Tips for Querying & Pitching Your Work

Writer's Digest

Quote

The 2018 Writer’s Digest Annual Conference was a roaring success. Literary agents, veteran and debut authors, editors, publishers and more shared their greatest writing tips on improving your craft, getting published, and building your writing career.

In case you didn’t make it, or you didn’t manage to catch a session you were dying to attend, we’ve selected 7 tips from the speakers who graced us with their knowledge and experiences.

“I want to know if there’s something awesome about you that’s relevant about you.” Are you a scifi author who worked for NASA? Include that in your pitch. – Chantelle Aimée

“When pitching, don’t say there’s nothing out there like it. Embrace your comp titles. Know where you go on the shelf.” – Paula Munier

“A pass can be demoralizing, but that just means that wasn’t the right agent for you. Just keep kissing more frogs.” – Jeanne V. Bowerman

“If you can’t figure out what your character needs, it’s not a problem with the query, it’s a problem with the plot. … Getting plot on the page is the single biggest problem I see in query letters. What does your protagonist want, and what’s keeping her from getting what she wants?” – Janet Reid

“Don’t pitch or follow up with agents on social media unless they’re specifically looking for Twitter pitches (like #dvpit, etc).” – Tiffany D. Jackson

“If you disagree with your agent’s feedback, explain why you disagree and ask them to explain their rationale. Sometimes it will come down to sales or experience that you may not have.” – Jeff Somers

“Start your query with your protagonist’s name and what they want. Do that and you’ll be a cut above the rest.” – Janet Reid

About the Agents:

Moe Ferrara
Moe Ferrara: Becoming a literary agent was fitting for the girl who, as a small child, begged her dad to buy her a book simply because “it has a hard cover.” Growing up, she had a hard time finding YA books outside of Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine, and instead tackled Tom Clancy or her mom’s romance novels. Though her career path zigzagged a bit—she attended college as a music major, earned a JD from Pace Law School, then worked various jobs throughout the publishing industry—Moe was thrilled to join the BookEnds team in May of 2015 as a literary agent and the subsidiary rights director.

Sharon Pelletier
Sharon Pelletier joined Dystel, Goderich & Bourret in 2013 after working for Europa Editions and Barnes & Noble. At DG&B, in addition to growing her own client list, Sharon oversees digital projects and social media. While her interests include upmarket fiction and narrative nonfiction, in the suspense realm Sharon is seeking fresh literary thrillers and unexpected procedurals. She particularly encourages submissions from marginalized writers of suspense fiction.

Laura Zats
Laura Zats graduated from Grinnell College with degrees in English and anthropology. She began working in the publishing industry in 2011, joining Red Sofa Literary in 2013. As an agent, she specializes in children’s fiction, science fiction and fantasy, and romance. She is also one-half of the weekly publishing podcast, Print Run. In her free time, Laura serves on the board of the Minnesota Book Publishers’ Roundtable, teaches classes on writing and publishing, and drinks a lot of tea. Connect with her on Twitter @LZats.

*All conference attendees are invited to submit a query letter for their novel for a written critique as part of each registration. Please note that any one of the instructing agents may ask for additional materials if the initial submission shows serious promise.
