Happy Saturday,
Let’s begin with some inspiration:
“The bottom line is this: You write in order to change the world, knowing
perfectly well that you probably can’t, but also knowing that literature
is indispensable to the world. The world changes according to the way
people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way people
look at reality, then you can change it… If there is no moral question,
there is no reason to write. I’m an old-fashioned writer and, despite the
odds, I want to change the world.”—James Baldwin
Mr. Baldwin’s writing truly did change the world. He was an American
novelist and social critic during the most turbulent times of the civil
rights era. His complex essays explored and challenged racial, sexual,
and class distinctions in American society. I urge you to listen to this
Paris Review interview (Episode 3: "I Was There"), as recreated by actor LaVar
Burton, to experience the power of his words.
My message today, on the eve of our holiday season, echoes Baldwin’s
sentiment. Your books, stories, and writings might not move a nation’s
consciousness, but you have the power to inspire. It might be only within
your circle of friends and family. Or just yourself. But, as Baldwin
says, just that one millimeter of change matters.
Your words, phrases, and sentences can make a difference. It might take
time for you to realize the impact your books make in others’ lives, which
brings to mind one of my favorite BookBaby Blog articles from the past
about the overnight
"success" of the bamboo farmer.
Meanwhile: If you’re interested in changing the lives of others this
holiday season, Lithub has
some opportunities
for book lovers.

Happy Saturday,
I got an eyebrow-raising offer last week. One of the attendees of last
month’s Independent Authors Conference proposed a book deal for me. With
a traditional publishing house.
As an author, I was flattered by the proposal. But I was a bit perplexed
too. The president of the nation’s leading self-publishing services
company to turn around and publish his book with a traditional publishing
house? That would be like Apple CEO Tim Cook using an Android smartphone.
Does not compute.
So, thanks but no thanks for the unusual book deal! However, the timing
of the offer coincided perfectly with my latest BookBaby blog post: Six Myths (and
a Few Facts) About Traditional Publishing. In it, I list all the reasons
why I’m not interested in the traditional publishing route (beyond having
to explain it to my co-workers).
Staying in the vein of unusual: The folks at WritersUnplugged.com
have compiled a list of the 17 most
unusual libraries
around the globe.
