratory news, Jason Reynolds has been named the new National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. Across the Pacific, the Australian book business also saw sales dip in a difficult year, the Sydney Morning Herald reports, while in the U.K., e-tailer the Book People has cut 155 jobs, the BBC reports. The Irish Times looks into a slew of Holocaust novels following accusations of inaccuracy, while the New York Times compares textbooks from Texas and California and finds two very different stories of American history. And in Nigeria, Sahara Reporters has announced, author Chukwuemeka Ike has died at 88.

The Post-Holiday Sales Slump
Print sales took a tumble the week after Christmas, dropping 3.7% compared to last year's numbers. At Barnes & Noble Education, attempts to bump shareholder value have increased, with the company appointing a financial adviser. In prize news, John le Carré has won a $100,000 Swedish prize for his "contributions to democracy," which he has pledged to donate to Médecins Sans Frontières. And in more dramatic charitable news, the Guardian reports that Don Winslow and Stephen King have offered to donate $200,000 to a children's hospital if the White House holds a press briefing, which would be its first in nearly a year.

The RWA President Is Out
The RITAs are canceled, but the RWA conference isn't, despite imprints at all Big Five publishers and others pulling out of the event and its president and executive director resigning this morning. At OverDrive, 2019 was a banner year for digital borrowing, while in comics and children's news, IDW and Smithsonian have partnered on an illustrated books imprint. And religious publishing is also under the gun, with United Methodist Publishing readying for the church to split. In the library world, more libraries are going fine-free and the Hill explains why. A new Yukio Mishima documentary will be centered around restored footage of the controversial author, Variety reports. And Haunts of the Black Masseur author Charles Sprawson has died at 78.

The Books to Read This Year
Last year was a rough one for publishing industry stocks, with the Publishers Weekly Stock Index losing two companies and the remaining eight's combined stock price declining significantly. But there's plenty of good books on the horizon to chase down that news rounded up in the Millions' annual Great First-Half Book Preview. In comics news, Boom! is planning a graphic novel adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five. At Zora, the new Medium publication aimed at African-American women (and named after Zora Neale Hurston), the editors and a few writers have chosen the 100 best books by African-American women authors. In Australia, Book Riot reports, authors are working to raise money for firefighters fighting the country's raging bush fires. Finally, longtime publishing executive Clay Winters has died at 85, while Elizabeth Wurtzel, the author of Prozac Nation, has died at 52.

The Latest Bombshell at the RWA
Following weeks of controversy, the Romance Writers of America announced last night that the 2020 RITA Awards would be postponed until 2021 as a result of turmoil at the organization, leaving writers of romance fiction without a shot at the biggest award in their genre this year. At Hachette Book Group, CEO Michael Pietsch is happy with growth, while two smaller publishers are celebrating some growth of their own: Sourcebooks has acquired Dawn Publications, and the Experiment has acquired Appletree Press. And at PW, we've teamed up with BookBrunch to bring the Selfies Book Awards to the U.S. In France, the New York Times reports, a victim's account of an older author's predatory behavior has launched a reckoning over pedophilia in the country. In academic publishing news, the Department of Justice is investigating the founder of Sci-Hub for alleged ties to Russian intelligence, Techdirt reports. And Book Riot has published a piece recounting the history of buying books onto the bestseller list.

2019 Was the Year of the 'Crawdads'
Last year, Delia Owens's debut novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, did what few works of fiction these days can and became a bestseller nearly overnight. With the year-end numbers in, it's official: Crawdads was the biggest book of 2019. We've also rounded up the rest of the year's big stories, including some major changes in the bookselling world and a couple of significant disagreements between publishers, libraries, and, of course, Amazon. In this year's news, Mango Publishing has acquired Yellow Pear Press. As the fallout continues from a conflict within the ranks of the Romance Writers of America, novelist Kathryn Lynn Davis claims she was "used" as a pawn in political machinations within the group, the Guardian reports. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal is set to produce and star in a film adaptation of Alison Bechdel's Fun Home. And in the wake of the death of rapper and noted bookworm Nipsey Hussle, the L.A. Times reports, black men are finding inspiration in what he read.

One Hell of a Holiday Season
Usually, the winter holidays are quiet in the book business. This year, they brought a storm. Publishing is still reeling after the death of Knopf head Sonny Mehta earlier this week, and PRH CEO Madeline McIntosh has broached the succession topic in a letter to staff. In a final M&A announcement for the year, a private equity firm agreed to buy OverDrive from Rakuten USA. In lawsuit news, settlements are on the horizon in both the Barnes & Noble and the Audible Captions cases. And print units took a little tumble in the week before Christmas.

At the Romance Writers of America, an uproar over racism has resulted in the resignations of eight board members and the former president of the organization, the New York Times reports. Letters that T.S. Eliot explicitly did not want published will be unveiled after 60 years, while M.C. Beaton, the bestselling Scottish author, has died at 83. And as of January 1, a slew of books have entered the public domain. Hyperallergic highlights the good ones, while Slate highlights the bad.
