The first meeting of the Cleckheaton Writers Group of 2016 took place last night where Kathy and myself were in attendance, Martijn, Neil, Mandy and Pippa having passed on their apologies.
The minutes of the last meeting were agreed and updates on WIP given. Both Kathy and myself had brought along work for feedback, so we work-shopped the two pieces together. The first was the second of Kathy's 12 Days of Chris Moss tales entitled 2 Turtle Doves which was very good. There was a lot of humour and it was evocative of the time in which it was set. I made a couple of suggestions, including that I thought it would make an excellent serial story (i.e. as part of a serialisation in a magazine) especially in the run up to Christmas, and we discussed the remainder of the tales.
I had brought along one of the latest chapters of my WIP The half-lands of Aquinas, a fantasy novel for YAs, which dealt with the third main character and her meeting Ambriel the Earth Roamer. Kathy enjoyed the piece (she likes fantasy and supernatural fantasy in particular) and this led on to a discussion about my plans for the novel going forward.
We then discussed competitions etc. (including ones for poetry and short stories at Cinnamon) that we had come across and discussed the WIPs we each had and our plans for them.
The next CWG will take place on Monday 25 January 6-8pm at Cleckheaton Library.
