An End to the Captions Drama Nears
Although no party is willing to comment, both Audible and seven
complainant publishers say they've
settled the lawsuit over the 'Captions' program, bringing one of
2019's more dramatic publishing-related court cases to an end. Meanwhile, a
whole lot of job changes were announced this week, with Steve Rubin leaving Henry
Holt after a decade, George Coe returning to
Brodart Co. as president and CEO, and Tracie D. Hall taking over as
executive director of the ALA. And at Orbit Books, the massive
success of Netflix's The Witcher means going back to
print on all titles in the series by Polish author Andrzej
Sapkowski, from which the show was adapted.
In Switzerland, Sibylle Berg has won the country's top literary honor, the Swiss Grand Prix, for her life's work. At the Atlantic, a new short fiction program kicks off with a story by Lauren Groff. Retired Pope Benedict XVI has distanced himself from a controversial book that no longer lists him as a co-author, NBC reports, while in more public figure book news, Ecco will publish a new book by Anthony Bourdain this year. In Hollywood news, the Jack Reacher series will see a TV adaptation on Amazon, the Hollywood Reporter has announced, while Stephen King, the Guardian reports, is facing backlash over comments he made on the lack of diversity in Academy Award nominations.

A Sales Streak Ends With 2019
They were a good few years, while they lasted, but they didn't
last through 2019: print unit
sales finally fell last year, by 1.3%, after years of growth. That
doesn't mean it was a bad year for books, though, as the National Book
Critics Circle Awards finalists show. And in more celebratory
news, Jason Reynolds has been named the new National
Ambassador for Young People's Literature. Across the Pacific, the
Australian book business also saw sales dip
in a difficult year, the Sydney Morning Herald reports,
while in the U.K., e-tailer the Book People has cut 155
jobs, the BBC reports. The Irish Times looks into a slew of
Holocaust
novels following accusations of inaccuracy, while the New York
Times compares textbooks from Texas and California and finds two very
different stories of American history. And in Nigeria, Sahara
Reporters has announced, author Chukwuemeka Ike has died at 88.

The Post-Holiday Sales Slump
Print sales took a tumble the week after Christmas, dropping 3.7%
compared to last year's numbers. At Barnes & Noble Education,
attempts to bump shareholder value have increased, with the company appointing a
financial adviser. In prize news, John le Carré has won a $100,000
Swedish prize for his "contributions to democracy,"
which he has pledged to donate to Médecins Sans Frontières. And in more
dramatic charitable news, the Guardian reports that Don Winslow and
Stephen King have offered to donate $200,000 to a children's hospital if the White
House holds a press briefing, which would be its first in nearly a
year.

The RWA President Is Out
The RITAs are canceled, but the RWA conference isn't, despite
imprints at all Big Five publishers and others pulling out of
the event and its president and executive director resigning this morning.
At OverDrive, 2019 was a banner year

under the gun, with United Methodist Publishing readying for
the church to split. In the library world, more libraries
are going fine-free and the Hill explains why. A new Yukio
Mishima documentary will be
centered around restored footage of the controversial author, Variety
reports. And Haunts of the Black Masseur author Charles Sprawson has died at 78.

Drop Its Annual Conference
