Brand
New Year @ Seven
We've been hard
at it this week freshening up Seven's café/bar and kitchen. Likewise in
addition to Seven's many regular, popular events, we've some brand
new additions to the programme over the coming month. Look
no further than Elvis McGonagall, regularly
on Radio 4 and 2006 World Slam, at Seven on Friday 16 January and on
Saturday 24 January,
Peter and The Wolf, a
brand-new, spellbinding live performance of Prokofiev's well-loved family
classic. Jazz-wise, on Thursday
15 January, the brilliant John Taylor plays 'Paul'.
In the spring as part of Northern Accent we've two exciting new
literature based events. On Saturday
28 March in a Readers Day with Sophie Hannah, introduced by
James Nash, enjoy a day of conversation between readers and writers
sharing a love of books and on Friday
24 April, John Godber comes to Seven.
Back to now, on Saturday 10 January, 8pm, look forward to Capacity, a
five-piece band of young musicians based in Leeds, playing songs from
Etta James to Aloe Blacc, Aretha Franklin to Norah Jones, Dave Brubeck to
Marvin Gaye and much more. £5
/ £4 conc.
On Sunday 11 January, 1.30-4pm , the afternoon jazz concert is Tarantismo.
This band plays classic songs by Buena Vista Social Club, Cachao and La
Excelencia and with a traditional Cuban son line-up with congas adding a
salsa twist, successfully combines the authentic with the unique. £7/£5 conc, kids free.
In the evening at 8pm brush off the cobwebs from the little grey cells
and come along to the Sunday Quiz,
a great way to end the weekend with friends and family. Free with raffle and prizes.
The Screen Seven movie on Monday 12 January, 8pm, is American Hustle.
This film tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld, who
along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney
Prosser is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso. DiMaso
pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that's as dangerous
as it is enchanting. £6
/ £4.50 conc.
On Tuesday 13 January, 8pm, at Cafe Scientifique,
Dr George Holmes looks at Re-wilding and other novel conservation
techniques. Land is allowed to return to its natural state and locally
extinct species are re-introduced. Will we see forests cover the
Yorkshire Dales, with beavers damming the rivers, and lynxes and wolves
hunting deer? Hat
donations.
Seven Unplugged returns
on Wednesday 14 January, 8pm. Folk, blues, country classical and
more from up-coming talent and experienced local musicians.
This month with The Budget Brothers, Laurence Marshall, Joe Ramsey,
Skinner & Twitch and Feels Like Rain. £5. Doors 7.45pm.
On Thursday 15 January, 8pm, Seven Jazz presents John
Taylor plays ‘Paul’. One of the truly great jazz piano
players of post 60s British Jazz, has rearranged some of the tunes of
Paul McCartney to create a fresh and brilliant programme accompanied by
vocal virtuoso, Diana Torto and Julian Siegel’s beautifully sensitive
saxophone playing. 8pm,
£20 /£18 conc.
On Friday 16 January, 8pm, it's Elvis McGonagall,
where stand up poetry meets comedy. Armchair revolutionary and
recumbent rocker, Elvis McGonagall is the sole resident of The Graceland
Caravan Park somewhere in the middle of nowhere where he scribbles verse
whilst drinking malt whisky and listening to Johnny Cash. With support
from up and coming punk poet, Matt Abbott. £8 adv /£10 door.
Round off the week on Saturday 17 January, 8pm, with some Gallic warmth
in the guise of Encore.
With vocals, accordion and piano, Encore conjures up all the atmosphere
of the French café-cabaret with wonderful songs from the familiar La Vie
en Rose, to the passion of Amsterdam; all sung in French and interwoven
with explanations and stories. £9
/£7 conc
